  1. Is it legal to keep butterfly carp? If not what kind of a licence would i need? If they are illegal then why are carp in the botanical gardens ponds? I think they are really cool but all the research iv done has all been on web sites that are from the UK or US. If they are legal, is there anyone who breeds them? I found a web site that sell them and they are all around $400 unfortunately that means shipping them in to the country but i still really want to breed them!
  2. the brown strings are not part of the algae, they are roots of the Duck weed type plant we have The pond is about 3x2m but as you can see its not square so i cant really tell, the lowest part is about 1.5-2m deep. It is not filtered but we do fill it up with the hose a couple of times a week so it does get fresh water, its still. It does get full sun for most of the day, up until about 4pm
  3. Ok lets see if this works Here are my pictures:
  4. There seems to be an error with me trying to post my pictures Nah its sorted now, i think just trying to put them all on one overloaded it or something
  5. Sorry i have no idea what they are but i have had the top one in my fish pond and it did fine
  6. :-? Every year this gross algae takes over my pond! It never hurts the fish or the plants but it looks horrible and i want it gone! I will put some photos on of it tomorrow but just before i do does anyone know of a good multi-algae killing something that is safe for the fishies and plants and will permanently remove it? We have used several (cant remember the names) and it just returns year after year. If you dont know what i should use do you know what could be causing it? Any info would be very helpfull.
  7. Oh sorry for not clarifying, yes i ment the ones actually in the water
  8. Oh yes it definately does! Yeah papanui pets has such nice birds, id definately recommend them! Awwww i wish Petrie would poo on command! We tried but it never worked, nearly but not quite.
  9. could the first photo (the little grass thing) be a close relation of the Lilaeopsis brasiliensis?
  10. Ok updating! Petrie is now great! He has learnt hello, the smoke alarm, the microwave beep, the washing machine beep, the gurgle of water going down the sink, wolf whistle, dog call, almost says hop up, almost learnt meow. He comes almost everywhere we go and does really well at dealing with annoying children (we know some grabbers). He loves new attention and people saying hes cute, he even says hello to them sometimes, like to the little bike riding children at the park lol. We now have a tree around his cage so we can just open it up and he amuses himself. He has met all the other lorikeets in our area at the pet shops, they get on well. We can now proudly call ourselves 'bird people'
  11. I agree with Alan http://aquaplant.tamu.edu/database/subm ... ndweed.htm If you click "other photos" it looks just like yours.
  12. Ok cool, all sounds kind of positive. Guess ill just have to wait and see (fingers crossed)
  13. oh ok well thats good news. I might try it when i find a way that my cats wont eat them lolz
  14. thats awesome! i hope mine do like each other. what do you mean "recipe for disaster" what could happen just side by side? apart from the obvious hating each other and moving to oposing sides oh and posible disease (not likely because we keep their cages rather clean)
  15. Yes he is tame but not hand reared. Yes the lorikeet is handreared and very friendly but im just worried that because he is bossy and was here first that he will hurt lil Birdy. Birdy does get a lil grumpy though and can bite if he doesnt get his way. Unfortunately Birdy already has a mirror and loves it, couldn't bare to take it away from him.
  16. I have just aquired a sick cockatiel and was wondering how do lorikeets and cockatiels get along? Should i (when the cockatiel is not infectious) get side by side cages? Are they known to be agressive towards one-another? Or does anyone just have general advise in keeping a cockatiel that i might be unaware of?
  17. they had the gold stripe, were bright green, smooth as and looked just like this one (just massive!)
  18. iv heard they smell and we have grown our own bugs before. Its just not for us. Ok ill try the trade me thing thanks
  19. We like to mix up our froggies diet but we are sick of trying to catch lots of crickets (takes a while) Does anyone know where i could buy some (petshops etc..) or does anyone on here in chch want to sell me some?
  20. That seems strange as we have always caught our golden bells in spencer park (they are minimised now though, cause of damn kids) We used to go down and could have caught up to 20 adults per day and once got 300 tads in one go just by a couple of sweaps of a net. If anyone wants them they do still have alot of tads there in season
  21. Wow ours have never been this little at this age only at a couple of weeks old. Ok better make up the other tank then lolz. Thanks for the replies
  22. keeping in mind how small he is and that he is over 6 months old do you all still agree? is there such thing as a stunted golden bell?
  23. I was in Animates and saw a small very green frog, we were told it was a green tree frog but the woman who was selling it seemed confused (we just guessed that it could be a green/golden bell). We have enough tanks and enough experience to keep both whistlers and bells (we have whistlers atm) so we put the little green gut in with our lil brown ones and thought we would just take him out when he got to big if he was infact a bell. He isnt growing as facst as we would expect for a bell and we are still unsure. can anyone identify him? He doesnt look like a bell to me but i didnt know we could get and sell green tree frogs legally in nz
