  1. I set up this tank years ago (don't have frogs at the moment ) I also didn't want to use a glass separation for my pond so i used clear plastic and used silicone to secure it in place. I pretty much pretended i was making an outdoor pond so left enough plastic to be folded back and secured by rocks. I used spag as the base then dirt on top for my plants to spread. Although I really liked this tank, next time I will be laying a more natural substrate so the water will flow under the dirt and I don't need that ugly silicone line. setting up new tanks is such fun, i hope you can find some great ideas
  2. Ok so my bird started to feel a bit left out, so i have given the bird to a lady i have delt with before. she has another lorikeet and two other cockatiels. Im not sure if she will want to keep him after she has has him for a while but i hope she does. I am now free of the flying monster! :bounce: nah he wasnt that bad when he didnt fly around the room screaching! Still no one has called me or text me about him so i dont think anyone is looking for him =( poor guy but he has a good home now.
  3. The stupid bird is trying to bath in my fish tank
  4. Yeah its really friendly and it flies over to sit on our shoulders. Petrie hates him though! Hes like a jealous toddler! Unfortunately this new bird has made himself quite at home and is flying caually around the room just looking and cleaning his beak on the curtains. The person on trademe has been franticly calling her friend to find out if she found her lori yet but hasnt been able to get in contact with her so im not sure if that will work out but im still hoping. Oh just while we are on the topic of lorikeets does anyone know why they have different colour skin around their eyes and beak? its either white or black depending on the bird. Petries is white but the new bird (currently nodding into a plastic bag) has black.
  5. Iv just had someone on trademe's community message board that their friend has lost a lorikeet in wainoni, thats like 5mins away! I hope its for real
  6. I am really keen to find his owner as i was so upset when mine went missing, it was only for 36 hour but i would have gone insane if it were longer! Oh pethub! iv been trying to think of what that one was called!
  7. yeah im going to put up a found on trademe and pets on the net, thats a good idea about not saying what type of bird he is! I dont have a large enough cage for him to live in but if you can buy one and it comes to the 12th and i still havent got his owner then you can come pick him up =)
  8. Anyone in Chch lost a rainbow? My neighbour came over today knowing i had a lori and wondering if id lost him cause they have found one, no i hadn't lost mine but we went over to see him and ended up taking him off their hands (they were happy to be rid of him). Once i get the camera tomorrow i will post some pictures. I have called vets, SPCA, council and am in the process of making fliers and distributing them etc. I just thought that maybe the owner is a fish person too =) Have any other ideas of what i can do? Or anyone know someone who i could give him/her to in the Christchurch area if i dont find the owner in time (im moving on the 14th of may). Any info would help!
  9. Ok they have now had two spawnings and i have no idea what im going to do with all my little babies so i have removed her from the tank and made her up her own lil house but she is still swelling like she is producing more eggs and he is still making nests. If i leave her alone in her tank will she become eggbound or something? Will she die? Or is it possible she will just drop them?
  10. we have fish! they are like little tadpoles. only about one in 3 has lived that didnt get eaten so we have 7 little fish and many more non white eggs. any advice on keeping babies would be greatly appreciated.
  11. Awesome. Ok well that gives me a little bit of hope lol. If i leave them together will they just keep spawning? i wouldnt want them to get worn out. Also some of the eggs are going white and others are not, which ones are ok?
  12. ok removed. some of the eggs have fallen out, in your experience do these fallen eggs hatch? is the nest that vital? oh and he has made another nest already, will they spawn again?

    HELP ME!

i have two paradise fish (male and female) nd there are now eggs in the tank. i was told he would kill her but he hasnt and i was told that the male will care for the eggs but he is eating them! will they survive if i take them away or do they need special daddy care?
  14. Sounds positive =) hope all goes well
  15. Hi all, Im a new paradise fish owner and i was wondering what the best temperature is for them. I have my one at room temperature and all alone. He seems to really want a friend though. Im calling it a he but i really dont know how to tell, i got him from Animates and i am unsure of age. He still has small fins but since iv had him there is a significant redening if his fins and stripes are appearing. He is about 3cms long. How much water per fish? What is the best pH? Are they better with a friend? Are they happier warmer? So basically what im asking is for any advice on keeping my new fishy happy and healthy. Will post a picture of him when i get a good one so someone can sex him. All advice is welcome! Thanks!
  16. i have been doing research about paradise fish (im a new owner) and i have read that 16 is the lowest that they can stand and that is only for short periods, i wouldnt risk it but some people on here seem to think there are wild populations so my research might be wrong
  17. I have saved may hedgehogs from bad situations (meaning everytime someone i know finds one i get it) but they never seem to live. How should they be cared for? Granted, most were either exhausted from swimming all night in a pond or out during the day which im told means that they are already sick.
  18. Awwwww! they are soooo cute!!!!!!!! :bounce: I was going to get one of those! cant now though with the lori lolz. If anyone in Christchurch sees this blog and falls inlove with the idea of a lovebird, Petworld has handreared fischer ones (traffic light colour)
  19. I have an easy way to fix that, go to a store like Bunnings and buy some of that thick plastic tubing to thread all the wires through. It worked wonders when our rats and our lil wild bunny had the run of the house (not at the same time ). For during the day we had an outside run but unfortunately i think he must have been older than yours and he was always still a little WILD bunny. My step mother had their wild bunny potty trained, they tend to go in the corners so she just cut out one side of an icecream container (it was too small to get over the sides ) and put it in the corner of the room. sounds like your doing a great job, good luck
  20. There is alot of dirt at the bottom in the deep parts for the pads and just stones everywhere else. The marginals are in only the dirt that came in their pots but we removed the actual pots. Why do you ask?
  21. We have used something similar i believe, i cant really remember though, over the last 5 years we have used almost every algae killer their is. There are two on the far left. . . Um one is a daisy plant that has over grown and run into the pond and the lighter green one is Ranunculus lingua, dont know the common name. The plant is actually a pain! Its pretty and flowers yellow but we have to cut it back often as it overgrows and covers almost half of the shallow. The fish like it though.
  22. Thanks everyone for your help, any additional information i can gain would be very appreciated
  23. Please someone help with this!
