  1. all legal lol, so yeah, tastes great on the BBQ. did have a few that im sure were just legal in the water, but had to chuck em back once i got out of the water. will hit you up if i do, but extremely busy atm sorting the house and life in general(Almost had to get rid of the tanks....ALMOST lol). Usually try to get the boat out early morn or go for a night fish as to not take up my day.
  2. was my first time diving, not scuba though. Alot of fun, went by sunken rock a 10-15 minute walk from parking, but felt longer with the weights and other equipment. Went for some paua, managed to get a doz or so between us, and got some Blue Moki nice big one, decent butter fish and something else, small(too small) kingfish in the open too. the fish was a bonus, the real reward was seeing how serene it is under the water when theres waves crashing above. i was able to get to about 8-9M depth while my mate could go down to 15. and visibility was about 10M. lots of corals and seaweed to pick from as well to give it a nice natural rock pool feel. Would be awesome to see some decent pics, i only got my IPhone, which isn't the worst but still not that great.
  3. Dont quote me on it, but im 99% sure there isn't. short google shows its algood, just the usual size restrictions on paua, and any other size restricated fish/shellfish. Below is the link to central area, which shows the paekak-puk bay restricted area. http://www.fish.govt.nz/en-nz/Recreatio ... efault.htm might have to be weekend unless you got thursday friday off, unless your gonna wait a bit. weather not looking too great atm, was hoping to get out by kapiti for a fish on wednesday morning. make sure to get some good photos, its an awesome area, went diving there a few weeks ago, and the under water life is amazing, some of those 11 legged sea stars, and nice rock pools to explore, take some crocks lol.
  4. Theres alot out Puk Bay, but make sure to go past Wairaka rock(The big rock you can see on the tip of the peninsula), as its mostly a marine resvere, and the locals will scold you for taking anything from the pools close to the parking area Or if your keen on a drive, Makara is also good. There are lots of star fish, anenomes, Shrimp, various rock pool fish, limpets etc. Last local i had setup i took a bucket and collected the livestock, then grabbed rocks and dead coral/pumice from the water, some of the anenomes were easier to just grab a rock of them as you dont want to damage the foot. and then got sand and water from waikanae beach as it was closer and no restrictions on collection. DONT get the crabs unless you plan on feeding everything else to them, althought the hermit crabs are alright and you might see some of the camo crabs. remember no undersize Paua. when i was there last there was 2 baby dolphins in between the rocks which came for a pat.
  5. just googled Columnaris, and you may be right, which im guessing eventuates to fin rot... He did get finrot, but his health degraded alot faster than when i have had fighters in the past with it. all my females are kept seperate and the containers i float them in with the males are water tight. I removed the sick boy as soon as i saw a change in his health, and did water changes and treated etc. so think my remaining stock is fine. my other male looks very healthy and active(not a mark on his fins, he's a very nice HM specimen) so may have been the tank the dumbo was from. i got him the day he arrived at petshop so wasn't in their tank long, and was probably stored in a different tank to the mustard gas from the supplier. females are from previous purchases so they should be fine.
  6. How have people been finding the imported Dumbo fighters? Got one last week, but he died last night. he had a slight notch on his mouth which by the looks is a deformity on him, but on saturday(2 days after i bought him) he started to lose his fins, then started to go blind in his left eye, then his scales on left side started to fade. quarantined him when he started to lose fins and medicate him. he was in a long tank divided so i can breed, a CT in one division, and a mustard gas i bought at same time in the next division, and a bunch of females in the 4th division. as he was small i kep him alone. The mustard gas is perfectly healthy, and had a nice nest which i will be releasing the female when i get home, and CT is resting from last spawn. all divisions have almond leaves which thought would reduce stress and keep fins in good shape. test kit didn't show any spikes in ammonia or anything, was checking daily from a couple days before i picked him up. was hoping to breed some mustard gas with dumbo, and try get some mustard dumbos, or orange dumbos. Any ideas? would like to get another, but dont want to waste another $80 on a dead fish.
  7. exactly what i was thinking, a bit much for what looks like a overglorified spotted guppy. But dont see them often so could well be worth it if people are willing.
  8. I've seen Scarlet Badis at the pet centre in Porirua a couple times, and the pet shop in kapiti has then often. Have gotten 5 from Kapiti pet shop in with emerald eye rasbora's, a couple dwarf puffers, and a few Oto's.
  9. interesting way to put it but some would say yes The next step in human evolution, ie transcendence, or as my physics teacher explained to me, evolving into pure energy. Ironman, being super intelligent, is kept alive with a power core, can fly etc all are theoretically traits involved with evolving to the next step
  10. So i dont have to wear this vest to fit in with the crowd... lol personally i like to hear peoples views on their own and others religion, can get rather insightful. plus it opens a channel for debate and i must say, im a pretty good debater
  11. i have a feeling your a silvia fan, RPS13 with aftermarket lights or S15 in your avatar?
  12. Well from what ive read from the last page its all quite well thought out, i have had many debates re religion. Christian mothers side(she later converted), Mulsim fathers side(good muslim not bad one lol), brought up semi-muslim(i love bacon lol, but mums coming home so gotta lay off it). Decided to be on the undecided team(or rather have my own beliefs, a 1 man religion lol). have read Quran, bible and torah, and done a bit of study on various other religious views etc. have also learnt arabic, hebrew, latin, and other languages to get a better understanding of the texts, as far as i can tell most of the differences are due to lost in translation from hebrew for the abrahamic religions. main thing i hate is how people misinterprit the views and hows it may be misconstrued and how people act upon those thoughts. but im always willing to listen to other people as long as im not hung over a bridge for my own views, bloody mormons lol, grandad chased em off his property with a pitch fork once cos they tried to shove it down his thoat to much. I figure if i can have as much knowledge as i can, and not just religion, and in as original language as i am able to learn, and i only state the facts, i can therefore not be wrong. Which in turn would make me right.
  13. wow this thread changed alot from when i first read page 1 lol. cant be bothered going though to see how throwing fish in a bin turned into religious views. lol

    discus with fry

Oooo, are we gonna have some cheap(for here) discus on the coast... goodluck, hope they survive.
  15. looks more like a birchir, same family though. one in the pic has the dinosaur fins on it, rope fish dont. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bichir
  16. Aussie born, but mum is pakeha, only recently met my mums biological family as she was adopted. dads Malaysian, been in nz on and off for first 16 years then move over here 11 odd years ago. Family has lived in waikanae since the mid 50's. so I count myself a kiwi lol.
  17. oh also, you may notice the mound of riccia thats on the bottom under the 'tree', it's held down by the glosso thats growing in it, the glosso has grown through the tangle, and the roots hold the riccia down. not too sure if it appeals to me as oppose to a clean look mound of riccia, but it works lol.
  18. Thanks for all the positive comments :happy1: Kinda, but not really. Riccia doesnt have roots, so wont stick to the rocks or driftwood like moss does. Its more the thread that keeps it in place, and once it starts to grow the shape will hold it in place, but i leave the thread because its concealed by new growth. but as stated before, it loves to float so if it hasn't grown nice and dense it will just float to the top. With it on the branches like in my tank, its higher up and gets more light so i dont have a problem with that. so im not too such how the stuff at the bottom will doas the tanks 66cm deep. As for selling the stuff, i will look into how i can sort out shipping, as i've never shipped fish or plants before and work weekdays, and spare time is taken up by gardening, fish, and working on the house so not alot of time to get out and do it. but i have ALOT of everything that will be binned if i dont offer it up lol, so anyone wanting to pickup feel free to PM me and ill share the love
  19. Yeah pretty much, just wrapped it around the branches and tied down with a bit of thread. And it grows from there. Giving it a lil trim to keep its shape every now and then. Do the same with rocks or tiles to weigh the riccia down as it loves to float.
  20. lights, ferts, trimming and patience lol. tbh i am more into plants than fish, although that is slowly changing lol. Riccia naturally grows in a tight rounded formation, so just attach it to driftwood, rocks, tiles, or just leave it freefloating and it will grow, then trim it although it doesnt need to much work. only annoying bit is the small parts that float to the top. Dwarf hairgrass i got in a 5-10cm deep plastic tub and grows as a massive mat, i can just cut squares, or any shape i want and lay it down in the tank. Same deal with the Glosso, the shallowness and high light output of the LED's makes it grow as dense as it is. i just took a 20x30cm square of each and laid it out. i must be doing something right, have had the marble queen sword for about a month and have taken 11 new cuttings off it, which have put a few in the dwarf puffer tank, and the rest need to be sold or given away. The Windelov is looking a bit worse for wear as i completely forgot i had it in a bucket with other driftwood that was waterlogging, and that was outside, so alot of new growth just starting the last week or so. will need quite a bit of Xmas moss to cover the back wall, so will probably grow out a bit under my LED's then chuck it in attached to some plastic mesh on a suction cup
  21. Glosso was growing in a smaller tank, along with riccia, tank size for plant growth tank 1200*30*30 and had my DIY blue/red and white LEDS. 1r/3b/10w ratio. so the high output of the LEDs and the shallow water level gave enough brightness. Should be some details about the lights somewhere on the forums. Has been growing in the smaller tank for about 4 months, was originally going to be a Betta breeding tank, but put that idea on hold while the plants grew out. Had a DIY CO2 setup on it, which will be upgraded on the big tank, and dosed with Flourish. The riccia, and Glosso has been in this tank since last weekend, and still seems to be nice and dense, so looking good so far, so should have a decent idea of lighting needs next weekend. The riccia on the branches should be fine as they're quite high up in the tank. not too sure if i will run T5's and LED's or just the T5's plus another couple, will see how the growth is, but need to sort the lights out once the hood is fixed up. The T5's will do for now
  22. Hey Guys and Gals, So i finished playing around with the tank over the weekend and after much growing and trimming the layout is starting to take shape, still quite a bit of riccia floating around which the filter should take care of eventually. More Photo's can be found Here http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=60482 and here http://s1255.photobucket.com/albums/hh624/ilazahg/ Still a bit more to go, Plan on making a Xmas moss wall at the back, with patches of Riccia amongst it, which will make it look alot less bare, and should hide the overflow box. Will probably get a tiger lotus, or something with a nicer colour to off set the green. Also need to cut a few holes in the hood to allow for the filter pipes, and then will be installing lights into the hood, and add in a proper CO2 setup. inhabitants are mainly Gourami's, Loaches, and Pleco's. Thinking of adding some dwarf Cichlids Rams and/or Apisto's, a group of 10-20 maybe more of a schooling fish and some more loaches, hopefully be doing that this weekend. any other ideas for other inhabitants? its just looking empty atm lol. Will probably chuck this guy in, who is currently living with a group of Pink and White Guppy's in a 25L Fluval Chi. Next will be getting rid of excess Riccia and Glosso from my 200L plant growing Tank, and turning it into a African Tank for the Dining room, and a 120L might be turned into another Planted Tank. I also have a spare garage, which once its insulated, and have some benchs made up will be a new fish room :happy2:
  23. Pro - they provide entertainment when being hunted by dwarf puffers and loaches, and cheap food when ive run out of bloodworms.

    Pink Danio's....?

Yeah i did a quick google for em, and saw that they are GM'd with Jelly fish protein or something like that to show the illumination under black lights, rather than dying them. either way shouldn't really be here. I do see that some US states/Canada have similar law for GM free, and people get around it by breeding the GM with legit versions, and the result is technically no longer GM. But most of the GM fish are/should be sterile.
