  1. I wouldn't count on it, how big is the jardini??
  2. PBT have a section specializing in delicate things, cant remember what they're called. You'll pay thru the nose for it, so if you can borrow a van and feel like a road trip one weekend it might work out cheaper.
  3. Around 6-7 months I think, not sure of weight.
  4. Finally got around to unpacking the computer room and finding the cord to connect the camera to the computer! Here's some pics of chester taken about a week after his last shed. The orange colour is getting stronger every time he sheds. having a snooze on his favorite piece of wood...

    wolf cichlids

Another great fish I'd love to keep but will never get here. Keeping a jag doesn't come close to a dovii [no offense, jags are cool fish]. There's some crazy videos on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tK9w1o2MFz4 Still, I'd pick a male umbie over a a male dovii if I had to choose...

  7. Given that you can buy a 6'x2'x2' glass tank can be bought pretty cheeply I don't think I'd bother. If you're going to build your own take make it a really big one!!

    HELP!!!

Just make sure the heater isn't sitting on the plastic......
  9. I wouldn't risk it, they're not that hard to catch are they? I've moved a 3'x18" tank made from 6mm glass with the gravel and plants, but it was already sitting on a piece of mdf that we picked up to support the base of the tank. You can try it, and if you're sensible it should be fine, but make plants for what you're going to do if the tank does crack....
  10. If you've already got one established tank then there shouldn't be any need to cycle a new tank. You could always 'loan' the pushy male to me, my fish will teach him a thing or two...
  11. Frenchy how many different varieties do you get over there??
  12. Its not really a good indication of what something is worth, more just how many people happen to find it on TradeMe and feel like going nuts. We dabble in TM at work, one week we put a plant up for $1res (usual retail would have been $15-20) and it went for $75, the following week we put up a slightly bigger and better one and it went for $16. Its pretty random really. I agree about the supply vs demand thing. I think the pet shop prices for frontosa are crazy high, but I guess if there's people willing to pay it then it'll stay there, and if not it'll come down.
  13. Ornate will get too big. Pictus cats can get large too, so two is probably enough. I think the eels are in the same boat as arowanas, datnoids etc; you either have one or 3+, and don't forget they can get big!! Some mid-level fish would finish it off nicely.
  14. http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/imports/ ... ic.all.htm Although just because they're on there doesn't mean we can get them (red terrors ) and just because they're not on there, doesn't mean there isn't a few floating around...
  15. Sorry, I forgot you had used your psycic powers to measure the nitrates in her tap water before making that post. Even with 0ppm in your tap water you'll need a lot of plants, lots of water changes and very few fish to keep it undetectable.
  16. So are you talking about african cichlids or is everyone just making assumptions? Was it really necessary to make two threads for one question?
  17. No its not really. If the water is coming out of the tap with 15ppm you're going to have to do a lot more water changed to make a little difference.
  18. I know its not really what you asked, but why?? If its not getting over 30ppm between water changes its well within acceptable levels. 25% weekly is enough of a water change for the kind of tank you're keeping so I wouldn't bother doing any more. I think the only way to get it down to 0ppm would be to get rid of the fish, because if there's any fish they will produce amonia and nitrite, which the bio filtration will turn into nitrate.
  19. Hassle? Its not like you have to assemble it yourself or anything. You tell the shop/tank maker what you want and they make it. IMO that tank isn't big enough (volume is OK, dimentions suck) for the fish you listed. If you had a 4'x18x18" you could happily keep a senegal, butterfly, and a school of 4-6 Spotted Metynnis (Metynnis macilatus) which grow smaller than the common silver dollars. HFF list both 4'x18x18 and 4'x20x20 here so I imagine they should be able to get you one pretty quickly (if they don't already have them in stock) along with a nice looking stand in any finish you like.
  20. I'd also recomend Greg, he recently made the 4'x2'x2' tank for our beardie, and I'll definately be getting a quote from him in the near future for a bigger tank.
  21. What do you think? Its the same height as the first one but not as wide. Do you want to keep polypterus or angelfish? Go into Hollywood and tell them you want a custom 4'x18"x18" (Or even better 4'x2'wx18"h) tank and stand made up.
  22. I doubt it would be too deep, and you probably could keep a one of the smaller species in that tank. However, if you're spending that sorta money, why not get it custom made to be 700 wide and 460 high instead of the other way round. 300mm deep might in fact be too shallow for a full grown bichir, might encourage their tendency to escape.
  23. Look at the shape of the tank and compare it to the shape of the bichir. Its a good tank for angel fish, not for bichirs. You could keep a senegal, palmas, or delhezi in a 4'x18"x18" for life, they all max out at around 12-14", and usually grow slowly after around 10", could probably keep several of any of those species in a tank that size, just make sure it has good filtration and regular water changed because of all the meaty food. As for the dat, you'll need something bigger, they get to 18"+ eventually, I've had mine 2.5yrs and its gone from 2" to 8", currently in a 4'x20"x20", but I'm shopping for something bigger. much, much bigger.... 8) *edit* Oh, and as for the floor, try get under the house to see what the piles/joists are like. Design the stand to spread the weight evenly and you'll be fine. I had a 550L tank on a wooden floor for 2 years, no problems.
  24. I'm guessing he'd probably focus more on the other geo and pay less attention to the severums. Perhaps just give it a bit of time (and some more hiding spots) and the sevs should be able to stick up for themselves.
  25. There's a few different species of african tiger fish. Smaller ones get to around 3', the largest up to 5': http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forum ... hp?t=84827
