  1. oh i thought id have enough room for them. Im not sure i would just like a pair so maybe I'll scrap that thought. Id like to be able to get more than 2 of a certain type of fish, i miss my dwarf honey gouramis but cant seem to find any anywhere at the moment
  2. oh sweet, i thought they wouldve been similar to normal pleco. thanks!
  3. hey guys, so my 80litre's up and running (done the cycle) I stocked it last week with 2 of my gorgeous baby angels (currently about a 50c piece size) and today put 2 little (2cm) bristlenose plecs and 6 cardinal tetras. I plan on getting another 6 cardinals and maybe 4 kuhli loaches. I realise that when my plecs grow they will have to be rehomed accordingly but until then wondering just what else I can put in there without overloading it. I love blue rams, could I get 4 of those?
  4. so bumblebee gobies can live in freshwater with no problems? because as another member said, they are brackish?
  5. anyone heard of these? If so, what exactly are they and how big do they get, may seem like a stupid question but have never come across one until today and they seem cute lol
  6. how do i get rid of it. Its white stringy hair like stuff that is covering my plants and driftwood, the filter seems to be taking a lot of it out when i swish the net round to try get it out. It looks ugly. I think it came off my driftwood from my other tank. I just set up my new tank an hour ago (the one ive been bugging you all about the substrate lol) any ideas on how to get rid of it? Ill have to clean the filter out soon i think because there seems to be a hell of a lot of it in there to!
  7. hey i emailed hollywood fish farm and they sell theres at $73.00 a bag + $25 courier to southisland. Bit expensive eh! Ive gone with orate mix. lol but they are selling a black silicon substrate at BUBBLE AND SQUEAK in CHCH for $14.95 per 7kg bag that kinda looks similar I guess?
  8. Wish there was a hollywood fish farm in chch!!! But now I know what to get I'll be able to buy it!!! Thanks heaps!
  9. thats cool that its not very fine, so long as its safe to use in the tank. Thanks for the help!
  10. I know I have asked something similar before but Im getting my new tank tomorrow so need to get that sorted Now I know I can use a white type silicon sand in freshwater tropical no problem, Im just wondering where abouts I could purchase some darker (black) sand or very fine black gravel? Does anyone know of a place? Im in Chch. I know you guys said placemakers or similiar sell the silicon sand but where can I get some black stuff from? Also has anyone here used asian sand before?
  11. hi. I have just bought an 80litre tank and am wondering if one or two kuhli loaches would be okay in it? Also wondering if anyone on here as any and what they are like to keep. Im not sure what else Im going to stock the tank with yet. Are they peaceful? would they get along with bumblebee gobies and angel fish? Or will they be okay with yo yo loaches, and is this tank big enough for them as well? I know its probaby too small for clown loaches. Also are they okay with plants? I want a live planted tank. Just a thought as to what else may be in their with them. Cheers guys. I so dont know what fish to stock it with!!! So exciting to choose!!! sorry for all the questions and going a little off topic! NTS. LOVE IT!!
  12. thanks so much for the help you 2 Yeh I was thinking about the 'washed out' thing. And yes, angels in my tank as well as a couple of other things. Thanks for the info. I might give it a go for a while and see what happens. I have heard of silicon sand, I will have a look at mitre 10 tomorrow. Now Im kinda leaning towards black sand tho LOL. Geez! Will let you know how it goes and post pics when its complete!
  13. hey guys, Im wanting to do a sand tank, can I do this with freshwater fish or do they have to be marine. I really like the look of sand on the bottom of tanks. Especially white. And what is the best sort of filter to use? Ive heard sand can be a real pain because its always disturbed when youre cleaning the tank etc, but does the filter affect this as well? Oh and one more thing, where can I buy the sand? Petshops? I went to my local but their substrate was for marine only. I saw someone advertising a tank on trademe that used sand from placemakers???? Any help would be awesome!!! Im in CHCH.
  14. First of all, dont give up, once you get the hang of it angels are very easy to breed. I had 3 goes before I actually had a success! You can only learn from the mistakes you make each time. Okay, Im going to try my best to explain my definition of free swimming, bear with me: Firstly, dont stress too much about getting them food STRAIGHT away. They have that 'yolk sac' thingee on them still which is giving them food. I wait until they are ALL (99%) swimming around and not just swimming out and then straight back to the wall or wherever their parents stuck them. My guess is somewhere around 7-9 days. Some of them wont even know what to do with live brineshrimp yet lol (a few of mine just chased them round before they figured out it was food!) Youll most likely have many deaths before you get the survivors. Just takes time! But if youre serious I recommend getting one of those live brineshrimp hatcheries that you stick into the tank with them. The shrimp hatch constantly and swim straight out into the clean freshwater tank. Its the best thing I bought for my breeding!
  15. Not from inbreeding, I got them from different sources, and I think one may be a bit older than the other. I wasnt intending on breeding the 'kids' anyway lol. But yeh thanks, maybe next time round I'll do better. Doubt it, I find it hard enough killing munted butterflies that my cat got...
  16. so.. hows it going, u manage to get them eating yet? Im curious to know if you will get many blacks. Im after a black *hint, hint* Mine are black and white marbled (some with a bit of gold crown) and koi. I do have one that is mainly black but he is very small so might not survive.. Actually I do have a question for some of the more experienced angel breeders. A few of my angels have come out with no bottom fins. You know, those 2 extra long fins that hang from the bottom of their body. I heard I should have culled these when they were very very little but couldnt bring myself to do it as they are perfectly fine in every other way and im thinking I may just keep them for myself Is this just a defect that happens to some when born into such a large group?
  17. im actually really so badly after a bumblebee goby, i saw one last year that i wanted but was sold before i got to it. if anyone knows of anywhere i can get one please let me know, i havent seen any since! im in CHRISTCHURCH
  18. 1226! thats massive!!! im trying to get my 2 to lay again, i seem to be having some green water problems though. That shouldnt affect the breeding should it? Im doing massive water changes and am going to petstore tomorrow to get some sort of chemical for it. Tried putting a blanket over the tank but it only lasted 24 hours because i felt bad and when i fed them they didnt look too happy so I took it off. Am going to pick up a couple of live plants for them to. Feel bad having them in a barebottom tank with just a slab of rock. Am thinking about trying to breed something else but cant really make my mind up. I love bolivian rams... would love to find something I could make a little extra pocket money with. God knows how much time and money us fish people put into this hobby!!!
  19. man im so coming to the fish club meeting lol MITZY thats quite random, your name is melissa (mine to) dont suppose you drive a mitsubishi like me as well!
  20. oh thats great!!! And yes I do like Angels lol. My tanks arent that fabulous though, only a small one in the lounge with 4 of my 'favourite' babies, the non decorated one in the spare room with my fry grow ups, and a non decorated one in another room with my breeders.. Im getting bored again I want something new. The pharmisist that I work next to actually told me if he could have the huge glass offcuts that my boss is trying to GIVE AWAY then he would make me a tank because thats what he does in his spare time!!! IM SO EXCITED. So I really want to get some 'wierd and wonderful' fish for that!!!
  21. when my 2 angels laid on the filter I just bought a new sponge filter and ran it in the same tank for a few days before turning off the filter the eggs are on. Worked a treat! You can get sponge filters for about $15 at the petshop or cheaper on trademe Or else you can carefully cover the filter opening at the bottom with a pair of pantyhose so they dont get sucked up.
  22. multiple tank sydrome... well i did have 3 running at one stage including quite a massive 200litre in the lounge, but man the power bill was huge!!! I do have 3 at the moment though, the biggest being about 30gallons. Yeh I never used to like angel fish, but as soon as the two i got started to lay I got a bit obsessed. I finally have a succesful batch of fry that are about 2 1/2 months old. 22 in all. They are sooo cute!!! I think Id be keen to check out a meeting? Never heard of those before, how exciting lol. Where abouts in chch are they held?
  23. its so great to know that there are people just as obsessed with fish keeping as me out there!!! :bounce:
