  1. Yah at first I thought so too, because those seen to be the standard size / thickness of premade tanks. I guess the maximum safety factor is only necessary when you try to prevent glass breaking from a huge earth quake right ? lol.
  2. Sorry, forgot to mention that, 10mm for big tank and 6mm for small tank
  3. Hi again folks, I've just been reading through the safety factor article and using the calculator for fish tanks, and after this, I have deemed all my fishtanks unsafe ! I have 2, one is 1220x440x600h braced all sides with center bracing, and a 600x330x490h with bracing on sides only. Using the calculator, it seens my big tank is nowhere near 3.8, and the small one is almost 3.8 but only if braced all sides, which it isnt. Is it in my best interest to not fully fill the fishtank for safety ? and if so would I just use the desired water level height as the panel height when calculating safety factor ?
  4. Attached a picture of the fish. Also my other severum, does it look like its got hole in the head ? there are pin prick sized red dots over its head.
  5. I have a gold severum that was constantly bullied by a bigger one, and it has faint dust like black scars all over its body. I have since separated the 2 fishes, but it doesn't seen to be going away. I thought it might be ammonia poisoning in the water but all other fishes seen to be doing well, and water tests fine. I do remember that half a year ago I used a whitespot cure in the fishtank, but not sure if it maybe the cause. The fish is otherwise healthy moving and eating. I was hoping it'd go away and heal by itself (I've also used some medication for healing) but it's been like this for half a year. Is there anything else I can do or be concerned about ?
  6. Hmm just out of interest is AR620T actually a glass aquarium or acrylic ? I thought it's acrylic cause of the way it shatters but my friend thought it's glass.
  7. Just took off the bottom glass, called glazier to get a quote for normal glass was happywith the quote, but now found out the side panels and front don't align up properly so there will be a big gap unless I take the whole thing apart and try realign them... just gonna put it on $1 auction toward my next fishtank. Was looking to get one not so tall anyway. Thanks for all the advice guys.
  8. I guess a 6mm glass would be the way to go ? just called some suppliers today they could do it not too expensively so might give that a go.
  9. Got someone with a table saw, I've been reading a little info on the net about cutting perspex, but I dont really like my chances lol. Will have to wait till tomorrow anyway and call around.
  10. Nah my didn't break until I try to do something with it. It was leaking from the bottom, and since the frame was glued to the bottom glass I had to take that out to do a leak test, and during all this process it broke. I am keen on giving livingart's method a try but without any power tools that might be abit difficult. I am gonna call around see if anyone cut glass to fit if not I am just gonna get a similar sized fishtank for $75 or something and mod the old filter to fit.
  11. Thanks for the great idea ! Just called placemakers and bunnings none of them sell acrylic / perspex sheets, and I read up more about cutting perspex, doesn't seen to be my cup of tea lol. It will be available for free then in a few weeks if I cant find anyway to fix it easily
  12. Very much cracked all over, think needs replacement glass ? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v467/Buffos/Image00001.jpg
  13. Just wondering if anyone know of someone who could do it, I was told not, because of the bowed front shape of the glass that is required. If too costly to fix or not possible looks like will have to $1 auction it !
  14. Hey cool ! thank you for the help, I am hoping to setup mine asap ! I also noticed that an aqua clear hob filter 50 advertises to have 757 litre/hour flow rate. I wonder if I can get away without a power head if I use one of those filters instead.
  15. Just wondering if anyone has one for a long term without using protein skimmer, and what kind of filter media they put in the filtration compartment ? I am thinking of making a nano reef with one and use filterpads and chemibond as filter media. It will be fish only after it's setup or until I can get a cheap deltec hob skimmer or something similar.
  16. Hi there. I am trying to make a tank divider to seprate my 2 small severums from the big one that's been bullying them, the 2 are now stunted because of this I think. I've looked on the net for some help but some of the materials they mention on the net such as plastic canvas and egg crate are not so easy to come by in NZ. I was thinking of using a rigid fly screen from bunnings and hook them up someway, anyone have an idea how to hook up a sheet of fly screen so it'll stay in water ? or know of a good solution to separate 1 fish tank ?
  17. HI all, got some problem with my 300L fish tank wondering if anyone could give some advice on it. Recently, all of my tiger barbs began to have a big white patch on their scale, at first I thought it was just normal discoloration then recently one of the spot turned into what looks like flesh, it seens the fish scales are rotting away ? My fish tank has also become unsuually discolored ( a green / brown tint to it). I did partial water change 25% for 3 days in a row, and the color is still there and does not seen to have disappeared at all. The gravels are very clean at the moment, and I have just taken the large piece of drift wood in there out thinking it might be something (stuck food?) that's causing all this trouble. Is this a sign of some kind of fungal infection ? I have put in some metafix in today to hopefully help with the fish scales.
  18. Hey guys I will be moving to a new house soon which is on the second floor, but I wasn't sure if my 300L fishtank will be fine on it, the floor iw made of wood with carpet and I can clearly feel it's hollow underneath when I walk on it. (It's a garage undernearth the flooring) How would I know if I need to get a builder to reinforce the floor ? and has anyone had experiences on the cost etc ? Thanks.
  19. I havent been visitng the forum for awhile, I am a new beginning in fish keeping and livingart has been an incredible help to me, on and off the forum. I am really sorry to hear this has happened, and if only he wasn't given this short notice, I am sure we might have had something together. I hope it all works out ok, my thoughts are with the park !

    nitrate problems

I would do gradual water changes and monitor the all parameters on a daily basis and some experimentation, I read cichlids can be quite messy and you suppose to get a filter that can handle 2x what the tank size is for effective filtration, not sure if there's any truth in that though but it makes sense to me. I would also wonder if putting fishes on a diet makes your nitrate go up slower also did you check for dead fishes ? awhile back I had a small tank and a fish has gone missing, I thought it was lost but never found it until a week later when I took off the powerhead / filter, and it was stuck between the powerhead and the glass rotting away. I also had dead fishes caught under drift woods etc
  21. Werent there some bad reviews about parts in those redsea max not working properly ? Ie: the protein skimmer and such.
  22. I want to come ! but I dont have a saltwater tank... yet

    nitrate problems

I didnt think a nitrate level of 5-10 would make that much diff would it ? my planted fish tank is consistently on 10 regardless of whether I do weekly or biweekly water changes. I had a few fish deaths but 99% of stock survived. I hear plants will use up nitrate anyway if given the right light etc, but my tank is well planted and still have low nitrate.
  24. I put in the carbon cartridge into my filter today to take all the meds out, I don't think it's a case of white spot now but interestingly all the white spots that were on the fishes have now disappeared or turned into a white smudges . Hopefully I can identify diseases better next time thanks for help everyone.
  25. They aren't spreading and they haven't moved at all. I did a 50% water change yesterday in fear of the med killing my bristlenose, and calculated the dose to use half strength. I couldn't keep the temperature at 28 unless I turn on the lights, I guess the heater just isn't powerful enough. If none of the spots have fallen off by Monday I am just gonna use carbon to remove it, I guess these maybe white spots that aren't white spots oO
