  1. They also do best in brackish water
  2. I havent kept a culture for a while, when i did i use to feed them a little bit of bread soaked in milk (advice given to me from Organism)......... they would chow it down in a couple of days.
  3. John and Toby are great at Organism.... they give the best advice, and there tanks are always clean and the fish healthy, think they are open until 4.30 during the weekend 5.30 on weekdays....... definitely worth checking out!
  4. Critter Kindom in Christchurch has had some the last three or four times i have been there... cant remember how much they were though..... :-?
  5. nice pics guys, there are some awesome looking set ups on here.... Brianemone, (excuse my ignorance... I have no idea about saltwater reefs etc) is there a reason why you have gone bare bottom on your tank?? cheers J

    Eels

I keep my tire track eel in common fine gravel substrate that all pet stores sell...... my eel is very active and constantly out and about.... apparently more often than not they are quite shy, I brought my eel when he was around 6cm..... he's now about 30-35 cms.... and they can grow to over 2ft. I have read that they can be trained to hand feed, but I have never tried, unlike my black ghost knife (about the same size) I cant get him out of my way when my hands are in the tank.... constrantly swimming around my fingers. Tank mates would have to be reasonable in size..... He now will eat anything around 3-4 cms.... I had 3 half grown tiger barbs disappear over night!

    I Need HELP!

when i was starting out with Discus I used www.simplydiscus.com quite a bit... although I havent been there for ages it did stop me from killing my discus! (which is a good thing!)
  9. Hey Guys, Im getting a little bored (not that I would ever get rid of them) of my Discus tank, I have a tank sitting on its stand waiting to be stocked...... after doing some reading I like the idea of getting some Scats, Mono's and Archers... Does anyone currently have a brackish tank going? ... and if so... is the maintenance on it huge..... it doesnt sound it from what I've read..... but putting theory into practice is often very different! any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Jared
  10. yeah...... man im very jealous....extremely good deal..... just wish i had the room for it myself!!!!!
  11. Hey guys, Im helping my mate move his new (to him) 7ft tank tomorrow, currently there is an oscar severum and a Plec in the tank. After the move he is going to be making it a (very large) community tank. My question is in regards to bacteria in the external filters.... Because the filters havent been cleaned out for approx 4-5 months we are going to do this. There is where i get a little confused...... Because we are cleaning the filters we would normally do this in tank water.... but am i correct in assuming its not going to matter because of the fact as soon as we start the filters on the fresh set up its going to wipe out the bacteria colony with the fresh water? (please let me know if this does not make sense...) thanks heaps
  12. I guess my eel is around the 25-30 cm mark, he isnt as fat as some of the other ones i have seen around christchurch. He wont eat pellet or flake type foods, the only thing i know he loves is frozen blood worms, he would eat 2-3 cubes every night...... and still looks for more... on the odd occassion i would give him some fresh shrimp but he only picks at that.... hope this helps a little Jared
  13. I have had one of these guys in my tank for around a year and a half now....... he is definitely my favourite fish, so active and has heaps of personality......... the only downside he keeps eating my swordtails my friends either love him or hate him (most of them are fully grossed out by him) but they pretty much ignore my discuss and just look at him!
  14. I have a species tank with Both Brazillian and Dwarf (i think!!...they are Little & yellow) Puffers, Initially I started out with 6 Brazillians' and 8 Dwarf's.... after about 4-5 months I now have 5 Brazillian and 2 Dwarf Puffers. I would like to say that they past away of natural causes....but I'm yet to find a dead one, they always seem to be consumed before i realise one is missing. I havent witnessed any aggression towards each other, except for the usual squabbles at feeding time. All of my puffers feed on Flake food, sinking pellets, Frozed bloodworms and on the odd occassion shrimp. Cheers, Jared

    Christchurch

Hey Blueram There are no pet stores in the centre of town, the closest Store would be Critter Kingdom on Stanmore Road, or Animates on Moorhouse Ave. Cheers, Jared

  18. Hey, I have just recieved 6 Brazilian Puffer Fish and 8 Dward Puffers, does anyone have any experience in keeping these fish together???? They have been together for a few days - so far no problems but not sure if they will be okay for long periods of time. Any information would be appreciated. Cheers, Jared
