  1. Come on! It's just a light breeze here! You can even see thin spots in the clouds!

Wow, MAF has BOTH of their reasonable employees working on the Valis study?
  3. 20G would be a minimum for just one of them. I don't think think my two would be particularly happy in that small even alone. They do get big, mine are around 7". That one in the picture looks very nice, mine look nothing like that, colorwise.
  4. Wish I had room for a sump under my tank. Well, could fit a tiny one, but that'd be small enough to be a waste of time.
  5. You're going to need a much bigger tank than a tiny 30 gallon if you want to keep 5 of them. I'd say a 55 gallon would be the minimum for a pair of them.

    Tank shot

Somehow I doubt you'd have been allowed to fill your luggage with blue beach sand.

I want a frag of that red thing.

Plants seem to grow better in my pond than in my tanks. :-? But, I don't think anything from my pond can get into any waterways.

I've found hygro polysperma grows well to the surface of my hex tank, Ummm, about 3 feet and could easily do more. Given enough light of course. And unfortunately the bits near the base tend to start looking pretty pathetic.
  10. oops, sorry, Janey, that was me. Interfecus and I were playing around with our email's return addresses, I forgot to change mine back. Hmmm, I don't think I've ever had tiramisu. Sounds good though. People around here seem to have some kinda strange fear of chocolate or something. Go to pak&save or new world and there'll be 5 different brands of hokey pokey and only a single container of chocolate icecream.
  11. Wifey said she could make some potato salad for the BBQ. Anyone else bringing that? I'll try to talk her into coming too.
  12. What are baby shrimp called? Anyway, it was standing on top of a rock waving the fins under its abdomen and these little less than a mm long threads would go twitching away into the current. Ok, back to disassembling my leaky failed attempt to jury rig a powerhead inline with the pump to my POS skimmer for a bit more pressure.

    Tank Construction

Would weaken it, but if you put the hole near the top for an overflow or maybe reinforce it with an extra layer of glass it shouldn't matter. Assuming its nice clean hole which would be extremely important. Well...The pressure is only depends on the water depth, which is the same for the sides and front. The STRESS on the sides would be less though, because its spanning a shorter distance, say 2 feet instead of 4+feet. So, you could get away with thinner glass. Use Warren's thickness calculator to get the safety factor about the same as the front. But then...Is it worth the trouble using different thickness glass for what's a relatively small section? I think maybe you might as well go with the same thickness for ALL the glass, including any supports. But, cost may be a deciding factor. I don't think the lights could get the glass hot enough to make them weaken enough to matter. Need to be way over boiling. BUT It might be hot enough to weaken the silicone? *Insert standard disclaimer here*

    More hybrids

Seems like metaphorically, poetically or however you want to call it, that letting it go would be pretty bad too. Wouldn't the best choice(Also ethically and environmentally) be to give the fish to someone else?
  15. Getting there and back wasn't a problem, for me anyway. The problem was that half an hour after I got back the power went out. So I had 12 hours of stirring the tanks with spoons to give them a bit of airation. All except my biggest cooled down to around 21°. Only losses at the moment seem to be 3 cardinals (WHY?!? the hell do I always lose ALL the cardinals?) The backyard was flooded to about 3-4" deep, a nice big river going past the house. When Bridget was coming home from work at 7am the highway was closed off because of flooding, Lower Hutt is apparently totally flooded, all the bridges over the river are closed, took her an hour to get to Upper Hutt and she had to drive through flooding that was up to the 200SX's bumper. Cops have totally shut down any traffic headed towards Wellington. The road up the hill home was covered with slips, flooding and waterfalls. The inlaws who live about 5Ks up the road are stuck at home because the road is blocked off both directions. Isn't it supposed to be hot and dry this time of year? Oh, and it was nice seeing you and everyone else too, Andrew...(Except the canadians, hehe Just kidding)
  16. It's not looking at all promising for good weather tomorrow. But, I'm going anyway if anyone else shows up.

    Do they mix ?

They can be, but their ideal conditions are totally different. The malawis might be too aggressive too, but I don't know.
  18. I just use one hose to drain straight out the door and another to refill from the sink.
  19. I get a lot of ooohs and aaahs over my redspot pleco and he's common and pretty cheap. Though, most are along the lines of, "Oh my god he's huge!"
  20. Woah...Wierd. That looks a bit ridiculous actually.
  21. You definitely need to do regular water changes. If that doesn't keep your PH up then baking soday works for a short term fix. For longer term I like to use bird grit in the filter, though, I'm guessing from the stocking of your tank it's a small one so you're probably not using a cannister. That makes things more complicated.
