  1. Well...A sump isn't exactly a type of filter. It's just an additional tank plumbed into the main tank. You CAN put media and things into it to make it a filter. It's also good for getting heaters and other equipment out of the main tank.

    Hi there!

Sleep on top of the tank. Good enough for the cats, good enough for people. Nice and warm on cold nights too.

    marine advice

I figure I've got about $1500 left to go before I can start putting corals and things in my tank. About $900 before I'll put any fish in. That's assuming I can get some cheap second hand MH. Haven't seen any good second hand skimmers, though.
  4. I think it's pretty painless for them. Most of the stress would be just from being in a small container for that time. It's definitely a LOT less painful for me than bashing my poor fishy with a rock or running it over with my car.
  5. It's the giant green terror. Scientific name Cichlasoma Softus Squishyi

    Electonic testers

Hmmm, Only $160ish. That's not bad at all, I paid nearly as mcuh for a crap Dick Smith one. And $210 for a digital salinity monitor...Hmmm...I'll take one of each, please.

    Electonic testers

Take a scoop of water out in a cup. I tried just putting the tester in the water but found the heater turning on and off and anything electrical in the area threw off the reading.

    Electonic testers

Don't leave it in the tank and the oscar won't eat it.

    Some of my Africans

So many nice ones, how to choose? Festivums, severum, Surinamensis are the first to come to mind.

    Some of my Africans

You need some south american cichlids, Caryl. Even better than Africans.

    Rata logs

Hey, that's an even better idea! Silicone a bunch of suction cups to the bottom!
  12. So, we should be asking...Is it dead, dennis?
  13. You know, Kevan, All the previous pictures were just fine. And it's generally better to just edit your post instead of making an entire new one for every little mistake and clogging up the forum.

    Rata logs

Hmmm...How about moving some of the gravel around and siliconing it to the bottom of the tank?

    MOVING HOUSE

Wouldn't that significantly cut down on oxygen transfer into the water?

    Ram- New Strain?

I think they're just a mutation. Haven't seen many of them, I think I saw a couple once and they looked like just a horrible freakish mutation that should be killed. But, the ones in that picture don't look too bad.

    platy fry

Try wrapping some pantyhose or something over the intake. Then at least you won't suck up any fry.
  18. Keep the light on for 12 hours about and then adjust from there. The more light the better. Just light ambient light in a well lit room isn't really going to be enough for most plants.

    MOVING HOUSE

    Geophagus surinamensis, best fish ever!
  20. Mine seemed to always be at the surface from day 1. The only time I've seen them lower is when I pull the blanket off to have a look in the tank, but I think that's because their startle response is to dive. It's only recently that a handful have started going deeper. They're starting to look like fish now. I had a dream about my fry last night...They'd all turned into guppies, pissed me off...hahaha.

    ooo

Obviously my comment was a bit too subtle for some of you. How about if I rephrased it. "RED X"
  22. OH! Two different people, same fish. Didn't realize it was you that posted the oops, nico. Thought you were Janey.

Cool, a red 4 limbed starfish.

    giant gourami

Maybe I should make myself more clear. Colisa fasciata isn't a GIANT gourami. It isn't even particularly big. I don't mean it's not called a "giant gourami" In fact with a bit of research it seems to be very average in size and smaller than many gouramis. You want to argue that a common name is innaccurate how about arguing about that? Oh, and I also turned up a handful of references of Osphronemus goramy as also being Osphronemus gorami to muddle things up a bit.
