  1. We had "white cloud mountain minnows" before too, I am too lazy to actually catch my own fish. They just look so different to the ones we had before.
  2. Oh, that's could be quitv unpleasant. Our last lot (back home) were fine together for a year or more ..... but, as I said, think they might have been different fish... i thought i had done my research and had read up on minnows, just shows - trust nobody! Thanks for the warning, I'll keep an eye out for that.
  3. Just bought some minnows this weekend. We had some back home in the UK and liked them. Oddly a "Minnow" here seems to be a completely different fish. The "minows" here (NZ) are much tubbier, more colourful with a lot more red in their dorsal fins and tails than thv slimmer more drab UK fish. I wonder if this is because they are different fish or whether it's selective breeding of the same fish that's caused the difference. I prefer the Kiwi ones myself - even though they look like cantrbury fans, they need some yellow to go with the red and black in my unbiased Hamilton opinion (a MooLoo Minnow has a certain ring to it don't you think?). either way our minnmows are very pretty and seem to be fine in with our "hard case" indestructible goldfish who lived in a murky slimy bowl for about six months ('till we got ashamed of it and back into "fish keeping").

    Hello

It's easy to tell them apart. Aussies Keep "Tropcl feeesh, mate" and Kiwis keep "Trupucul Fush, 'Ay Bro". Also, be careful when asking a Kiwi for 6 of anything. Kiwis walk around in "sweet as.." gumboots and black singlets unless they are a JAFA in which case they carry a latte and a man-bag .....and Aussies all wear "bonza" bikinis that match their hats with corks on ...... isn't that right? As a Welshman I'm going back to my "tidy" choir in the Valley next to the mine and sheepfarm ....... Boyo. But, as Vic Reeves said, "All generalisations are wrong". (For those of you from outside New Zealand I'll let someone lse explain JAFA, I'm new on this site and don't want to get thrown off yet )

    Hello all.

D'oh! There are probably HUNDReDS of posts explaining how to put photos up .... but ..... anyone know how to do it properly?
  7. A "daddy long lges" is a type of fly in the UK. Those annoying things with .... er.... long legs and those tiny little wings. I think the spiders are better though!

Hello! Welcome, I'm new here too - they all seem quite nice .... nobody has bitten me yet or given me a chineese burn or anything. As a ramdom aside I asked a Chineese Malaysian friend in work what they called Chineese burns - they call them "Indian burns", the Indian guy said there wasn't an Indian word for them and Indian kids have far more innovative ways of injuring each othr anyway.

    Hello all.

My clever wife has figured out how to put pictures on here...here is our tank!
  10. A whole Gourami dissapear ??!! How big is your tank?? Good grief! Re: it being a Hamilton thing Maybe the City slogan should go from hamiltON to "Hamilton - City of psycho fish........ " Perhaps there is too much P in the water or something .....
  11. Ha ha  I have only been here (NZ) 18 months but even I know the red shed is the warehouse.
  12. Ha ha - That's pretty much what we did! We got a goldfish bowl six months ago and now have three tanks (one of which is a microscopic, teeny weeny, treatment tank) and the goldfish bowl is now in a drawer 'cos we are ashamed of it!! Scary how it escalates isn't it? What really makes me laugh is that you feel compelled to buy a 40 buck filter and an air pump and a testing kit and lights .... all for a 5 Buck goldfish !!! Are we mad? Both being in Hamilton I expect we have the same "dealer".
  13. Stroke? My advice would be; - Aspirin once a day - Check it doesn't smoke - Fasting Glucose and Cholesterol blood test - ecg to check heart rhythm is regular - Regular excercise - NZ stroke foundation number is 0800 stroke, not sure they have an aquatic branch though. I hope that helps.

    Hello all.

eh....baby....? Do you know something I don't ? I think I missed the point completely! Must be your accent or something.....
  15. Does that really work ..... or are you having us on? :-?
  16. He wasn't found by the masseuse surrounded by tranquilisers was he? We are having a bit of a danio apocalypse at the moment (OK ... 3 ... not quite an apoccalypse .... ) so I send my sympathies. Ours are being munched though.
  17. Anybody know the Olanzapine dose for fish? We have a psychopath in our tank! We have had a few fatalities this week (2 neons, 2 new leopard danios) who all lost chunks of their tails overnight. Now one of our 2 Dwarf Gouramis is floating around on his side with what looks like a swimbladder problem no control of buoyancy, not a good look, and has been relocated to the infirmary (or should that be infinmary) for some blue stuff which cures "everything". Maybe he got bashed by the other Gourami. Just caught the other Gourami taking chunks out of another Leopard Danio. The poor danios must dread us going to the shop as we seem to massacre all their relatives. Oddly the Dwarf Gourami seems to go for new tankmates only. Maybe he's into live feeding - it seems I am, albeit inadvertantly! Any ideas as to what we can do? I expect the answer is "not a lot unless you waste the psycho". I thougt Gouramis were relatively calm, peaceful fish, we were originally worrying about them getting nipped. I suppose at least it's not some evil plague about to kill everything. Just an evil fish about to chomp everybody. Perhaps I should sit him down and ask him about his father....... "You see Doc ... it all started when I was a fry .... my father was never around, he left after spawning, and Mum tried to eat me...."

    Hello all.

Hi. I'm Andy, I moved to the Tron from Cardiff (Wales ... not Taranaki) 18months ago. We (wife and I) kept fish back home and went to the show in Hamilton Gardens, and very nice it was too..... and decided to get a tropical tank because we missed our fish (or should that be fUsh now I'm in NZ)! We now watch a lot less TV and watch the fish/fUsh instead. I had forgotten how this whole hobby can spiral out of control and you end up with mountains of rubbish you don't need, but really want, when your original purchase was a 20 buck goldfish bowl! I think those things should have a financial warning on them ... like cigarettes for heart disease ..... "Warning injuducious purchase of this fishkeeping product may adversely affect your bank balance!" At the moment (!) we have a 60L tropical tank, a 30L goldfish tank (upgraded from the grotty little bowl .... because we were ashamed of it) and our newly set up hospital tank. Does anybody know when and where the Waikato lot's next meeting is and who we need to get in touch with to join? I picked up a leaflet somewhere with all the details on and promptly lost it ........ Andy Hamilton
