  1. I'm still learning my way roundthis website and can't seem toaccess a new private message. Any help please? Where do I open it up to read it?
  2. how high is the barrel, my pond is a water trough type about 15-20 ins deep. Frogs don't often come, just now and again. Maybe a good food supply food supply would keep them there longer.
  3. Not sure, we live on a 10 acre block and they seem to arrive at our back door sometimes from quite a way overland!
  4. I have an outside pond around 1 metre by half possibly, had a visiting frog fopr a few nights but he soon hopped away. Maybe there wasn't enough plants for it.

    worms

just been reading some old post, (fairly new to this website) and wondering about these buckets. Do the larvae stay on top of the water or what ? I had a bucket by the chook house and seemedmostof the larvae were in the sediment at the bottom, so had tolose the water to get the wrigglers! Couldn't collet any worms that way!
  6. Only problem now is that mine don't seem to be multiplying. Plenty of life, they are shimmering away, but only once has there ben a very thin layer up the sides. Do they have any other requirements, like dark/light or temperature that might affect their growth? Currently they are on the bench but not in direct sunlight. What actually do they eat and what is the purpose of the yeast?
  7. been spending some time in Pauls website, thanks for the link. I thought the lead weights were to keep the plants anchored down! Does it restritct their growth too much if you leave them on?
  8. Thanks for all the help, really appreciate this place. Can see more plants is in order! Roll on shopping trip!
  9. thanks, how long is her pregnancy and at what stage should she go into a separate tank. And how long befrore the baby swordtails can join other fish without being eaten?

  11. Thanks, that makes sense-I was wondering if the yeast needed sugar to work on but hadn't seen it mentioned anywhere. Do I just harvest the worms that climb up the side or scrape them off the surface?
  12. Hi folks, I had a pregnant swordtail, enlarged tummy and black spot and all then I vacuumed thetank. Later on i noticed no swelling and no black spot! Is there a connection and atwhat stage do you separate the female. Is it ok to put her just into a breeding net? Killifan
  13. I've been given a microworm culture but need a bit of advice. How often should I start a new culture off and when making up the creal base, how do I know if there is enough yeast in it? Also at what stage do I start harvesting the worms? Thanks for any help. Wendy
  14. High order plants are more competitive in using these components when they are in balance thus starving the algae. What do you mean by "higher order plants"? Also is there some kind of a ratio for size of pond to amount of plants? I'm thinking specifically of my outdoor pond for which I can find no cold water algae eater.
  15. what is it about natural light that makes algae grow and fluorescent lighting doesn't?
  16. if you have laterite or some other substrate under the gravel, what happens to it when you 'vacuum' the gravel? Should I vacuum every time I do a water change, which currently is 2-2 1/2 weekly depending on time available.
  17. thanks Rob,I'll check out a new tube. Mine only gives the length (24"/58 cm) and doesn't say anything about the number. Also there is only one tube, but my tank is only holding 54 litres. not 100.
  18. yes,its a 20 watt light but defintely npot a 100 litre tank! measurements are 79x29x25 which according to my calvulations works out at 54.3 litres.
  19. Plants are just in a gravel. What is laterite?
  20. I have a 2ft light on a 2'6' tank. Not sure what wattage as its second hand.
  21. I'm new to tropicals and am learning lots here! Mt plants just aren't growing though. Don't know their names, the smallleafed ones are going pale and some are growing a fluffy dark substance on them as are the 2 little grass plants, but the broader leafed one isn't. How do you feed plants in a tank? Should I leave the light on all day when I'm at work, (the tank gets light but not direct sun). Killifan
  22. my sole killi fry was in a small tank alone with a sponge filter being fed on BBS and VERY finely shaved mixture of heart/beef. I changed the water about every 10 days or so as the 'fluff' built up on the bottom of the tank. The ph level is about 7.2 and the temp was 25 degrees. Apart from that I don't know!
  23. I have been raising one sole surviving Nothobranchius guentheri ? for quite some time, when allof a sudden it died. Does anyone have any tips for more success with my next eggs due in September? Also what is the best/easiest way to separate the fry from the peat when they hatch? Have tried an eyedropper, but it is slow and they move so fast!
  24. Hi, I am looking for help in obtaining some live food cultures from a source as close as possible to Whangarei, though I do have a daughter living in Auckland. I'm not sure about raising brine shrimp due to lack of room and equipment, so microworms or something a bit bigger that isn't too complicated wouyld be great. Thanks wmcIntosh
