  1. pretty sure my fish has dropsy-it is puffy and slight signs of fins sticking out, but also has white stuff round its mouth, so gave it everything I had!
  2. Is it ok to treat water with both melafix and White Spot Cure for things like Ich. This treatment turns the water blue, but when i added it to water thyat had melafix in it after asbout three hours the water was no longer blue.
  3. My lovely red fighting fish is lookingvery sad. Sure he is going to die. Suspect dropay but there is also white round his mouth and between the stripes onhis body. Do the fish normally develop an 'S' bend in their spine? This one has had this for sometime and it is quite marked. Normal or a disease?
  4. point taken, didn't realise 'things' could hide in the tank like that waiting to atackk!
  5. except thatr he has been in this tank for 7 months already and no other fish has developed fin rot over that time, so I'm picking its probably not that.
  6. thanks, I will do the isolation thing that way i can treat with melafix easier. Any idea how long before new growth will show?
  7. he's in with neon tetras, emerald eyes, female swordtails, glowlight tetras, WCMM's. No sign of blood anywhere but he is red so could be a bit hard to see. I wondered about fiin rot but as he's been like this ever since I got him I thought he wouldn't survive that long.
  8. I have a Siamewse fighting fish whose finnage is shortening and becoming more and more frayed. I haven't seen other fish nibbling at him, but if i isolate hom how long should it take for regrowth to benoticeable? Is there a non-terminal disease that would do this? I've had him since about June last year.
  9. will the fish mentioned in thre posts above cope with outside pond on spouth wall where water is often around 10 degrees over winter/early summer
  10. Thanks, it has been in the pond for nearly 6 weeks now. According to the info you only need a small amount of straw. A bale does a huge pond. Anybody have any specific amounts? Would it help if I did a big water change? When it starts to work is it still a slow process or is it easy to see happening?
  11. Is there anyone whji has actuallyhadexperience using barley straw to kepp a pond clean? I came across the principle of it, mamaged to locate a bale of the stuff and after 6 weeks absolutely nothing is happening.

    fin rot

some months ago my daughter gave me a Siamese fighter which she had in her tank for a litkte while and said that her fish had nibbled its fins. It has never grown any length to its fin or tail. Could it have fin rot, is that fatal or infectious?
  13. thanks for all that help - I was just about to try the hay! Will curb my imoatience and hunt for the barley straw.
  14. so do you just put the barley straw anywhere in the pond and how often does it have to be changed? What is the set up like with the stuff you buy in the bottle? I mean does the bottle go in open both ends so the water can flow through or just open one end? And where can you get it from?
  15. my PH down is in a small plastic bottle with a pink and blue label and it says it is 21% phosphoric acid, not for use in saltwater .
  16. thats one reason why I was wondering if i could use vinegar to achieve the same end if necessary.
  17. so if you do a test and find out, do you make changes to the water or just use the info to conteract the effects?
  18. After fixing my sick gourami i put him back in the main tank and the Siamese fighter and swordtail hassled him to death literally! I was hoping to have a try at breed ing gouramis but both blues and both lemon coloured ones have died over the last 4 months. Are they sensitive particularly?
  19. how necessary is it to know the hardness or softness of your water? How can you tell what it is? What is KH to do with the water.
  20. my roof water is about 7.3 to start with and goes to about 7.6 over about 3 weeks to a month. The LFS said that was too high and sold me some PH down. I have small coloured gravel in my tank and 2 pieces of terracotta pots. The fish have are 3 swordtails, 2 neons, 1 harlequin 1 Siamese fighting fish, 5 mountain minnows and 2 bristlenose 1 skunk fish. When my fish die there is no visible sign of diease, one day they are fine and a couple of days later are not in sight! The LFS tested my levels last time and there was no nitrate/nitrate/ammonia showing up.
  21. No I don't have ant plants which i know is not good. I started with some ornamental grasses then found their seeds coming up all over the garden and paddocks which wasn't acceptable and then the more surface floating ones became a tangled slimy mess so i disposed of them. Whats the difference between barley straw and hay (apart from the obvious one!) and how do yuou but straw in a bottle?
  22. I've been experimenting and found that one drop of vinegar to one litre of water will bring theph level down from about 7.3 to about 7 immediately. Is it ok to treat my roofwater with this at this rate before I do a water change? The driftwood in my tank puts my ph to about 7.6 between water changes.
  23. I've heard that having a bundle of hay in an outside pond will keep the water clean. Does anybody know anything about this ? I'm having trouble with my pond going green because over summer it gets more sun than in winter.
  24. my apologies for putting it in the wrong arena! I kind of get stuck in the 'beginners block' as that's where I find lots of help! But thanks for the helpful comments.
  25. Will Java moss survive in cold water-outsaide ponds? Will gold fish eat it?
