  1. When / if (!) I succeed with my gouramis, how airtight does the cover on the tank have to be to keep the air space warm enough?
  2. Thanks, Bill. I had a computer 'glitch when putting the post in first time. Didn't realise it had gone in.
  3. O.K. I've had two lots go 'off' in icecream containers- it did have slits in the lid but maybe not big enough. I have a large polystyrene fish bin I will try next. Would it work just to have the soil in part of it rather than fill it right across. Also should I have the lid partly open? How else do you ventilate thru polystyrene? I only have a 2-3' fish tank so don't need millions of whiteworms! In the icecream containers they soon seemed to get overcrowded
  4. When I bought my dwarf g. they were very thin looking but since I've been feeding them worms, frozen blood worms and home made mix they are plumping up in the area just behind the pectoral fin, then between that rounded srea and the tail they are still quite thin. When she is full of eggs, will the female be fat all over or just in one area?
  5. Are icecream containers suitable for keeping white worms in and what conditions make them go all slimy?
  6. I've just been to your website, Pegasus and would like to know how to recognise Daphnia and infusoria? You mention infusoria making the water cloudy, do I just tip the cloudy water into the fishtank or what? Also how doI know when fry are ready to move on to microworms? I have a gold fish pond outside needing attention. Currently the water is orange. Am I likekly to find anything of value in that for live food?
  7. I've been to your website Pegasus and been reading about live food, but am a bit puzzled. With infusoria particularly and daphnia, what doI look for. you mention infusoria making the water cloudy, do I just tip this cloudy water into the tank for the babies or what? Also how do you know when fry are able to move onto microworms?
  8. Is a box filter the same as a sponge filter? Also the tank is small 16"x 12" approx.
  9. Thanks, i assume then that they aren't supposed to be washed clean!
  10. I just have a sponge filter in the corner of the 'maternity' tank and it is turned down very low to limit surface water disturbance. If I leave a small gap at the sides of the divider, will that give enough water flow to filter the arend of the tank?
  11. what is Siporax and "bio media" please?
  12. can I separate with a piece of solid clear plastic/glass and if so how does the filtration work?
  13. one more question - with the low input of air thru the filter, the water seems to be turning green. Is that a problem? It is a small tank, (8" deep is about 10 litres) if I feed copiously how frequently will I need to do water changes?
  14. my last batch had population explosion when I wasn't looking and I lost it. Is there anyone out there who could send me a few to start another culture with.
  15. I have a pair of these and would love to breed them. Have done the folloeing actions, water level 6-8 ins, temp 82 F, separated female for a week, fed extrta in that time, plenty of Java fernm in breeding tank, no surface disturbance of water, but in spite of being back together for a aeek there is no sign of activity. Should they be making bubble nest straight away or might it take longer, or could it just be a case of not attracted?
  16. i've been reading some back posts which seem to suggest that the carbon isn't really necessary unless ypu need top removwe medication. is this correct? the LFS says to change it about every 3 months or it will cause fish to die. If it's not much use, can I run my filter without it, or is their something else like a block of sponge I could put in the cavity?
  17. Excuse my ignorance but are carbon filters the same as the charcoal filter in a hang on back filter? Killifan
  18. The grass clippings have made the water really black, how do you get the blood worms out without losing all the water and the crawlies now in it?
  19. these things swim with a similar motion to a caterpillar on the ground, not transparent but are milky white with a black/brown stripe along their back. Have loads of mosquito larvae so better start scooping!
  20. I've set up my bucket with water/grass clippings and now look to have plenty of mosquito wrigglers, but there is also something else. Started off as a little clump of things then that broke up and they look a bit like tadploes with one end thicker and the other a little whip like tail. Can anyone tell me if they are goodies to feed my fish or what they might be?
  21. thanks, makes sense. Will try it now!
  22. have been following advice given and removed he lead weights. Can you tell me now how I keep the plants anchored aso they don't all come tothetop with the slightest disturbance?
  23. thanks Alan, for your help, you mustbe an 'early bird' too!

    slimy culture

what makes the top of my whiteworm cilture go slimy? I'm guessing something went off, but I was able to save a reasonable amount from the soil further down.
