  1. how can you tell what is a 'good strain?'
  2. He's quite pretty! Has an orange 'flush' over his back from dorsal fin to tail, similar shading on his belly from anal finn backwards. Has a red stripe horizontally through his middle line and shiny blue 'flashes' in the in between area.
  3. where do you sell them through then? Sounds very interesting.
  4. sounds like a good idea! Anybody want a stroppy little swordy!
  5. Thanks, i thought guppieswere everywhere and were very common so wouldn't fetch much? I started tropicals with killies, but due to gross ignorance on all things tropical, I lost the lot. I had the idea theywere pretty tricky, but the LFS was keen to get any if I had been successful.
  6. thanks, I might try a little female for him then! Is there any reason why a juvenile male swordy would 'pick' on this gourami? He doesn't bother the Honey one at all. but didn't like either of the blue ones.
  7. ok, can you let out the secret?
  8. is there any fish which is good to make money from?
  9. i have a small (about 2.5cm) male lemon coloured (Honey?) gourami. How can you tell when they are old enough to breed and does it matter if Honey breeds with Blue?
  10. I went into the LFS to see about a female and the lady was adamant that the females were as blue as the males and that it was the DORSAL fin that had the different shape. There defintely was a difference to be seen in the shapes and the two which would have been females also had quite swollen bellies.
  11. lots of info on this with a google search! My biggest problem was getting a breeding pair!
  12. one of my blue dwarf gouramis developed the fluffy fungis disease on its head. Treatment with Tonic has fixed the fungus, but his forehead (?) has lost his blue scales and he has a dark strip across his head from gill to gill. Is this a by product of the fungus? Wil he regrow blue scales?
  13. would it be possible to post a small starter culture to Whangarei , Interfecus?
  14. there was no sign of mould or fin rot on this fish. The fish that had mould on it is stuill swimming round quite happily in the same tank.
  15. does the addition of Tonic or aqau salt effect the ph level of water? Why would one fish die and the other which has the mould be quite happy?
  16. the tank has been in use for about 4 weeks by these two fish while we discussed the gender issue on this forum, so i just popped them back into the tank they had been living in quite happily.
  17. the cheaper the potting mix, the less fertiliser in it!

    sick gourami

can anybody help please? I put my two gouramis back in the main tank after figuring they were both males  but the juvenile male swordy hassled them. One g. has developed mould, stress i guess so is in a small tank with Tonic in the water. The other fish looked off so put him in the small tank too. A couple of days later, he suddenly started turning somersaults then looked VERY drunk. I did a big water change thinking the salt (1.5 tspns to 10L) might have upset him, added more tonic and some other stress reliever. He spent the next two days slowly dying. Does either Tonic or salt affect the ph level because it was about 6.6, when normally it is about 7.2. The other g. wasn't upset by anything. Is there anything particularly that makes sick fish jump and splash?
  19. they need soil to live in like garden worms and they need bread etc to eat.
  20. yes,. there were several in the shop tank, all a very pretty blue as these two are. So hunt is on for a female!
  21. thanks for your help, it is as I suspected after there being no amorous activity! Is it a case for trying for a swap at the LFS as they told me it was a breeding pair?
  22. if you get in touch with bikiegirl, she will have some ready for sale next month at a better price than the LFS. If you can't wait till then ask if your LFS can gertsome in for you, they do it in in Whg at least on request only.
  23. i love killies too, but as my intoduction to tropicals it wasn't very successful!
  24. Thats the beauty(?) of clay - 3 windy dry days and the garden is half way to concrete!
  25. thanks, this is a very helpful forum! unfortunately the lawn mower calls!
