  1. Looks like I may be getting a new tank, (900 x 450 x 450mm) from a friend who is off to the ice for 9 months. It is setup as a tropical tank, sitting on a couple of large beams supported on concrete blocks. Has about a doz fish in it. I will look at replacing it with my current octagonal tank.http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/my-humble-tank-vt27076.html The question is, what is best to do re setting it back up with his and my fish? I will use my external filter, getting a new spray bar, but use both his and my heaters. Should I keep 20l of water from both tanks to mix with the new water? I know from experience when replacing my water that with both taps on full I get 25 - 30 deg of temp so there is no issues here in re-heating the tanks quickly. Well thats what I thought of doing, put 20l of each tank in the new setup, filling it up with fresh water, chucking the fish in and fingers crossed, all will be swetish? Edit; I can only have one tank here because of space, hence my wanting to combine the two.
  2. Chers guys for your input. Unfortunatley I am restricted in space where I can put a new tank, so 90CM in length it is im afraid. The octagonal tank will be sold when I replace it, there will be no where for it. Just an update of the new tank that is in operation now. Here are some more pics of my fish........... Neons etc Black widow The big fella. The following are fish I have, but I have no idea what they are called. These two look like they are mating, doing some sort of tango dance There were two others that I couldnt vatch on film, they are snake like critters, living under the rocks/stones etc and are orange and black striped, measuring about 60-70mm in length. I hope I havent posted too many duplicates here.
  3. Just thought i'd share with you my humble tank, 650mmx400mm I have had the glass tank for years with goldfish in it. Several years ago the goldfish were moved to an outside tank and tropicals were introduced to this tank. It took me about another year to get around to building a stand for the tank, total height of around 1430mm. Six months after the stand was built and tank set up, a split developed in one of the side seams. Panic reigned for a while and then all fish were transferrd to my "Nappy" bucket used for water cycling. My local petshop hosted my fish for a month whilst I refurbished the tank, replacing all RTV sealing. When I collected my fish, I had a new one in there, as per the photo. It is about 75mm in length, but I have no idea what it is. It occasionally chases some of my other large fish, but dosent attack them. Just swims as fast as lightening. My clown loach is a dag, often sleeping on its side, one crazy fish. There are many others that I will introduce when I can capture them on film. My biggest is a Plex (sp?) that is around 200mm in length! started as a small fella around 20mm long when introduced to the tank. I want to replace this tank with a larger one so I can have propper communities of fish, I will be looking at one around 450x450x900mm in size, again custom making the cabinet.

    Moonlight

I went into DSE today and got me one of those blue LED lights, looks real cool in the dark and during daylight makes the Cardinals really shine.
  5. Does anyone know of the availability of a 12V Car Battery powerd air pump in NZ? No I do not want to use it for power backup situations. I have looked at some crappy ones that run on 4xAA batteries and they are so noisey. :-? I am looking at using one with a restrictor to low pressurise the headlights on my 4X4 to prevent water ingress. 8) Because it will be mounted in the front dash area it has to be quiet in operation, just like the 240VAC Stellar ones that are commonly used.
  6. Thanks for all the replies everyone. Sounds like ripcord is the one to use then. Is there any smells with using this product? I assume it is just a simple case of covering the tank with a blanket or simiar when spraying to prevent any ripcord contaminating the water.
  7. Hello All, first visit and first post! We have a problem with Flies, Ants and worst of all Carpet Moths. I am wondering on the safety factor of using some type of treatment, be it spray or moth balls to use around the house. I have an octagonal tropical tank on a pedistal that I made myself. We need to do something re these pests, esp the moths as they have chewd some carpet in the hall, lounge and bedrooms under furniture. The tank is situated in the centre of the house which is of open plan design.
