  1. That's what im thinking too.
  2. I may leave them both in and running yet. :-?
  3. Nope. left the old filter in there too. I am undecided if I will remove it.
  4. Ok, so im home for the afternoon, im bored and im inpaitent. Typical male I hear some of you saying. So I set about using this fancy test kit I was loaned, here are the results. Ph = 7 High Range Ph = 7.4 Ammonia = 0ppm mg/L Nitrate N02 = 0ppm mg/L Nitrate N03 = 10 - 20ppm mg/L Ph on a different "wide range tester" = 7.5 BTW it looks like the milkiness is dissipating further.
  5. Yes I was lucky there indeed. I cleaned out the old Eheim filter as best as I could, washed the blue scrubber thing under the hot tap, and washed the noodles likewise, then placed that basket back in the filter. The top basket was empty, so after a quick scrub, I placed in it the new packet of Bio filter medium (balls) and rinsed these under the tap to remove all the dusty loose particles. There was no Dacron pad(s) for this basket, so I fashioned one from some scraps we had and placed this basket into the filter. On top I placed an additional Dacron pad as on one website I saw on the set-up of this filter, that's what it too had. I filled the filter with fresh water and added some Stress Zyme. Closed it all up, connected the hoses, plugged her in and waited, and waited, and waited. Nothing happening. It was then I realised that I had overlooked bleeding the hoses in preparation of the filtration process. This completed and away it went. I have kept the other filter running in there for now; I may or may not remove it. Both inlets are at one end and outlets at the other. There is just a wee bit of tidying of hoses to do sometime for aesthetics. I will however need to get a spray bar for the Eheim though as it is just has a hose going directly into the tank. The water definitely looks a lot clearer I must say and the greenish tinge has gone that has bugged me for ages, but it is slightly milky looking, although improving from last night, to this morning to mid day. I have blocked off one end of the tank closest to the window to try to prevent too much direct sunlight entering it. I have also added a dose of both B clear and P clear, that I too was given. Aint it nice to have friends in high places, ones who work in LFS's Lastly I will do a test of the water tomorrow or Wednesday when it has had time to settle with a API Freshwater Master Kit that was also loaned to me for testing purposes.
  6. Update; I have just been given an Eheim 2224 by a friend to borrow, (long term ). It came with a new box of Eheim Substrat Pro (little ball things, and a box of Eheim Mech noodle things. The filter has been used and cleaned, but has old noodles in it. Should I discard those and put the new ones in? These are in the bottom basket with a blue sponge on top of them Do the balls go in the top basket? Does anything go under the bottom basket? Sorry for all the Q's, but this is a new set-up for me. EDIT; I have got it all sorted now, thanks. Aint the internet a wonderful thing?
  7. I just thought the jebo was a tad on the small side with only 2 baskets and noodles plus it seems to become clogged quickly as i have my tank overstocked  so there is a greater amount of debris going into it. This is not helped by my big pleck who devours most plant matter like its his/her last meal. I was given some fine grass like plant (2) and they all but disappeared over two days! I have changed the media (Dacron filters and charcoal) in the not too distant future, but it doesn't seem to scrub the water very well. :-?
  8. On my current 180l tank I have a Jebo 810 filter, but I feel it may be a little small for this tank. What size/make/model filter would you suggest I look at to replace it?
  9. I will try that thanks. I just dont see why or how it becomes clogged so quickly inside the unit tho.
  10. There is a wrong way to use the sponge? It fits only one way that I can see. When I cleaned it out it was chock full of a brown algae sludge. I shook it around in a bucket of water.
  11. Is anyone using a steriliser like this one? http://www.aa-aquarium.com/showroom4.php?id=156&level=1 I have issues with mine clogging up between water changes. My main filter seems fine but the UV light section on this steriliser seems to be blocking up with algae or something. I clean it by shaking it in water, assemble the unit and about 3 days later the flow rate crawls to a dribble. Its pump section runs fine.
  12. Wrap the bottle in a couple of handy towels to catch the drips and if you like wear some disposable plastic gloves, or a couple of plastic bags over your hands. 8)
  13. Found a scouring pad at the supermarket, with a sponge backing and it seems to be doing the trick getting the algae off, but its bloody hard yakka ain't it. One of those things I should do regularly me thinks. The cloudiness seems to have abated now that I have cleaned out the filter pad for the UV submersible steriliser I have. It gets clogged up so damed quick. :-? I still have a green tinge to the water, but at least its clear. Thanks to all of you for the suggestions and ideas.
  14. I might have to look at the pads again and see if they need rinsing/cleaning out as I wonder if the course of algae killer has clogged them up again. I might get rid of the charcoal. I will try this thanks. I will be getting one of these pads later today. Plecks wont look at it so it must be bloody hard all right.
  15. Which is why I did a course of bacterial treatment. There is a little too many fish in there as I recently acquired about 20 unwanted fish. I will post some pictures later tonight. No I cant really do any more covering. I will try that thanks.
  16. Cheers, I think there is enough fish in there already.
  17. Hello all, I have a problem with my tank. It is becoming increasingly difficult to keep the water clean looking. The water is a very mild greenish colour and now its going cloudy. There are fine particles floating in it, like the filter is not doing its job properly or something. I have the inlet on the bottom at one end and the spray-bar on top at the other. I also have green algae spots on the front glass and will have to get a scraper to remove these, they are quite hard and wont come off with the magnetic scrubber. I do a quarter to third water change once a week and feed every third day. I have a Jeebo 810 external filter that I have recently cleaned and replaced the filter foam pads and charcoal. The old ones were rather old, unit is about 3 years old, and it was also full of a black slime type gunk in the unit. The tank is 180L in size and is near windows, hence my suspicion about the green water. But it is here to stay, there is no where else to put it. I also have a small internal UV filter thingy that its foam pad seems to become clogged and requires cleaning every time I do a water change. I have done an algae kill treatment and a Biological Filtration Booster treatment since the filter was cleaned. I will add that I did not clean the noodles too much and used tank water on them. The water has a slight earthy, but not an unpleasant smell. There is more indirect sunlight that direct sunlight on the tank and the external lighting is on for most of the evening. I also have a small LED strip light, (200mm long), for moon lighting affect that runs 24/7. I am wondering if I should be looking at a bigger filtration system? Any ideas, hints or tips here?
  18. Hmmm, cant recall such a shop. Do you think you could try to remember the name for it please? I have one of the DSE type LED strips and was thinking of adding another one to it.
  19. There are exceptions to the rule here too. It all depends on the conditions the different woods are placed in. I have seen some "hardwoods" rot out in a couple of years and some "softwoods" last donkeys years; and vise versa. This I know because I deal with the wooden power poles, that support the wires, that bring you your electricity, that keeps you and your fish nice and warm.
  20. Can someone please piont me to a site where I can easily view pics of tropicals to identify what is in my tank. I have just inherited about an extra 25 fish of varied sizes and types from someone who wanted to start afresh with a select few breeds.
