  2. Yep...Hefa-Lump the 2.2kg turtle will think they are WONDERFUL! and the other turtles as well....
  3. :happy1: Me Me Me ...I'll have the snails!!! ...not the wading bit though
  4. :tears: Not a good life! But unfortunately its very typical of many peoples circumstances :nilly:
  5. The Australian lady who came and did my house assessment told me to make 3 copies of everything, never to send in an original quote/receipt, put your claim number on every piece of paper, photo etc, write a cover letter stating what you have sent them and to treat them like simple people who need LOTS of explanations...... She was very helpful!
  6. :happy2: :happy2: Cool! Will be in touch...in the meantime new turtle is another 'meatpie' turtle  You can feel the movement of limbs and possibly heartbeat through your fingers when he's resting on your hand...like his plastron is tissue paper! Earthquake possibly saved his life...at least he made it here for some good food and sunshine!
  7. Would have loved to Caryl, but was reliant on others for transport so a bit restricted. I did manage to have someone meet me at the Blenheim airport with a bag full of guppy feeders tonight They are happily swimming around in the big tank in my garage now :happy2: I had BEAUTIFUL weather to start with and loved being away from quakes and work for a few days! Already had 1 small quake since getting home tonight...just to remind me what its like. But I had time to dream and scheme about removing the garden from my conservatory and creating several joined ponds in there so there's less glass tanks around the place....mmmm.....next turtle project....
  8. Was up till 3am cleaning up. Big 5ft tank in garage which now has all the fish in it spilt plenty of water....didnt find any fish on the floor, but also too busy to look too hard as water was right through everything at back of garage. Have now halved the water and also halved water in the 6ft in my lounge as those two created the most mess. 56 turtles here at the moment, so lots of tanks to check...some had slid on bases.... basking ramps and lights fallen but not broken..Water in cupboards under tanks and behind tanks/stands...again.... I'm leaving town today. Heading to Marlborough Sounds. Back on Friday, so no idea what will happen if another big one hits. Too hard to think about really. Have set up ponds on driveway for turtle refugees if some arrive or tanks break in the house. Neighbours brick shed wall collapsed into other neighbours property. Hole in road outside my place has sunk a little more...was just filled with shingle after sewer collapsed...I guess they will refill if it sinks too much more.
  9. The thick creamy stuff is seperate to the third eye-lid that is also partially over the eyeballs. If you look at the base of her right eye (left in pic) you can see a tiny whitish patch. This stuff covers the eyeballs. As she rubs and rubs her eyes, some of this becomes dislodged...like thick 'sleep' in the corner of your eye. But each day it is back again. She has only started to open her right eye for the first time a couple of days ago, so the thick stuff is quite hard...must be very irritating on the eye ball.
  10. Ava (snakeneck) didnt make it &c:ry and Pisces has now had 2 x tube feeds and 3 lots of ADE injections at the vet and is on daily Baytril. Eyes are still mainly closed and there's a thick creamy film over the eye balls when she does open them slightly. NO interest in eating, but certainly has alot more energy then when she first arrived....over 4 wks ago....if she doesnt improve over next week I'll have to get an x.ray to check whats happening with the pneumonia. Sad thing is, this was all caused by human neglect and ignorance. Glass lids on turtle tanks are really a disaster!
  11. I'd only just returned with Pisces from the vet yesterday when I got a call about a turtle found washed up from the flooded Avon river. The person who found her thought it was an empty shell. Its a juvenile snakeneck...soooo thin! She had baby snails, seed pods and twigs jammed into her limb pockets which were a bit tricky to remove. She was not moving...but she can DEFINATELY musk! :sml1: (I say she...but who knows! ) The Avon river is basically a sewer thanks to the quakes, so goodness knows what shes been surviving on? She has bacterial infections of the skin and skin is torn off around the feet/toes. In the shallow tank, she just floats and at times moves her head. Occaisional attempts to move limbs and swim a little. She had a vet visit today and x.ray revealed minor pneumonia. If the pneumonia was too bad I'd have had her euthanased. The vet thought she was still too far gone due to the skin and ulcers in her mouth...but I suggested giving her a week to see if she will improve or not. The people that found her would be keen to rehome her if she survives. She did attempt to eat today...but was too weak to connect with the food. Hopefully the injections at the vet will stimulate her appetite and build strength. So now theres 3 boxes lined up on the lounge floor with sick turtles being dry docked, medicated and having antibiotic baths etc etc.
  12. Have a look back through the threads until you find the one about UVB lighting that I posted (was meant to be stickied ). Basically avoid chinese brands....
  13. Another case of neglect. Apparently her tank mate died recently. Not sure if this one will make it either. Have had several euthanased recently as just too septic before getting here. This ones not pink at all, but pretty slim chance of survival. See how concave her plastron is? Shes very thin, calcium/vitamin deficient and no doubt pneumonia...though I didnt get an x.ray done this time. :tears:
  14. :bounce: Amazing! Looking wonderful!
  15. 8pm, tomorrow night ,(Wed), TV 1 will air a special 'Animal Rescue' programme about the various groups/SPCA etc dealing with animals straight after the Feb 22nd earthquake in CHCH. Part of it was the evacuation of the turtles at Turtle Rescue up to HotHouse Turtles and the National Aquarium in Napier. The cameras were out at the SPCA and phoned to see if they could come and film how the turtles were doing...I was right in the middle of receiving hundreds of litres of water from 2 out-of -town sources and the possible evacuation of 45 turtles to Napier...so said "sure...come visit! " No idea whats featured, but apparently some of the programme is the Turtle evac story
  16. Welcome to a fellow Cantabrian :happy2: Glad to have you join. You should come check out the CTT aquarium club here in CHCH. Lots of fun!
  17. Congrats! Very cute tiny baby
  18. Yay for all the lucky reptile owners in Wellington! I may give you a call if stuck for some info down here  My turtle vet is cutting hours dramatically so a bit tricky to coincide at times.
  19. Find someone with a turtle...they'll love to have them for turtle food
