    The What's Up? thread.

My sister is renting my cat for a month  She said she would give me a $10 note, so we shook on it, then she went and drew a picture of a music note with $10 written next to it, and a caption saying "Here's a $10 note. Syk!! Spoon! Spacehead!" Poor Sooty :tears:  Today we made ice cream in cooking class. Yummo! It is actually suprisingly easy to make. Last night I made a berry sauce to flavour it with, and also I made chocolate ganache to put in it too. So it's a "Berry Choc Swirl" or whatever you want to call it The rest of the ganache will be used for serving. We get to eat some of our ice cream next lesson I think, and then some will be for our stakeholders who are coming next Thursday, and then we can just eat the rest !drool:

  3. Just thought I'd share this thread which I found very interesting; http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/plant-id/27486-limnophila-aromatica-discussion-2.html Read the 9th post. Apparently there are three types of Limnophila aromatica-type plants - aromatica, hippuridoides and aromaticoides. L. hippuridoides always has red foliage, L. aromatica green to red (depending on conditions I assume), while aromaticoides always has green foliage. I googled L. aromaticoides (and it came up with a lot if pics of aromatica also :-? ) and it looks exactly like the stuff we have here - green, and with shorter, broader leaves than aromatica. So that's probably why people have been having a hard time getting it to turn red - because it's physically impossible for this particular species. Still quite a nice plant though, but it would be nicer if we had the proper aromatica

Cool! I love little fish!
  5. A 300l/h pump will be fine. Don't waste money buying a higher turnover pump unless you know you will use it for something else in the future. ADA recommend 8-10x turnover so you'll be just fine with a 300l/h pump. The only advantage of having a higher turnover pump is if you want to have a prefilter with a really fine filtration material that requires extra flow to force the water through it.
  6. OK I'll email it to Simon then
  7. Here's a random pic of Hygrophila polysperma 'Rosanervig' if you want it. I can email or post a higher resolution pic.
  8. Still haven't got round to getting new tubes  I think I'lljust get a couple of cool daylight ones from Mitre 10 Mega because they're only $11.00 each I'm getting my breeding tank soon so I'll probably put it off even further   On Monday I was cleaning my tank and dropped one of the terracotta pots and cracked the tank. So I'm borrowing a 90x38x40cm from a local club member. The bits of glass I have won't sit on it properly because they are too small. The 100cm tank had bracing which made it possible, but this one doesn't so I've gone rimless This is how I combat the dust that gathers and any surface scum that may form: Cryptocoryne willisii Cryptocoryne cordata (new leaf growing). This is one of my most favourite plants Hygrophila polysperma 'Rosanervig' (with Atman 8000K and Aqua Glo) Another favourite Hygrophila polysperma 'Rosanervig' (with Aqua Glo only) Apistogramma macmasteri Apistogramma trifasciata (last one :tears: Need male urgently)
  9. Wow great tank, I love mini fish  :happy2: Have you ever considered buying an external filter to maximize space in your tank? An Eheim Classic 2211 or a Hydor Prime 10 would be ideal, and they will contain more media than the internal filter Also the flow rate of each is 300l/h, so it wouldn't be too strong, and you can just put a Bio Clear sponge over the intake to stop fish from being sucked up

    The What's Up? thread.

??? :dunno: Explain Today in Joe's dumb little world... I was cleaning my tank and I picked up one of the terracotta pots to move it.The tank was half full. I heard a vigorous flapping sound (which I assume was a female macmasteri because they always hang out in amongst the plants in the pors) and it gave me a hell of a fright and I dropped the pot and cracked the base of my tank Luckily mum and I managed to mop up the leaking water quickly and then we put towels around the outside of the base of the tank to soak up any more water coming out. The fish were caught and placed in another tank as well as some plant pots, and the rest of the pots and the big bit of bogwood were placed in a large plastic bin. I'm going to go and pick up a spare tank in a few hours (not doing it right away; I still want to cook tea first. Mmmmm curry !drool: ) And just to top it off, I have a huge science exam tomorrow

    Apistogrammas

Usually pairs are good, although some particular males might beat up their female so more have to be added to ease the aggression.
  13. Nah it's just the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H3 that I use for everything. I don't have any other camera. I just waited until the image was focussed and then when I pressed the shutter button I wiggled the camera around a bit and somehow it captures the picture but the light goes all funny. If I move the camera more vigorously though then the whole picture goes funny. I used all sorts of various settings - Auto ISO, Twilight, Twilight Portait, Fireworks, Programme Auto. When I used one setting (I think it was Twilight Portrait), I also adjusted the photo brightness as well just to see what happened...

    Apistogrammas

I'm very pleased for you that you want to get some Apistos. They are simply one of the most coolest fish around. There are only a few species available in NZ, although it makes choosing what species you want easier Apistogramma agassizii 'Double Red' Apistogramma cacatuoides (there's a few different colours available I think, so just hunt around until you find one you like) Apistogramma macmasteri Apistogramma trifasciata Apistogramma hongsloi Apistogramma nijsseni Apistogramma eunotus I think that's it,I may have missed some... They all pretty much require the same care - water with a pH from 5-7, not too hard, and they can be kept with a range of different fish. They are best suited to biotope tanks or well-planted setups so your tank will be ideal for them. Catfish, tetras, rasboras, non-aggressive barbs, livebearers, rainbows etc will all be compatible with them. They do need a varied diet - livefood, frozen food, freeze-dried stuff, greens and veges if they'll eat them (mine sometimes eat mushed-up carrot) and good-quality flake and granules is all great for maintaining good health and nice colours. As for stocking, it depends on what species and how many you have. Some people say that they can be super aggressive and not to stock too heavily, and others seem to get away with it. I've seen a tank measuring 125x45x70cm with about 15 or so pairs in it! I have a tank that's 100x30x50cm, and I have a trio of macmasteri, and I used to have two pairs of trifasciata and they all got along fine. The trifasciata all died bar one female of unknown causes.
  15. Give Zodiac loaches a go. They are bigger than dwarf chain loaches but they still have that cuteness factor that Sophia mentioned
  16. Wow the fish are so healthy and the colours are so strong! !drool: Best African cichlids and tanks on here I've seen on here so far Keep up the good work
