  1. The meter cost $19 at Bunnings, I found it in the electrical section, next to the power multiboards.
  2. I'm using a meter from bunnings. What it measures compared to what an appliance is rated at matches up nicely. 18watt filter draws 18watts on the meter. Since i'm using the same meter all through the test, any comparisons in percent should be reasonably accurate
  3. To be truly accurate I would, however, I couldn't use the ambient temp data in any real meaningful way. I decided that over a week the temp would be close enough on average for me not to worry about it, esp over 4 consecutive weeks. I could do a 5th week without insulation, and take an average over the 1st and last week to give me an uninsulated average week My other option would be to run a heater in the lounge on a low setting, but i'm trying to save money right now.
  4. Being mildly worried about the cost of running 6 tanks around my house, I'm running an experiment on my Community tank. What i'm doing is comparing power usage for 1 weeks power with different insulation each week for the next 4 weeks. Week 1: No insulation Week 2: 12mm Polystyrene on 3 sides, not inc top Week 3: 12mm polystyrene on 3 sides, inc top around lights Week 4: 12mm all around except front during the day / evening. The Test Tank 130L community tank, 5 Dwarf Gourami, 5 Striata Loaches. 5 Tiger Barbs, 4 GBA (young), 1 SAE, 3 BN, 1 Plec, 1 Siamese fighter Filter: Fluval 205, cleaned weekly for duration of test. Heater: Jager 150w, 25 Degree temp Lights: Two 15 watt tubes, on a timer for 8 hours a day. I'll post a pic later this week of this tank, and a new photo of tank with each insulation setup. Any tips or ideas let me know and i'll try and include them
  5. I'm setting up a 2 1/2 ft tank to breed Pearl Gourami. I haven't had much success so far, so thought i'd get some advice. How deep should I make the water level? I take it plants and hidey holes are a good idea? A warmer ie 27-28 degree temp is better for breeding them? Any other tips and advice on breeding Gouramis would be appreciated, David
  6. I've done a search for lithobates ( i assume that is how it is spelt) and can't find much info. Does anyone have the scientific latin name? How agressive are they? Do they get on with the likes of Elec yellows and Demasoni (Both very Young) All help appreciated David
  7. I have one of these, and it was used in my Siamese fighter breeding tank. It works well, although the back sucker is not the best. still, it's not hard to attach it by other means. I recommend these feeders, I bought mine from a Killie breeder in Tauranga, for about $30

    Air Pumps

I've got three pumps that i can recommend The small eheim single outlet (no noise at all!) Stellar s-20, almost as good Serra 275R, Twin outlet, also extremely quiet. I've got all three running, they are all quiet, especially compared to other cheapies i've had, and couldn't stand the hum from. If you've got the money, I'd buy the Eheim over any other.
  9. My tank has a PH of around 7.9, with very young dems and elec yellows in it. Can BN's cope with a PH of 8? Can GBA's cope with PH of 8? Otherwise could i put Siamese algae eaters in there? what ph could they cope with?
  10. Vindy500, I'm thinking about breeding some Cherry barbs, did you have any sucess with your fry, did they survive?
  11. The Kuhli loach looked fine, no obvious marks, nothing different anywhere It was only approx 6 months old.
  12. I just checked my 150L Community tank, and found a single dead Kuhli Loach After running Nitrate, Nitrite and Ammonia tests, which all came back as 0, and observing all other fish looking healthy, what other causes of death should I consider? It's a lightly stocked tank containing 5 Kuhli Loaches 4 Pearl Gourami, 2 Cherry Barbs 3 Glass Bloodfin tetra 4 Bristlenoses. 5 plants Water temp is 25 Deg C, no added salt. Last water change 1 week ago Any suggestions anyone?

    Some New Pics!

I thought that 12v led's were DC, not AC. So without the alternating current, shouldn't there be no flicker???
  14. I vote Fluval, i have 2 205,s and a 104, all reliable, easy to clean, and VERY quiet. It sounds a little like personal preference is the answer, the fluval filters seem the better option in my opinion
  15. How do you grow, culture white worms?? what size are they?? can anyone spare me some to start a culture off? I'd like to use them to bring fish into breeding condition. i currently feed frozen bloodworm and quality JBL fishfood, but would like to include live food is possibile.
  16. This may be a silly question, but how do you sterilize a plant??
  17. If you introduce your new fish by first floating them in a bowl in the tank for 10 min, in the shops water, then adding some of your tank water tothe bowl, leaving for 10 min and repeating this again you should avoid giving the fish a PH shock. Water conditioner (aqua plus etc) should only be used if your local water has chlorine added to it.
  18. I noticed the fish acting a little strangely, but with the java moss in the tank, combined with pot and small ornament and Sword plant, I can;t see everywhere. I did look for eggs a couple of times, but never saw anything. i possibly missed them, if those little buggers were Fry, I'm fairly sure that they were, but until I see them bigger i'll reserve judgement, cas i didn;t see any eggs
  19. I put the water back into the tank, so all is well if they are fry. Now all I need is microworm asap! I think that's an appropriate first food, plus with the java moss in the tank there would be infusia?? in there, wouldn't there?? I could always try egg yolk and a little water mixed up??
  20. I was doing a water change of my blue ram breeding tank, and in the bottom of the bucket there was a reasonable amount of small organisms, mostly on the bottom, but not all on the bottom, approx 1mm in size, could these be very young fry, I did notice the 2 adults were aggressiveish towards the vaccuum?
  21. So as I understand it, elec yellows prefer rocky areas, with a sandy bottom? What colour sand is Natural in the lake, and are the rocks jagged, or smooth?
  22. roflmfao!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  23. I'm setting up my first Lake Malawi cichlid tank, and need some advice on what plants i should use. My fish at this point are Elec yellow's, but I plan to add some Demasoni and some Peacocks in the future.
  24. I'm sorry to hear that too, I narrowly avoided this problem last Sat. Dead aqua one heater, locked on Aaahhhh!
