Welcome, A bit more info on type of filter, tank setup, livestock and feeding regime will help. It could be a sign of overstocking or over feeding.

Yes you can but because of the way it is created it can contain heavy metals which require special tests to determine their prescence. IME I havent seen a marine tank containing scoria that has been running longer 12 months.

How are you getting water from tank to sump, drilled hole and overflow?
