To fill to the top you'll need to use 25mm glass to get a safety factor of 3.8 or 19mm glass for 2.16. 12mm glass will break as the safety factor is 0.86 and 1.0 = the strength of the glass with no safety factor and 15mm only gives 1.35. If you're only going to part fill the tank then the 12mm suggested earlier will only be good for about 750-800mm max. If you're only going to fill to that level then why pay for 200-250mm extra glass you'll never be able to use? I think you'd best get the glass re-quoted in 19 or 25mm or look at using toughened glass (which basically doubles the price for the same thickness). Toughened 12mm would do the job but the silicone join at the edge will be too narrow to handle the force. You'll need at least 24mm of joint width, - so an extra strip run full height. Alternatively a steel frame with the glass set in it would work and be much stronger (although the glass still needs to be the same thickness). Go here to learn about glass: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/articles/techni ... thickness/

Alanmin is correct, it's pressure that affects glass thickness only and this is related to the height. It has nothing at all to do with the volume of water in the tank. Even if the width was only 10mm the glass would still have to be the same thickness as if it was 10km. It's only height, length, panel material, altitude and operating temperature that affects the thickness - width doesn't matter.

What dimensions - 2000L is a very big tank...
  4. Looking forward to it - have never been there...
  5. We have a wholesale chemist here but they only sell in bulk - usually 25kg minimum. I could send you a kilo or two from my stock as I expect the 20kg+ I have left is still going to last me another 40 years...
  6. Mine cost me an arm and a leg... I got 25kg over 10 years ago for about $75.00 I've been slowly using it ever since but still have most of it. I only got so much because I also use it to make the filter pleated cartridge filters safe as well. I use 15 micron on the inlet water to my trickle filter. It also makes the water look perfectly clear. You want some?
  7. I use Seachem's Purigen. It doesn't seem to strip the fertiliser nutrients but does grab colours (tannins etc) and seems to grab oils and proteins well also. It's not cheap to buy but can be regenerated. I've had mine for over 10 years regenerating it every month for about $0.25 each time. I use budget bleach (about 1/4 of a bottle) and 2 teaspoons of sodium thiosulphate to kill the bleach during the regen process. It makes the water very clear and sparkly. It works better than activated carbon and lasts longer for the same volume.
  8. Thanks Dave, I believe a new show-class list is coming out shortly with updates and more info. On a different note, I was disappointed no clubs made the effort to send their delegates to the recent committee meeting (other than the two delegates who were elected as FNZAS officers). I can only assume from this that everyone is completely happy with the current organisation. Hopefully there will be a better response in the future...
  9. The Scholarship offer will last until at least the end of this year.
  10. Yes, all textbooks and papers are supplied for this price...
  11. If you don't / can't get the scholarship it's approx $563 or so...
  12. I believe it can take up to 200 hours to complete but it depends on the knowledge of the person doing the course. It's a nine part correspondence course. You get sent a bunch of papers and reading material. You answer the questions after doing the reading. Most of it is multi-guess I mean multi-choice.
  13. Remember, this course is only available as a scholarship to FNZAS Financial Members, not just members of this website. Being a member of this website does not make you a FNZAS member. You must be a financial member of a FNZAS Affiliated club to qualify for the scholarship. You do as suggested above, advise David Cooper that you are a member. They will check with us to make sure you are currently one of the approximately 280 FNZAS members and you will be registered if you are.
  14. Under the right conditions this plant grows like a weed. I used to have it but got rid of it as it would take over the tank in 2 weeks. Not joking, it would almost completely cover the top of a 2400x900 tank in only 2 weeks. Some of the leaves grew to 200mm diameter. In only 2 months I had over a dozen new plants... Tiger lotus is similar but grows at about half the speed so a bit more controllable. I also think tiger lotus is a nicer plant. If you find the nana plant is growing to fast or taking over to much you could try the lotus instead.
  15. 2100x600x450 tank = 2.05 safety margin 1800x500x500 tank = 1.49 safety margin Either of these tank would work but will be much more sensitive to breakage if not installed on near-perfect surfaces. Made out of 10mm the safety factor rises to 5.69 & 4.15 respectively. Overkill but guaranteed to never break under normal conditions.
  16. With no brace the tank has a safety factor of 2.85 which is better than many tanks in use. With bracing (a strip full length along the front and back and a centre front to back brace) the safety factor rises to 3.60 It should be fine without the brace but will definitely be ok with bracing.

  18. I suggest you allow early debenching under some circumstances or you might find people do not enter due to not being able to leave early enough on the last day to arrive home at a sensible hour... We did this at the 2004 HB show and it only effected about a dozen exhibits out of 200+
  19. We are having a FNZAS Committee Meeting on the 8th September 2007, 1:30pm at Jane Ratee's home, (PM Warren for the address). All delegates present at conference are welcome. Should a club wish to send a different delegate or did not have delegates present at the AGM they will need to notify the FNZAS secretary in writing prior to the commencement of the meeting. No letter, no delegates. Observers are also welcome but there will be limited space so please don't send your whole club. Clubs, please contact your delegates and committee to see if you wish to attend the meeting. We have a few hot issues to discuss: AGENDA – FNZAS Exec Saturday September 8th, 1:30pm at Jane Rattee's house. Apologies: Attendees: Absent: Minutes from previous Meeting: Matters arising from the previous minutes: Applications for membership: Nil Correspondence In / Out: Letter from Alan Wakelin re concerns over trophy miniatures and Fish Show fees. Email from John Clayton Reports: President, Treasurer, Editor. General Business: 1. Clarification of Officers / Exec voting rights. 2. Heads-up: MAF and Importation of species not on the allowed list 3. Heads-up: NZ retail industry concerns 4. CCAS – available to all clubs. 5. Affiliation request from Perth Cichlid Society. 6. Judges and Standards discussion - Issues have arisen since 2004 regarding – Alan Wakelin letter: - Lack of miniatures issued at the 2004 Show for FNZAS Trophy winners - Disagreement with the suggestion that IF miniatures were issued that they should be issued for ALL classes - Disagreement with the suggestion that miniatures will be issued for FNZAS Trophy winners only when the Trophy is returned 12 months after the show event - Who is to pay for the trophy and its engraving - Certificates for the 2004 show not issued in an appropriate timeframe - Certificates when issued were larger than previous years - Certificates issued were all on yellow card, not the colours previously issued for place or award won - Disagreement with the Host club charging an Entry Fee for exhibits - No Breeders Or Pairs classes listed for the Hamilton National Show - No Twin Tail or Fancy goldfish classes listed for the Hamilton Show - Class O & P (Male & Female Guppies) amalgamated (Note that this is against current FNZAS rules) - Lack of information regarding accommodation available for the Hamilton Show - Judging time allowed for the show. It appears the judging is planned to be done in the very early hours of Saturday Morning /Sunday Night so the show can open at the planned time of 10.00am . The talk I’ve heard is that maybe lights would be left on so the fish don’t know its night and stay active. For fish that have only travelled locally this might not be a problem but fish that have travelled many hours this is not acceptable and a reasonable recovery time must be allowed for. The judging has to be SEEN to be fair as well as be fair. All the fish need equal time to recover from travel and look at their best or it’s not worth bringing them. 7. Plant Species Study (NIWA) – action this and pass to the plant committee to research (letter from John Clayton). Next Meeting – Meeting Close
  20. Yep, water hyacinth is a 'Pest Plant' and therefore banned or illegal to posses. If you have it I suggest you burn it before you are caught with it (don't dump it whatever you do...)
