  1. well it only took 10 days but tonight for the first time i saw him actively going after bloodworm. I saw him eat at least 5 pieces so thats something, must be starting to feel hungry

    fish pics

    wow, really beautiful!
  3. no worries, i've just moved the tank in to the lounge and will be filling it in the day or so, so i'll take some photos tonight to show you
  4. Both my juwel tanks which are the rios (so slightly different) have holes drilled in the base for the sump, so i know it can be done on the rios. Redwood aquatics in chch have done marine conversions on the juwel tanks in the past (not sure if they still do). The marine tank i bought just recently is a rio 400 and the previous owners had it converted over through redwoods, hope this helps!
  5. Hey Guys, Just wondering if anyone knows what those juwel flap set ( the lids on a juwel tank ) are made from, looks like a black plastic/wood material? any idea where to buy a sheet of it? Thanks
  6. i had 3 of 4 of mine die but it was at the same time i was battling a bacterial condition in the tank. all the same i don't know if it was that or not as the otehr fish were fine except for a ram. The fourth fella is fine, so i have no idea!
  7. Thanks will give them a go if they still exist
  8. Hey Guys. Im looking for some other brands of hansen connectors, the tank we bought has a tank connector on it, but its not a hansen brand, and i believe its not a metric fitting either ( none of the hansen nuts fit it ).. I believe this is the brand thanks been fitted http://www.pentairaquatics.com/products ... tings.html and the part looks like this http://www.aquacave.com/detail.aspx?ID=438 Its got a Slip fitting at each end, but i see they also make them with threaded ( which is what im after ). The reason i was looking for these alternatives is the hansen connectors have a very large lip and to get a connector that is threaded at each end from hansen makes the lip even larger. ( and that wont fit where i need to put it ). The connector i have is also imperial i think so ive struggled to get any other fittings to fit it. So can anyone recommend some plumbing places that might have these fittings in other brands? Ive tried irrigation warehouse in chch, any other thoughts? Thanks
  9. Managed to get it off but tough, tried various thinners in test spots but they all seemed to attack the plastic a bit. In the end my partner spent a couple of hours with some sugar soap rubbing it with a cloth and removed all the paint so now it looks new
  10. yes sorry i meant dKH. i popped down to organism today and bought some of the seachem reef advantage calcium and the phosguard so that should help
  11. good idea sharn, i'll try some garden worms and see how that goes. I have been treating with prazi as a precaution. His previous home was a planted tank with other discus, and apart from not eating he seems fine, when i put the food in he swims up with the others for a look but then loses interest
  12. sorry thats a typo meant to say 0 - 0.5ppm
  13. pretty much finished cleaning the tank tonight, but still a little work to do before getting it all up and running. Tonight i noticed the occurrence of red/brown algae, i know its fairly common in new setups but i just have a ocuple of questions regarding it. Ran a phosphate test it was around 0 - 5ppm 1. Is there anything i can do to remove it, would phosphate absorber help or do i just have to wait it out? can i physically remove the algae from the liverock when i transfer the rock and livestock to the new tank? 2. The hob skimmer i'm currently using has a media bag as an optional add-on would using phosphate remover in this bag help? At the moment i'm not sure what the media bag holds and i'm only assuming it might be phosphate absorber... I received a jar of this stuff and this is also in the media bag: Can anyone identify what this is if it isn't phosphate remover what might it be? 3. Will the red/brown algae cause any harm to the existing corals? 4. i have a mandarin fish that will be coming home at some point and i know they can be tricky to feed, does anywhere sell live food suitable for marine fish and if so what would be the best? 5. My kH is a bit high around the 13degree mark and my calcium quite low around the 320 mark, i have some kalkwasser here, should i add some to increase the calcium? 6. How many ppl use ro/di water, at the moment i'm only using chch tap water?
  14. not sure if we have black worms in chch, i've only ever seen bloodworms.. will have a look at the shop tomorrow, i still haven't seen him eat as yet, food falls in front of his face but he just ignores it, seems happy otherwise
  15. ok thanks, i'll head tot he paint shop on the weekend and see if i can pick something up
  16. i had read that raising the temp might help but i was a little concerned for some of the other fish that they may not handle it esp neons, sterbai corys? its quite a contrast to my other discus which are so enthusiastic about any food even eating the poor BNs algae tablets!
  17. think organism had them at $1750 last time i was in
  18. i've been cleaning up my saltwater tank i purchased and the previous owners painted the back of the glass and managed to get paint on to the plastic trim. Cabinet is a juwel rio 400 and has a sort of plastic edging around the base. Managed to scrape the paint off the glass easily enough but i'm having trouble with the paint on the plastic does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get it off without damaging the plastic?
  19. Hey guys, On Sunday i bought 2 discus, one red melon around 17cm incl tail and a marlboro red around 8 - 10cm. They went in to my discus tank where i have 3 other discus all around the 12 - 15cm mark plus various other fish. Both fish have settled in well, socialising with the others and not shy at all. The smaller discus is eating, however i've yet to get the big fella to eat, i've tried granules, blood worms, beef heart and flake. I've read that it can take a while for them to settle in and start eating after being moved to a new setup but just wondering how long before i start to worry about him not eating? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what i could entice him with? Previous owner said he was eating bloodworm, flake, beefheart. Water parameters are all good though the pH I suspect is a bit higher than his previous home ( i think he was in the 6.5ish, and now its around the 6.8 - 7 mark) plus its a little cooler, around the 26 degree mark rather than the 28 - 29 degrees in his previous home. Any advice appreciated
  20. i'd agree don't get discouraged by dwarf gouramis they can be tricky things. I've had two die, water parameters fine, they just started hanging out near the top of the tank and floating sideways and then up and died, so dont' take their deaths to heart!
  21. yeah looking forward to setting it up, spent tonight doing some cleaning, the previous owneres had painted the back of the glass in blue paint which had also dripped on to the cabinet... (not sure why they just didn't stick a background on) so my partner was scraping the paint and algae off the glass
  22. just thought i'd put a pic up of the corals that came with the setup. Currently there in the holding tank until i get the tank cleaned so its not aquascaped at all The setup i bought was 5ft Juwel Aquarium with the marine lighting upgrade and spare arcadia T5 lights, Octopus Reef NW-150 Skimmer, Red sea prism hob skimmer, approx 50kg live rock, 30kg coral sand, test kits, various coral and fish food, 2 heaters, circulation pumps, green elegance coral, green brain coral, leather finger?, mushroom corals, feather duster, frogspawn coral, blue clam, yellow tang, 2 cleaner shrimps, 2 percula clowns, mandarin fish, lawnmower blenny
  23. with the cloudy water i ended up started again as just ended up with large salt deposits. So then i used the paint mixer head with the power drill and that worked really well and ended up getting clear salt water
  24. yeah i was stoked it went well, re: the swing arm, it says 1.020 whereas the refractometer says 1.025 however the refractometer says the reading is at 20degrees celsius but its an ATC so does that mean the reading would be accurate at 25 degrees? the swing arm doesn't make a mention of temperature so not sure on that.
