  1. Thanks for the feedback guys, currently the tank is at 27/28 (which i know its a bit weird the neons being in at this temp but they have been fine). B&K you mentioned the gouramis might be need to be removed, is there a reason for that? cheers
  2. hey guys, Well Im looking at buying some discus and am hoping to integrate them in to my existing tank setup and i'm wondering if it would be suitable in terms of filtration/size etc and also the tankmates. The discus i'm looking at buying are a pair 10 - 12 cm. The specs on my tank are 4ft Juwel Rio 300L Aquarium Inbuilt Juwel Filter system (1000L/h) 300W heater Tank is planted with indian stargrass, swords, grasses etc. Currently in the tank are around 15 neon/cardinals, 6 mollies, 4 BN, 4 corys, 2 snakeskin gourami, 4 honey gouramis, 2 blue rams, 1 siamese fighter (female) So any thoughts on whether the setup would handle it and whether the tankmates are compatible? Also in terms of water quality is the filtration sufficient, currently i'm doing water changes fortnightly, would i need to switch to weekly? I have an additional via aqua 300 external cannister filter which i could (700l/h) add if need be. Thanks for the advice in advance, i'm looking to go in to this with eyes wide open
  3. Sounds like hair/thread algae, i treated it with flourish excel in my tank. Ppl often recommend a double dose but i found a single dose worked. Algae turns pink after a couple of days and disappears completely in around a week
  4. Don't know if this helps but my bottle of prazi recommends 2.5mg/L in to the filter box. It then recommends a re-treatment in 3 - 5 days.
  5. I had a marine blue light on my tropical tank for a while and didn't have any algae problems, but when i switched to 2 powerglows i started to get a brush and hair algae problem
  6. Update : Jose (the goldfish above) died apparently

Wow that virgin red really is beautiful, i'd love to get one like him/her. Also the discus just below the virgin red is that a snakeskin variety? love that one too
  8. No neither do I, but i do have to use the url link below the thumbnail rather than just copying the link from the properties tab.

Nice tank GWH, did you buy your discus locally or have them shipped? Also did you buy them from the lfs or a breeder in chch? Im thinking about adding a few discus to my tank. Pity we can't get those discus reef posted in NZ, they are fantastic
  10. When you pasted the link in did you use the URL link listed under the thumbnail of your photo? This is the link you need to use. If you just right-clicked on the photo and copied that link then it won't work.
  11. Im pretty sure it is in the same tank as the other fish as he only has the one tank.
  12. Update: he's bought a gravel vac and cleaned up the bottom and reduced the feeding, however the fish still has pinecone scales so its looking like it might be dropsy. Does dropsy cause the fish to suffer at all?
  13. I agree with it being due to the personality of the fish, and the tank size. I never have any conflict betwwen any of my gouramis and my female fighter, (2 male honeys, 2 female and 2 golden gouramis)
  14. I've let him now, and he's bought a gravel vac, and is going to try feeding some peas so i'll keep you posted as to the outcome..
  15. thanks for the advice Caryl, will pass it on to him and see if that helps
  16. Hey guys, a workmate of mine got 3 fantail goldfish for his 21st about a month ago. Its his first fish and i'm not too sure of his setup or water parameters but he's having trouble with sickness in the tank and i thought i'd ask here for some advice for him. Yesterday he sent he me some photos and its looks like dropsy for sure, but I have only ever seen photos on the net so can anyone confirm for me Here's a photo top down, with one of the other fish next to it. He mentioned that the fish next to the one that looks like it has dropsy has ragged fins as well so i wondered what could cause that Below is a picture of the fish which he says has ragged fins. Also it looks from this photo like the scales on this fish may be starting to pinecone as well? He only has the one tank, and it has only been set up for around a month so quarantining doesn't seem to be an option. The third fish in the tank isn't exhibit any problems. He doesn't have any test kits, and when he does a water change he doesn't gravel vac. He mentioned the fish have been hanging around the filter outlet as well.. So... is the pinecone fella too far gone, should he euthanise it, or is it likely to live on ok without suffering? Also the second fish, do people think that is exhibiting dropsy as well and what would be the best treatment method? Sorry for the long post but I want to try and help him out.
  17. I've read of a few accounts of people stopping feeding bloodworms due to the possible link with dropsy. Just wondering what you and Spidersweb feed as an alternative. At the moment i'm feeding bloodworms to my fish twice a week but if there is something else you guys would recommend instead i'd be keen to know
  18. thanks have just headed over there and posted some questions on it.
  19. Has anyone had any problems with fish reacting to flourish excel? I'd like to try it, but think i remember reading reports of some people having fish die when using flourish excel and flourish iron? Has anyone else had these problems, don't want to kill my fihs
  20. Ok thanks for the heads up , i have only had them a week i'll try removing the affected leaves and see if that prevents it growing back
  21. My SAE's don't even look at the hair or brush algae in my tank  . I saw one of them swim up to have a munch on the algae, decided he didn't like it and swam away.
  22. thanks, no snacks for the gouramis then.. , will keep them in the hatchery
  23. Just wondering what a safe size/time is to introduce fry in to a community tank. I have 4 ruby barb fry which a around 8 - 10 weeks old (not exactly sure), they are around 10mm long. I'd like to put them in the main tank rather than their hatchery but don't want them to be eaten or get outcompeted for food at feeding time. Currently there are rams, neons and cardinals, bristlenose, corys, SAEs, mollies, honey gouramis and golden gouramis. From what i understand basic rule of thumb is anything that can fit inside another fish's mouth could be at risk of being eaten, the only fish im not sure about are the golden gouramis as they're adults and approx 10 - 12cm long. Would they be likely to eat fry?
  24. yes gravel vac every time I water change, which is fortnightly, and i don't seem to be getting an excessive amount of waste out, so the cleaning seems sufficient. The woods has definitely reduced the aount of leaching, so i'm hoping the pH may start to stabilise soon.
  25. Two of the largest fish, a comet and blackmoor I sold last week so hopefully that should reduce the fish load a bit. I'd rather not use lots of chemicals as well (due to the costs and also i don't like adding chemicals willy-nilly), so i'll monitor the pH over the next few weeks without adding the coral chips and see how it goes. coral chips were only $5, so at least they were cheap (even if they don't help .
