Here are the original pictures of nine posted a while ago. I had no luck with breeding these back then. Pictures are of mature female fish. Male is more impressive Tried setting up a tank at that time for this purpose but breeding just did not happen. So gave to a friend who has heaps of experience with breeding cichlids and he has been successful. The arrangement was that we share the babies if they do breed. So they have and there is now a possibility we will sell a few. 6 for a start Maybe pm me with offers if interested and will answer questions as well. cheers

Here is my rant Simian I for one am willing to pay for good quality fish. And what I pay good money for should be advertized correctly I can understand how this mistaken identity can take place when a private sale takes place as happened with Ant n. Especially when the shop sold these to him as Synodontis Multipunctatus and this obviously is not what they are. Identifying the fish correctly this is up to the shops it’s there responsibility to make sure all fish sold to customers are sold as what they are. If a fish is a cross put a note on the tank saying so. If it can’t be identified put type unknown. And then as customers yes it is also our choice to buy these. I was one person who was willing to pay what Ant n wanted for these Synodotis Multipunctatus But only if they were the real true ones. So I checked them out before parting with any cash. I say if possible buy from reputable breeders and do study up on the fish you wish to buy.

Stupid Me I thought you meant Synodontis multipunctatus

Will add you to the list should I be lucky enough to get Fry from them Aquatopia Don't give up looking for these neat fish I bought 2 of mine from a local shop and the others I got from a person on this site Paid good money for them though Let your local shop know you are keen to purchase some but the way things are with importing and especially with regards to these more exotic fish luck seems to be not on us fish fancier’s side. Well worth it should you find some Good luck

Mine would have to be The most complete colour lexicon of Cichlids With every known cichlid illustrated in colour By Dr. Herbert R . Axelrod I have a sighed copy bought quite a few years ago It's around 4 inches thick Always looking and drooling over some of the fish which we can't get here Would recommend this book to anyone interested in Cichlids probably thicker now with more pictures added should you still be able to buy it.

Thanks Freakyfish The male is even better looking but very shy Are Alto's easy to get in Australia? They are very hard to find over here not many come in at all I have just been very lucky to find the 5 I have We need more of these neat fish over here so I hope all goes ok with this pair and they have a lot of fry. Able then to offer others the opportunity to own them All the best

Good answer alanmin4304 I’m colour blind and back in my primary school days they had a way of teaching maths by using little colored blocks of wood. They thought well this kid has a real learning problem You see colour blindness was not recognized as a legitimate disorder back then Times have changed thank god How many people out there think if your colour blind well you must only see things in black and white Not true just have difficulty with identifying certain colors Just a miss wire in the brain but you learn to get around it And now I work with electronics It just means in my case working a bit harder to get around this disorder and relying on other peoples understand and help when I need it. Cheers

Thanks my4age I hope they do breed All up I have 5 Altos but 2 are a different colour a lot lighter in body colour I think out of the five I have 4 males and there seems to be the one female’ but who knows Anyway these 2 in the300ltr tank seem to have paired off
-
Borrowed the camera from work Just 2 pictures of my Altolamprologus compressiceps female The male was camera shy so only got shots of her I think they are red fin or sometimes called fire fin I’m trying to get this pair to breed so they are on their own in a 300ltr tank Quite happy with each other so fingers and fins crossed the do the deed Anyway hope pictures of her turn out ok Cheers

Got Babies approximately 25 Electric yellows And all are doing well eating Micro worms and Brine shrimp She held for 2 weeks not eating so shifted her to another tank just for her where she released them naturally Moved her out today back to the main tank so babies are now on there own Aren’t cichlids amazing fish? It took me a good 10minutes to catch her originally from main tank with babies firmly stuck in mouth No way was she going to let go of them not even while in the net

I probably should have sold him earlier on when he first targeted the first male front As he was also a good looking one I sold him thinking well the alpha male was sorting out the males from females But now down to 5 with the next one targeted not as good a specimen to become the alpha male Thanks for the advice I will think seriously about selling him but only to someone with other Africans Or someone with a very large dominant male already the boss Cheers
-
Front Question Help Is it uncommon to have a very aggressive alpha male? As I have one He’s a very nice looking fish but with bad attitude I wish to keep him but he makes all others in the tank not welcome So have been slowly selling off the others one by one as he picks one out for a beating and then terrorizes that front also stopping it from eating and continually chasing Out of 9 original Fronts I am now down to 5 Maybe I have all males in this colony but I doubt it not out of 9 fish He even attacks his own reflection in the glass Tank is 1800x700x700 plenty of room Setup was originally with many caves and hiding places this didn’t work Tried removing all rock work the thinking was taking this away would leave no territories for him to guard this didn’t work Getting to the point of selling off all my other Fronts and having just him in the tank with other types of Africans as a display tank Other Africans seem to be ok with him Any good advice of other things to try Cheers

It’s so hard to find these fish here in NZ Seems you can get most things across the ditch Great photo’s Gavin Tell me how big and old do these have to be before they breed? I think you should get yours going plenty of people interested in Alto’s Anyway it is good to find a few people with this neat fish I think mine are red fins but not really sure might have a mixture One thing I have noticed is when one sizes another up probably 2 males They darken up in colour almost instantly quite amazing to watch The black stripes almost disappear and the fish ends up almost chocolate brown. I have 2 that seem a bit lighter in colour to the rest and when they meet it’s only the head on them that seems to darken up Any one else out there with Alto’s
