  1. Can someone tell me what sort of fish this is, and what tank size etc it needs. There is one on TM and I was wanting to know more about it.
  2. As Amazonian says. Are these the only two fish in the tank and is it planted. If there are other fish in there and plants they should be okay. Otherwise another 2-3 will quiten him down completely.
  3. Despite what it says the cf1200 can't self prime or anyways mine never has. Fill up the intake and outlet hoses as well with water, then plug in. Turn the intake hose on before you turn the outlet hose on and it should go. Quite often I also have to suck on the outlet hose to get it up and running - tastes gross!!, make sure you have a container handy for spitting out water into if you are in the house!
  4. You need to have a good read up on breeding fighters - not hard to do, harder to raise and you do need a few tanks! Look at sites like www.bcbetta.com and other related sites. I just type betta splendens into my google search and it will give you heaps of info to look through, most of it similar. I found it a great help. Its a good start, just research well first.
  5. I think soky5 was intending to breed them. IME the hatch rate can be huge. Its better to be prepared in advance than have nowhere to put the males. Its not so bad in Auckland but Timaru is too cold to have them in jars unless in a well heated draft free room. (Having lived in Timaru for 11 years myself).
  6. My plain old bristlenose are great algae eaters but in the tanks where they don't reside its good old elbow grease that works wonders!!!
  7. Not for certain but that colour its most probably a male, its not a good photo to tell for sure - ask carriej as its one of hers and she/he should know. Males generally colour up faster, and have larger fins and tails, but not always.
  8. try as I might I can't get anything up on screen!

    Hey hey

Hi, IMO its better to keep a male with more than two females as its more peaceful in the tank - I usually have a male in with at least 5 females to keep the peace. Sharks need bigger tanks and they also jump. Neons, cardinals usually leave fighters alone as do swords but just don't have angels, barbs, male guppies or other fin nippers in the tank or the males fins will disappear again.
  10. Betta Splendens - hopefully stunning crowntails!
  11. I quarrantine - leave them in a different tank for 4 weeks with either spare filter or sponge filter.
  12. Have you any decent CT fighters and will you ship to Auckland (yes I do know how much it costs). Thanks
  13. Seriously, the ChCh water is way colder than Aucklands! Sort of off topic but when people take horses to the Canterbury A&P Show from out of Christchurch they usually take their own water in tanks as the horses get colic (no I'm not joking - from personal experience).
  14. ChCh water might be too cold (not because of the weather) as its from wells, check with some of the locals first. I fill a bucket with cold from the hose and then add a little boiling water if the weather is cold.
  15. He'll probably eat the young guppies and then as they grow they'll nip his fins. Try putting him into a cut off coke/lemonade bottle for a bit and peg it to the inside of the tank with the female fighters in. He should be fine after about a week when you can let him out but he's certainly better off with the other fighters than the guppies. Generally males don't cause problems when theres more than one female in a tank or you could GET ANOTHER TANK
  16. neons, swords, platies, female fighters, anything really that doesn't nip fins.
  17. Oh!! How big do they get, I thought they were tiny fish.
  18. I've got a spare 2ft tank if you want a loan of it for a few weeks. In Epsom, near the Market Rd off ramps.
  19. Have a look at my pics in the anabantoids section under 'show us some pics' and tell me what you think of the male I have and the first two females. The black green one is the one I crossed him with and this is the only spawn I got from him, since then he's eaten the eggs. I'm going to spend the next few months working on getting another spawn and see what happens.
  20. I have external filters with the spray bar at the back, intake at the front and a biggish powerhead at the end on the side blowing any surplus muck down towards the intake.
  21. Excellent, as I said I've never seen one in a shop yet in Auckland. I gather that they don't import females but not sure why not.
  22. Jasmine, if you find someone I'd be willing to go in with you and split the costs. Anything for some great males and I'd love to get a really decent female in. I've actually got no idea what a true female ct should look like, I've got some I think are pretty good but they are ones I bred myself last year and are starting to age a bit.
  23. When they hatch they'll probably be the size of pinheads so keep a good eye out!
