    tank update

The reading on angels is depressing. I always wanted to have a beautiful angel in a reef tank but it just seems to be a too bigger risk
  2. Just a morning after update, mussel was looking very sad in the morning. Shell was cracked and chipped with some flesh eaten. Removed it and it was still alive, so i opened it and fed the rest to the guys. This experiment worked really well with my puffers, kept them entertained for ages, they loved it!
  3. The big puffer in the photo is about 20cm and the small cute one is about 14cm. The porcupine puffer not shown in the same tank is about 15cm.
  4. My guys will eat most types of coral. Thats why i wanted to try and entertain them with this mussel. I do have one coral in with them and they seem to just leave it alone. My biggest problem is the amount of waste these guys make. Its hard to keep the tank in top condition.
  5. Hey Trinity, does your puffer have a go at your corals and you anemone?
  6. They've spent the last two hours chipping away at the shell trying to get the flesh.I would say by morning the mussel will be gone anyway.
  7. Yes i always remove any debris quite quickly. I used to just put in the empty shells for them to chew on but this time i decided to try the whole thing.
  8. I just placed a live mussel in my fish only system with my puffers. Has anyone else tried this for feeding? How long will will a cold water mussel live in a tropical marine tank?
  9. Yes hes mine. There are two other puffers in with him.
  10. Does anyone out there have any experience with these guys?
  11. 4x tube,2x ballasts, 8x tube end holders $ 240ish
  12. Thanks Fay, I think i can source some frozen stuff. The other thing i might try is some glass shrimp. Live food might entertain them for a bit.
  13. I have just purchased 4x t5ho for my new tank. I went with the recommended 3x blue and 1x white, however when they arrived one of them was a red one. Curiosity got the best of us so we had to try it out. It gave a sort of pink tinge to the tank that didnt look that good so we returned it.
  14. Is there anyone who has live whitebait in the Chch area? I thought they might make good live food for my puffers.
  15. Just bought a tank with the intention of using it for marine use. The former owner was using it as a discus display tank and it included some plastic plants and 3x1 foot long pieces of wood. These are of no use to me so if you want them and are in the Christchurch area just pm me and they are all yours!
  16. I have a friend here in Chch running 3xt5ho inside each of 2x ar980 with stunning success. His coral growth and quality is second to none and those that know these tanks will testify to this.
  17. Thanks cookie,im crushed! My dreams will never be realised! Lol

    400ltr pond

Yes the resin is uv sensitive so the painting is important. The problem with partial glassing is that the corners become strong and the edges of the glass start to lose adhesion from the ply and start to peel. To overcome the problem glass the whole tank so that there are no inside edges to come loose.

Looks great! It would pay to keep an eye on the fibreglass on the inside edges. Resins do not like bonding to plywood over a longer period of time and can peel off.
  20. Theres obviously no good time to introduce one as they will trample as they please! The tank will be set up with good lighting and excellent water flow but trial and error seems to be way to go.
  21. When have most people added there anemone to there tanks? Am i better to put him in first and let him find the spot he wants?
  22. Thanks reef, i thought as much about the angel. Still quite keen to get the butterfly cause the system will be very lightly populated.
  23. Having kept a fish only system for a while i decided to set up a seperate coral tank with a light fish population.I would like to get a majestic angel but have heard conflicting stories about there reef compatability. I would also like to add a copperbanded butterfly. Has anyone out there had many problems with these fish in a reef tank?
  24. Any good quality bathroom paint will be fine but i think you will need a good undercoat to seal the mdf first. I think the last time i used mdf i got a alkid based undercoat and this stopped the mdf soaking up the paint. It will take a bit longer but the stand/lid will last so much longer.
  25. I have to say that you guys and gals inspire us newbies with some stunning examples of what can be done All the time and effort(and money!) i put in now might just pay off one day!
