  1. Oh yea and am keen to start a club as well . I'm actually at uni now in the bio computer rooms, there's a big planted tank in here, absolutely chocka with anubia/java fern. I'm going to ask for cuttings soon I think, the plants are growing out of the top of the tank!
  2. Yep 2nd year BSc (Bio/Marine Sci) and yep spend all my pay on fish stuff!!! To the point of not buying food for myself...lol. Could have worse hobbies or habits though 8)
  3. Haha, that's what I thought, but it's river pumice, so has been underwater for a while (so I assume anyway). pH is my main worry really. I want Apistos in the tank (along with threadfin rainbows, sparkling gouramis, bn/ottos and some kind of schooling fish) so don't want the pH to be too high. It'll have a fair sized piece of driftwood in it though. :-?
  4. Would this be ok? Want to set up a planted tank with lighter coloured substrate, on top of Dalton's Aquatic Mix. Plants would be hairgrass, ozelot swords, ambulia and cyprus (so far anyway). Could potentially mix some of the pumice into brightwater gravel if I had to...What do the plant experts think?
  5. Well I just bought another new one in the weekend- Pendulum, In Silico. Not too shabby, growing on me more and more after a few listens too But it definitely has a more 'rocky' sound than Hold Your Colour I think.
  6. I would also be interested in more
  7. They shouldn't be agressive to other fish altough might get stroppy at breeding time. Another thing to watch for is that they can be quite slow at getting food in a community tank so sinking food of some kind is best I agree that they are a very cute fish!

    New Pics

Yea my bolivian male killed my blue They get quite a bit bigger, and can be bullies, so just watch them if you do get a blue. Awesome fish though! And as for the pics- WOW they are stunning Well done, the tank looks amazing and fish are beautiful
  9. http://forum.apistogramma.com/showthrea ... 305&t=7727 There's a male/female pic on there- female looks pretty different from the male. And taken from: http://articles.gpasi.org/apistogramma_borelli.html "The male is larger with a solid yellow head and his body is a silvery blue. His dorsal fin is twice as high as the females’. Both his dorsal and anal fins are sharply pointed and longer than the females’. The females are not a bland looking fish by any means. They are yellow with a black lateral line, a black vertical strip across the eyes, and the first two rays of the ventral fins are also black" Hope this helps Dixon!
  10. Freudian slip there or intentional?
  11. I have Apistogramma viejita- (pair) but they haven't bred yet. In a community tank anyway though so even if they did I wouldn't be able to raise the fry. Such cool fish, love them
  12. Killies will nip fighter fins (in my experience anyway!) although strangely in my case only the females did any nipping. Tank setup looks awesome btw (too lazy to go find other thread and comment hehe  )
  13. Lucky you! Haha I've had to re-buy Tool aenema a couple of times as well, seems to be one of those cds that goes missing every time you have a party  great album!
  14. Me too! Awesome buildup...man I would have loved to see them in concert! Legends
  15. Just be careful with those tiger barbs, they're notoriously nippy fish so may limit what other fish you want to add further down the track...anything slow moving or with long fins will probably get harassed! They're awesome looking fish but can be terrors personality wise. I'd probably go with a couple of gouramis (either dwarfs or pearl gouramis could work nicely) for the top of the tank, and like others have suggested a group of cories for the bottom, plus a bristlenose to help keep algae at bay. Add your bottom feeders a bit later when the tank is well cycled
  16. Pink Floyd- Delicate sound of thunder (live) was the last I actually purchased, most of the cd's I've been listening to lately are promo mixes from djs for dance parties, etc. Lots of good free dance music out there! (and by free i do mean legally so, lol)
  17. Yum!! I'm a soup girl too...Nothing better than a bowl of steaming freshly made soup on a cold winters day! I usually make HEAPS then pour serving-size amounts into containers, freeze then take up to the boy so he's fed for the week 8) I think I spoil him a bit much lol  I cook allsorts of different kinds of soups, but faves would be chicken and vege, leek and potato, pumpkin and pea and ham. I always use freshly *made chicken stock- far better flavour than even the Campbells stuff and easy and cheap to make. Just boil up the bones from a roast chook with diced carrot, celery stalk, onion, peppercorns and a bayleaf for about an hour I start all my soups by slowly sweating an onion and finely diced garlic clove in some olive oil over a very low heat, for about 10-15 mins to bring the sweetness of the onion. (For leek and potato the onion is replaced with a leek of course 8) ). * For chicken and vege I'd then add diced veges and chicken stock and bring to the boil as well as a handful of lentils and split peas, after simmering 1/2 hour I add a couple of diced chicken breasts and simmer until it's cooked. Leek and potato- after sweating the leek and garlic I throw in diced potato and chicken stock and bring to the boil, then simmer until the spuds are beginning to fall apart.. *Pumpkin- I usually add a little curry powder to the onions at the start, then add pumpkin cubes and chicken stock. While it's simmering I roast a head of garlic in the oven (leave skin on, drizzle w olive oil, wrap in foil then roast at 180C for about 45 mins or until soft). Once the pumpkin is tender i pour the mix into a blender, squeeze the garlic in, and add a couple of tablespoons of cream then whizz it up till its all smooth...Yum! *Pea and Ham- for this one I cheat and use a packet mix (Kings ones are good) and just use water instead of stock otherwise it gets way too salty. I throw in a ham hock or some bacon bones to give it extra flavour and chop the meat off the bones into the soup when its cooked. Another great winter warming recipe is beef and red wine casserole- (could be done really well in a slow cooker too). Cube some rump steak and dust in seasoned flour, then brown in a heavy based pan. Add onions, garlic, and diced mushrooms and gently fry for a few minutes, then take out and place into a casserole dish. Add a cup of good red wine to the pan and scrape up all the bits of meat, etc from the bottom, then make up 1 cup of instant gravy and add to the pan. Mix this into the casserole dish as well as some chopped thyme, cover, then bake at 160C for two hours so the meat is really tender. Serve with creamy mashed spuds and steamed green beans and carrots. And the wine of course  mmmm Ok I'm so hungry now!!
  18. Well it's 4 foot so a fairly decent size..so probably a couple of triplefins, maybe a small urchin or two, snails, anemones, macro algae, etc etc...will have to do some research first on what will cohabitate happily! Want to build up the back and sides with rock (maybe a partly fake rock wall on the back) and have ledges and caves for things to hide under. What do you have in your tanks? Do you have any pics?
  19. Ok so after a few walks on the beach at low tide I have decided to go the coldwater route really excited about setting it up...so on the lookout now for a cheap chiller if anyone hears of one. Plus any advice from coldwater marine keepers would be much appreciated!
  20. I do the same with courgette, cucumber etc and also occasionally mix very finely chopped fresh garlic into their frozen food, supposed to be good for their immune system Also feed chopped frozen shrimp and mussel meat (so cheap from Pak N Save- costs like $3 for a months worth of shrimp!)
  21.   Classic thread!!!
  22. That's awesome, much as I've tried and tried to catch them in the act of popping out fry, I've never seen it happen, (inevitably I come back to the tank 1/2 hr after giving up my watch and lo and behold there are countless fry swimming round and mum looking skinny as  ) Must have been a cool sight.
