    New PIKES!!!!

im about ready to cry ! you dont have vinegar on chips?!!?!?!?! i have vinegar on everything! i love it on rice! it really works for me! not common with most people as i seem to have a craving (or obsession if you ask anyone who knows me lol). you must have pickled gherkins!!!?!?!.....right??? you put shake it on the chips, fish or anything else, peoples preferences vary but generally vineger on it all will be good, really makes batter moist nd tasty yummm!!! hehehe. i like a good ol' monsoon of vinegar on food lol wow! you have quite a few more outlets than i expected? are most of them all over the country or at least have a chain? sharn wot did u mean by 'hot chips', do you have cold chips as well or were you being descriptive? mushy peas are pretty common all over but most people, especially geordies like to pretend theyr 'hard' and have curry with it. i like curry with fish nd chips but gravy is good too and its not the proper hot curry, its more just yellow gravy with lumps nd spices in it but its nice. do you have any special sauces out there? perhaps wanganui hot sauce or somesort of brown sauce? fruit sauces at all (apple)? i didnt expect such a reponse about the food, but i think i may have to ask you more about food as it is one of my passions as it seems it is with a few of you at least. as regards the pike, it only grows 3 inch which is tiny. alot of the others grow bigger but varies with species, they really are a beautiful fish and im really impressed with the buy this may sound like a stupid question but do you have bread out there? as in loafs of bread?
  4. hey all! theres 2 things to mention here, think i should start at the beginning as its usually a good place. today i was in york which is sumwhere in the middle of britain, not entirely sure myself, to go to an immigration fayre. itws pretty much made my whole family really want to move to nz and now we have a better idea of how to go about it. on the way back we stopped off in a car park to eat fish and chips (by the way, what sort of food do you have for take aways in nz?) which happened to be a garden centre. getting that close a fish outlet i couldnt resist, i had a look round and spotted this fish at £10 each so bought 7 of them and got £20 off!!! im really happy with em so far and theyr just in the bag as we speak! Crenicichla compressiceps, only grow to 75mm
  5. mines gotta be Pogostemon helferi, fantastic plant, grows really fast, and covers the bottom in no time! we've just got it into the country in the past few months. not sure on it being in nz yet but definitely keep your eyes open for it! http://www.tropica.dk/article_fullscreen.asp?type=aquaristic&id=609
  6. yeah, i like the long stories to read, it gives you so much more information and can sometimes give ideas for other things, maybe il try cat turd in my next breeding project lol. lol at kitty litter too! welcome shroo if its not a lil too late
  7. yup, you summed up exactly how i feel bout the topic as a whole. however i have heard reports of breeding parrots and thus does lead to the suggestion that this is the succession of a new species from this hybrid.
  8. as regards to the flowerhorn, parrot and other man made hybrids (this is not an opinion i support but merely an observation from a scientific point of view) the organism has found a niche for which it fits better than other (the interest from an owner) organisms and so survives so infact its better suited to its environment and thus relates to evolution; survival of the fittest. anyone have any views on that? of course part of the concept is that the genes of the parents for a particular trait are passed on to offspring and this doesnt apply to the heart shaped fish but to hybrids.
  9. we got a tail-less fish in at work a while back but it was in with a load of seemingly normal fish which made me come to the conclusion that it was just deformed and so i made sure it went to a good home upstairs in my sis' tank with other so called 'less normal' fish, shes gives them a good home and they get fed very well. hes been tagged with the name 'stumpy' and can swim faster than the other fish now, much to my amazement. i had no idea that people were doing this sort of thing. there has been a 'pact' made in england where shops sign up to a list stating that they will not sell dyed fish, i think its on the pfk website somewhere??? anything like that in nz?

    Hi There

yeah i agree with Billaney! he would no doubt do the same if he saw my whole house, speaking as a person who managed to infect the rest of his family with fish lol. my sis has got a tank upstairs (180l) mam has got 350l known as an Austratangalawi setup aka mix up of malawis with tanganyikans and a few rainbow fish in there too shes also got goldfish on the kitchen windowsill with a trop tank next to it and ive got 7 tanks in my room (although im only allowed to keep 3 up and running plus the one with the giant african land snails in which i managed to persuade was a good idea hehe). and if you thought that was bad, there happens to be a 'lake' (bout 17foot by 6 by 3-4) in the back garden. this is what happens after 10 years of the fish virus (seems my family is quite susceptible, must be genetic...)lol.
  11. Grrrrrr! i wanna go 2! theyr definitely mollies right? not some sort of mosquito fish (part of the Gambusia genus)? although i can believe they are. one other question, what about the effects theyre having on the wildlife, anyone know what the original fish were before (whenever that was) the mollies were introduced? (stepping into the realms of ecology and i apologise for changing the course of the topic).
  12. if your using the spray bar, turn it so its facing backwards, itll defuse the flow so slower moving fish will feel more comfortable(just make sure it doesnt start leaking). if you can get a hold of Endlers livebearers, they would be ideal in there. they are closely related to guppies but are smaller, more colourful and dont predate on their own young which make them ideal for to be thrown into a tank and left to it. the only problem you may have is locating them...?
  13. im amazed by the amount of species you can put outside! if following this trend, it should be possible to keep ticto barbs aka cherry barbs Buenos aires tetras Pearl Danio and as mentioned before the rosy barb, we have a metallic strain in the uk that would look fantastic in a pond unfortunately i cant try these fish myself as i live in the north of england where its a wee bit cold most of the time and no good for these fish. do you have orfe, weather loach, tench or barbel out there? also ive heard that Aphyosemion gardneri killifish are ok in cooler water but not sure if they would stand the cold as im not sure how low its gets where you are?
  14. they also seem to be so prevalent in your tank as i understand because you are removing the other algae and thus making the conditions easier for the spot algae to grow. if you left the tank alone, the other algae will outcompete the spot algae and your problem wouldn't exist but that wont really help in viewing the fish. algae scrapers will do the job though.

    Gidday!

yeah i agree with caryl definitely. the easiest way to tell the sex of gouramis, at least the pearl, moonlight, honey and gold/lavender/opaline/three spot is by the dorsal fin, females and juveniles have curved whereas males always have pointed (unless its been bitten off or some other means). juveniles mimic females to avoid confrontation to increase their own fitness so they can save energy to invest in growth. bit of an animal behaviour lesson there too, hope you dont mind? i like the pics of the tank, nd the fish look stunning too. nice one!
  16. both decent points, i like aqua one too for the curved front glass but the roblem with them is that they only go upto AR-980 in that range however the larger range of tanks they do are pretty poor quality and in design.

    Peat???

it will attenuate some of the light but i dont think it would harm the plants too much if at all, there are plants growing in blackwater regions of the amazon afterall, im not sure on the dosage though.
  19. thanks for the info, i think custom tank maybe a good option, i like external filters alot, its so much easier to clean in my opinion. i like the sunsun tanks. i dont see why i cant have both hehe.

  21. Ive been doing a small amount of gooooogling and managed to find very little on tanks available except aqua one. Anyone know of other makes and what do you think about them?

    Hey from England

  23. hmmmmmm, i think when i come over i may have to find out about how to import some killifish eggs, just need to find out the relevant info, but theres plenty of time for that. i should be making my way over to nz in june-ish 2008. post pics of the pond please.
  24. Fishboi, i think you should start a thread on your pond and how you did it if you havent already? id be interested to know more about it. we sell galaxiids in the shop i work at, had no idea they live in nz. they may be moved into the coldwater tanks when we get them in next. i think thats guna be something im really looking forward to getting in the pond when we get over to nz and dig a huge pond, most likely with that jcb!!! hehe. anyone seen any good killiefish imported, or is it usually by eggs that people get them?
  25. im not sure on their exact name but they seem to feed on anything left over on the surface, fry seem to love them though and they dont seem to do any harm to the tank. might as well leave em alone
