  1. Youll be pleased to know that its an Assam blue which only grow to 20cm or so as far as i remember, its nothing like those northern snakeheads playing plague to parts of USA. heres a pic of one below, as soon as i get a decent one i'll post it on here. im really impressed with the fancy goldfish thing hehe, the wierd thing is, is that i dont even like fancy goldfish that much. this is simply because ive never thought that they would ever survive in the wild but i suppose your pond is on the way there. what temp is it at (min and max too please)? My dad is going to make a huge pond in the garden when we get over there (but if he rents a JCB, il be digging the pond hehe) and i have a feeling something like fancies wil end up in it, providing its warm enough.
  2. Fwah! im impressed, i was getting a little worried people weren't interested in the thread but wow, i like the fish alot! ive got a gold nugget in my 130l however shes just little atm and i paid about £8 (about $27or so i think) for it, $190 woah, thats worrying, i hope it was full size? and was it a queen or a normal? Those Medusa are gorgeous, theyr the only ladies i like 'bristles' on. i think gold WCMM are just gorgeous, not keen on goldfish but thats cos ive had them for so long and there are so many other fish to choose, the fun part is finding them first. Is it me or are your fancies out in the pond??? ive got a plenty of favourites this year, my snakehead for one, im still trying to get a decent pic of her, my ropefish which i love to bits (both of them) did someone say surinamensis? Geo? my favourite fish which i dont own but would love is the blue limia (Limia melanogaster)
  3. i know its slightly off topic in the fact that its on the other side of the world but i did this with local uk fish. it doesnt seem like there is quite as much diversity but i managed to catch a goby, loads of minnows which to this date i am still unsure of the species and also a fair few plants, which isnt really allowed in this country but i only took a small sample, not the whole plant . i managed to hijack my sis' tank to convert it from a boring old goldfish only tank to have loads of minnows, that goby and a fair gfew stone loach which are still in there (which were also caught at the local river - known as the Tyne). the tank looked really good just a shame the big shubunkin decided minnows would be fun to eat, and started eating 2 at a time lol, i was a little angry as they dont travel well to begin with  theres a few pics of the river where i got em from on my msn space (see link below)
  4. hey all, just thought i might do some research into the fish you get in. so i put to you all; What is the most interesting fish youve seen this year (please let me know if its a new import too)? im curious to know what sort of fish i can look forward too as ive heard you have a fair few more restrictions on imports than here.

    Hey from England

i have never seen this plant before in the fleshy leafness! it apparently exhibits allelopathy (unsure on the spelling) which in a nutshell means it releases toxins which reduces the population of another organism. Ceratophyllum demersum also possess powers like this as well as the fantastic watercress which seems to do a better job at controlling blanket weed in the pond than any treatment we've used (and that is all but a very small few!).
  6. LOL! i think i may have to use that word more often, heard of thingymabobs and whatyamacallits but i shall have to spread the word like the knife of a big hungry bloke spreading clotted cream on his scone!

    Hey from England

i was thinking bout either doing a post grad (which will require a bit more research and will lead on to better prospects i hope) or going into anything relating to my course, maybe the aquaculture industry which as far as i can see is dotted around the country but particularly in Bay of islands (which is where my brother is going- hes a diesel/ heavy vehicle mechanic). Although i would really prefer ecology, its the interactions between organisms that realy gives me the buzz. its nice to know theres a few people from my neck of the woods and no im not from the red and white side however not a big fan of watchin several blokes fake injuries and get paid stupid amounts of money (UK football). Billaney and Fishy_t, how long have you been in NZ? jude, thanks for the link, you have some plants ive never seen yet! im going to miss my frogbit though (Limnobium laevigatum) i have a feeling that some of these plants arent too common? particularly barclaya longifolia, a plant with some rather impressive qualities to it. ecology and plants excite me so much, probably a fair bit more than people expect, o and of course, theres the obvious....food!!! i absolutely adore cheesecake, salad cream, potatoes! sausages! *wipes away drool and gulps*.
  8. no, ive never heard of them, what are they exactly? i was talking bout it at work today lol, doesnt seem like anyone there knew either!

    Hey from England

ahhh nice to know its not just me with the plants. ive managed to seed Samolus which can be found here http://www.tropica.com/productcard_1.asp?id=026, do you get tropica plants in new zealand? as regards to the killies, il have to check the names, both Aphyosemion i believe but il find out the species name too for you. the microctenopoma are known as M. fasciolatum i think (unsure of the spelling). C.acutirostre are lovely, how big are the ones you got?
  10. you have probably got the fish already but its possible to keep bristlenose catfish (Ancistrus) in cooler water down to about 19 degrees, doesnt always work but has about a 90% chance of working. just an idea.
  11. ive got some of the dwarf puffers in with fry, they may pick off the odd one now and again and if i dont feed em for a few days the tqankmates become the object of their desires lol. but as long as they get bloodworm every couple of days they remain rather peaceful, theyr in with endlers fry and fan shrimp, pango eels but no more snails.... not to worry, never really bothered me losing them. just make sure the tank is well planted, i keep loads of frogbit and samolus and java moss in there to give them loads of hiding places or more like steak out spots.
  12. you sure they arent leaches, i know we get those in ponds hiding under rocks in the ponds here, they certainly look like them. lol at 'greeblies'
  13. hey, my name is kris, i come from a place called newcastle upon tyne in England, i just wanted to get to know what the fish world is like on ur side? im currently doing marine biology at newcastle university, just about to go into my second year this tuesday and i cant wait. ive been working in fish shops here for over 2 years and have picked up a fair bit, and before that i was keeping fish for a fair few years. im 19 and have 7 tanks of which im only allowed 3 up and running at any one time. in my 120litre ive got dwarf pike cichlids, plenty of different types of acaras with rope fish, microctenopoma (which i think are fantastic), and assam blue snakehead which is gorgeous! and a few others in my wee 70 litre theres endlers livebearers, dwarf puffers, plenty of fry, fan shrimp, pango eels and even more fry in the last tank (130 l) which is by no means the least there is more acaras, killifish, a blue phantom plec, gold nugget plec blue fan shrimp and a few other wee fish including egyptian mouthbrooders and speckled panchax. on top of this ive also got a tank with african land snails in which are mulitplying fantastically!plenty of fish food as far as im concerned but i do like to grow them on too. it might be surprising to know that fish arent why i have tanks, in fact its for the plants, fish are merely accessories lol. il get some photos of my tanks up soon to show you all. the question which you may all be asking is why did i join a forum that is 12 time zones away? my family and i are actually considering emigrating to nz, not sure where yet but i was hoping that joining here might help in showing me more about the people and the everything that comes with them and maybe give me a fair idea of where would be best. of course i need to finish the rest of my degree which will carry me upto 2008 but its not long and the more i know, the better. i know it says to say a lil about myself but i like to give a little more
