  1. good man Rogan I like the photos. Makes me look good. i have always worried about the quality of photos etc, but anything is alot better than nothing, we are here because we are into Marine tanks, not photo shop. mj
  2. KP, water is fine, usual story, not ususally cloudy, but wanted to try the photo thing. mj
  3. hope this works... I know the quality isnt the greatest. This is under the T5 lighting, with sump underneath. what you cant see cork screw anemoe 2x clowns coral beauty 2 x cleaner shrimp clam torch coral hammer coral 6 hard corals, not sure what they are called manderine fish pulsing zena couple of leathers, yellow, mushroom all small, but like they say, it will all grow up, then it will be my turn to frag... THanks to all those who I have met, all good. That is the secret to this hobby, simple advice that you can build on, and heaps of patience, I am sure the same old questions keep getting asked. James, are you able to look after a sticky of FAQ's for the beginners? mark j

what have you got in the tank? mj
  5. there we go, thanks Steve T5 is short for neon lights... 8)
  6. good to see some of the newbies like myself coming out of the wood work. I am starting to find out the more I know the better it gets, and I have a lot more to know. I have a 400l setup, with a skimmer, dosing pump, MH lights 250k, and some neon lights, blue and white, for a morning and evening effect. I see one of my problems, seeing I have only had it over winter, is keeping the temp down, so I have just returned from "the warehouse" with 2 x $10 fans, hopefully they should do the job. I might see about getting a temp switch that will turn off the MH when it gets too hot, and just leave the neons on, more like an overcast day, and in that way, with the fans and the "overcast day" I can keep my tank temp down. thoughts on this would be helpful. Mark J
  7. so, how do you paste a photo on here, I know how to do the photo bucket with a link, but not sure how to do an actual picture straight onto the discussion (must be an age thing...) MJ
  8. Just wondering how the new people are getting on with their new marine setups. I am doing ok, but probably have similar questions etc that most new to marine have. Hopefully learn from each others mistakes/sucesses. I know that there are the same old newbie questions, is there some where, maybe in the sticky section, where the simple questions/answers can be built up overtime etc. Just a thought. Mark J
  9. where do you pick up the right kind of stuff? I would hate to put the wrong type in there and kill off everything.
  10. so, Steve should we be using anything? or just not plastic?
  11. good encouragement for us new guys, we only seem to have small corals etc. Helps us be mindful of not overcrowding to make it look full in the early stages.
  12. chimera, Friends like you always good to have.
  13. Iduncan The analogy was about the Posted topic, "leave it alone system", as my wife often says "It's not all about you...."
  14. almost the analogy of a little child, we keep telling them to leave it alone, my son thinks his scab on his knee will be alot better off if he lifts the scab and checks underneath for a progress update (so to speak)...
  15. I have a dosing pump for my sump, but it doesnt have a water level switch to keep it topping up throughout the day. there are altenative, but all of them costly at the moment, and I would rather save my money for other things...

hmmmm, wonder if i should get one of these.... I am looking for something I can enjoy and not worry about, I am getting this at the moment, but I am sure that things will change when it all "grows up" a little bit.
  17. i really think that the quality of the photos were not his real problem, it got the point across. I certainly wont show you the photos I took with my phone at the marine zoo, then you would be able to say they are the worst you have seen.
  18. not bad at all. And, I always find that they are better looking in person. How big is this fish? (about) in your photos. mj
  19. I like to think (very limited though ) that there is some kind of halfway point of marine care. As part of the joy is the dependancy on our intervention to keep things going. I think he was lucky he did not let it go to long or it could have all self imploded. Hope to catch up soon wasp, thanks for your support. MJ
  20. so many tangs to choose from, yes, you maybe right about the colour, but I did like the one they had at the zoo up here in Auckland, it was very powder blue. I am sure that it was a very good advertisment for how easy they must be to look after, pitty they do not have it in their budget, but I guess one day they will do a big upgrade on the fish side of things. THe updates on all the other displays are excellent, but maybe they feel that Auckland has a great aqua display at Kelly Taltons. lovey bubble coral as well.
  21. thank you to all who have contributed their thoughts. It is one thing to read about their profile, the other thing is to see what has happened in reality, and I feel that something like a Bonde Naso could also do the trick. They are the powder blue in colour as well, which is what Rebecca is looking for, likes me to have a variety of colour in the tank, she is into interior colours. As for me, I just like lots of everything. Spose we make a good team. Thanks again,
  22. so is white spot something they carry, or do they catch it easily from introduced white spot? If so, I can get rid of it if I set up a qt when it occurs?
  23. thanks for this, but are they any more agressive than other types of tangs? I clowns, shrimp, coral beauty and a manderine, with all sorts of corals. This should be fine here? Are they really as difficult as the profile says they are? mj
  24. Im thinking of getting (sometime) a powder blue Tang. i have heard that some people have some. I would be interested in thoughts etc, and whether they have any interesting/difficult characteristics.
