  1. Hi all. Just had to share this. I imported some tins of AHT BBS eggs 10 years ago and kept them in the freezer.... I found a tin Id forgotton about in the bottom of my FREEZER the other day and thort Id see if they were still viable (thinking yeah right). Well blow me down... not only are they still viable Im getting an easy 90+% hatch rate within 12-16 hours. Boy Im glad I didnt dump it but I am wondering if this is "normal"...not that my fry care :bounce:
  2. Java fern seems to do well in my grow out tanks but only fake plants survive the punishment that my adult africans dish out. Mine drag em, play tug'o'war with em, push em, pull em, dig em up and of late my jacob seems to have fallen in love with one of them
  3. A.Prophecy here's an article that you will find useful. Levamisole should be your treatment of choice as Blue&Kim suggests. http://www.loaches.com/disease-treatmen ... chloride-1
  4. Hi guys. Nkhomo-Benga Peacocks are Auloncara Baenschi. They are also known as New Regal Yellow, Auloncara Benga, Yellow Regal Buntbarsch. So many names for just one fish
  5. I reckon by tomorrow you'll know whether or not you've got a pair
  6. Very nice fishy_t . They look very happy in that tank and the layout is great too.
  7. The advice I was given when I was looking into getting a colony was to sell off the dominant male particulary if he became overly aggressive and let the next male step up. He will in turn bully the next male in line so sell him off if excessive aggression occurs. You will eventually end up with one male (hopefully even two) and in doing so harmony will reign upon the tank Of course its pretty hard to let go of a nice speciman to one that isnt as nice but I guess at the end of the day its either a tank of harmony or hell. I do hope you end up with a few girls. Sounds like youve got a few boys in there.
  8. Malawi species....oh and now blue neon tux guppies I cut back on my malawi species but suffered major withdrawl symptoms so I've gone back and I'm feeling much better now
  9. It certainly looks like pumice that I've come across, however there are other white volcanic rocks around too. Ive never had the slightest ph changes using pumice. Its basically vescular glass but I started using it on the off chance that it would increase my ph levels then gave up and decided that since Id gone to so much trouble Id keep using it anyway. Its got more pros than cons in my opinion, the biggest con is that it will shred your hands if you are handling it for any length of time. Big pieces look like rocks under water and it looks good in African tanks especially if you can find the real white ones. I've gone for the smooth pieces rather than the type pictured cause cleaning them is a nightmare when youve got nooks and crannies.
  10. oops...what I meant by weighing it down with a brick was you have to keep the pumice submerged whilst boiling it and then keep it submerged while quickly cooling it down. Pumice is inert too so it wont alter your ph. It is also a great place for good bacteria to thrive in.
  11. Hi guys. I bin using pumice for years in my tanks. Dont bother trying to weight them down unless they're really small pieces cause they will come up fast and smash your lids. The secret is to boil it, then plunge it into icy cold water. Will have to weight it down with a brick or something. I had quite sizable pieces in my 6 ft African tank and it literally took hours of boiling before I could get them to sink  I've found its best to carve out caves in them once they've been submerged for a bit. Lake Taupo after a storm has its shores in areas littered with the stuff. I dragged my huge bits up from about 20 metres one day when diving.
  12. djsurfs - the shop I bought it off sorted it for me with no hesitation. This was years ago now so I wouldve thought the manufacturer would've made improvements over time. I've never had one since but I would certainly be asking questions about these tanks glass integrity before I got another one (only because of my past experiences with them). As tHEcONCH said, they are very popular tanks and I know people that own them who have never had a problem. Just out interest tHEcONCH was your tank replaced?
  13. No your probably right. Maybe because the stands were optional at the time, they didnt question me or maybe times have changed :-?
  14. I guess I was lucky then. I wasnt even asked if the tank was on a factory stand. It was replaced without question.
  15. A few years ago now I had this happen to me with an Aqua one model (smaller than djsurfs tho). It was replaced only to have the same thing happen twice more and the cracks were always in the bow of the glass. Needless to say I gave up on them in the end, although the service was great, the tanks lost my vote of confidence.
  16. I started off with a few but the dominant male just dealt to the other bigger males (vicious to watch) and then then slowly picked off all the other males. He never touched the girls irrespective of size...one way of determining the sex
  17. Dont you need to live in a place that gets sun?
  18. mmm..I might just get rid of the kids. That way I can afford to run a couple more tanks
  19. My power bill ranged between $50-$70 per month before I came down with MTS then during the cooler months it jumped up to anywhere between $300-$500 per month. Oh to live in a warmer location.
  20. I'm glad I'm not the only one that has had hassles with stripping the girls. They like to hang on and when you finally get her to let go, mum manages to slip out of your hand and before you know it shes darted around and scooped up as many babies as she can I just let em spit in the main tank now. The yellows will stalk them (demo babies are pretty quick tho) but the jacobs and Asta calliptera dont go out of their way.

    FX5

I agree with with firenzenz. For a canister, its absolute value for money. Maintainence on my big display tank used to be a nightmare until I got an FX5, now I look forward to it. I did muck around with the filter media in the begining but once I got that sorted I never looked back. Water clarity is amazing. Cleaning a filter this size is pretty yuk tho...but it certainly does the job its designed for. I wouldnt hesitate to buy another one especially on my african tanks.
  22. Congradulations Ryan and Steph :bounce: :bounce: A future lil helper for the fish room
  23. You can get black aragonite Sand. My rockwork is just under 60 high and I've had no problems. That way my fry and smaller ones have the best chance of getting a decent feed and not end up being a feed
  24. I feed mine decapsulated brine shrimp, live brine shrimp, microworms and finely ground flake. Decapsulated brine shrimp is often on trademe as is microworm cultures.
  25. lol yeah I know the feeling ryan, I've given up on trying to catch my girls in a 800 ltre tank. My rockwork is up to the waterline on one side. Now I just let em spit. I have less mortality rates doing it that way then trying to bring up the young in a rearing tank. Their favourite passtime is to kill each other from the moment they are released in my experience..dont know why  Evilknieval69 theres no such thing as too much rockwork in your tank for these guys. If its up to the waterline even better. My fry shimmy up the rockwork to the surface for food. I guess theyre too busy watching their own butt to think about killing the sibling next to them
