  1. Hi All, I thought this is an interesting story. Wonder why these abalones are not grown here and exported? SITIAWAN: A Malaysia-New Zealand joint venture company has successfully carried out research on growing a temperate or cold water species of abalone at a farm in Kampong Koh here. NZ Silverdale Marine Hatchery Sdn Bhd director Ben Ngoi said his New Zealand partner would be sending about 400,000 juvenile abalones to be grown in 23 tanks at the farm soon. “In two years, we expect to harvest 15 tonnes of abalone worth about RM2.25mil,” he said. Ngoi said yesterday his farm had successfully conducted tests on growing the New Zealand species of abalone (Haliotis iris) or Paua in the Maori language. He said the species had black meat and a blue and green shell. Ngoi, 52, said the joint venture started 15 months ago with Silverdale Marine Hatchery Ltd of New Zealand investing RM1.5mil and his partner Yeap Chin Hing, 45, and he each investing RM500,000. DOUBLE CHECKING: Ngoi (right) and Yeap inspecting an abalone at their nursery in Sitiawan. “Our research and tests showed that the salinity and pH level of the seawater in Malaysia are suitable for our project. Tests were also carried out with juvenile abalones, from New Zealand, placed in tanks filled with seawater and the temperature maintained between 15°C and 17°C. Ngoi said a juvenile abalone grew to an edible size after a year. A unique feature of the company is that it uses the fully recirculating saltwater system, a patented product of Ngoi’s New Zealand partner. “Our tanks do not need to be refilled with seawater. After the initial filling with seawater from Segari about 40km from here we only need to add fresh water to replace the water lost to evaporation. “This means the farm will not be affected by extreme weather conditions nor salt water contaminants such as toxic algae, flooding and run-offs from other farms.” He said the company had also planned to grow the Japanese and American species which fetch higher prices.
  2. wasp, it came as a hitch hiker on some rocks I had collected for my cold water marine. It loves eating aptisia, my tank was too small to sustain a large enough population of aptisia to feed it. It dissappeared before I could release it back to the ocean. I have upgraded my tank now, hope to get lucky again!! Goto this link and read all about it: http://www.seaslugforum.net/anteindi.htm
  3. I used to have one of this but its a cold water marine though!! Anteaeolidiella indica

    Arowana

Hi Buzzy, I have a 2ft Silver Arowana too. I hope you have a big tank for holding the fish you intend to buy coz they grow real big. Make sure you put your tank at a spot that does not have much ppl traffic infront of it, they spook very easily. And make sure you cover the tank with some thing solid coz they can jump. Good Luck!
  5. Hi Kim, Sorry to hear that you are selling. All the best for your future and the coming wedding. Thank you very much for all the advice and great fishes that I had gotten from you. Warm regards, Brian

    Posting Images

guys, you have to host your picture on a web somewhere and use the Img tag with the web address of your pictures. For example : put the Img tag at begining and end of the following web address. http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~kuansl/Mar ... age056.jpg you will have this:
  7. wow, this thread had really speed up.. I had a full weekend and did not go online. Guess what!! we bought a big 4x2x2 tank. But unfortunately its intended for my silver arowana, its at least 20 inch now. Maybe later I can convert it to marine!! Alisha, thanks for the tip on where to buy seahorses!! I currently have a very small shallow marine tank. I think I will hold off on collecting the purple anenome, my tank now has 6 green anenomes!! Don't want them stinging each other, the green ones has killed off one of my brown anenome just because it was next to it. jetskisteve, Thanks for the offer, I am sure the tropical marine is fantastic. At the mean time I am not ready for it yet.. but plans are in motion. For now, I am visiting all the stores, and enjoying the tropical they have for sale!! I think the guys at Jansens and hollywood is sick of me going there every week looking at their fishes and not buying anything!!
  8. Alisha, a purple anenome is cool!! How big does it grow? are they found in rock pools ? Do they look anything like this except being purple?
  9. Pies, what temperature range is considered tropical temp?
  10. the ones I have managed to survived through the worst of summer. At moment I am keeping my tank around 23C. I am not sure about anenome found in wellington, coz your sea temp are colder than Aucklands? But usually anenome in rock pools has to endure extreme heat during low tide.
  11. Hi, how are you collecting the water from the beach? Just scooping them using buckets or using pumps? 100 liters of water sound like lots!! I collect using buckets into an ice box, but it splashes around and sometimes make a mess of the car even when the lid was closed. Ira, you found a red anenome sounds great! I only have green and brown ones, and am still looking for other colors. I find those rock pool anenome very hardy! Hope you can successfully keep it. my Green anenome had split into 4 anenomy and still growing. one of it is the size of a cup! maybe can swap if your ones splits!!
  12. Hi Nick, thank you. my email is [email protected]. I am surprise to hear that Mangrove did not seem to reduce nitrates, since after searching the internet and reading so much good things about it. At the moment, I have no way of knowing the nitrate level in my tank but I do notice foam that occurs after feeding dissappears faster than just with filtration. On the weekend I bough 2 small mushrooms for my tank, I am waiting to see if they would survive my tank. One of it is green and the other is brown, the green one is opening up but the brown one appear damaged when they scrap it off the tank walls.. At the moment I have them pin down onto a piece of rock using a plastic net so they would attach to it. Cheers, Brian
  13. thanks. I guess there is no harm keeping them in the system. I look up the net, and found lots of ppl claiming that it is good. It would be nice to know someone in NZ is using them and had done a proper analysis of the affectiveness of mangrove. they were lots of it mangrove seed on the beach during the summer, so they are cheap.
  14. yes its a cold water marine. I will post some picture of it later. I have continued with my cold water marine setup but have added a plastic sump plus now it also has mangrove plant growing in it. Over the the last few months my tank setup has crashed due to salinity problems and heat. Now, I have moved it to an area where there is no sun light, so its more reliant on artificial light and can control heat better. I have lost quite a few of the inhibitants but luckily the green anenome and shrimps had survived.. I am not sure how to evaluate the effectiveness of the mangrove filtration.
