  1. Surely he hasn't missed the joke?
  2. Wow that would look great with a Tang in it imo Do you use a nanostream or a nanoshake to get the flow?
  3. They seem to love living in foam from mechanical filters and algae too.. definitely some LR would be good but i think it'd be worth chucking in some foam too seeing how cheap it is and that it won't really matter if it becomes a bit of a nitrate sink.
  4. Conch I have an aquamedic all-in-one, not quite as fancy as the RSM but has a lot in common with it. Currently I've got a cardboard fitted PC fan retrofitted onto the feeding tray set to come on when the lights come on. Keeps the tank (with the heater coming on every now and then) at a constant 25.0. Does mean you have to do a bit more RODI top-up though. After exams I'll be dremmeling a hole into the feeding tray and permanently setting the fan into it for a more tidy finish, then I'll be making 3 more hole into the actual hood to try and displace some of the heats from the lights (without causing anymore evaporation). If you don't mind topping up daily (or if you have an ATO which I think I'll be investing in) you can't go past evaporative cooling with a PC fan
  5. I'll look after your RSM for you
  6. Haha reef, you might want to turn to coitus interruptus in the dictionary too
  7. Wow beautiful 'nem! Can you tell us some more about that urchin?
  8. I may or may not have one of these:

I'm guessing you're talking about Salifert Energy? I've got a small pottle of it and I highly recommend it (I think I've mentioned it here before). ~~~ Anyhow, a few of us have conducted a group buy (outside of this site) and it arrived on the doorstep of the organiser this morning. I should have some in the next few days so I'll post here to let you know my thoughts on it. Worked out much cheaper with reduced shipping and didn't have any trouble with MAF/GST despite a relatively large volume - so even if it's a flop it won't be any great loss To those who PM'd me about getting some, sorry but apparently it's against this sites rules to conduct a group buy in any circumstances and my interpretation of the above rule also prevented me from telling you about the group buy organised outside of this site. Cheers
  10. Funnily enough I was looking at this this morning (for study, not to plan any theft! ) so just for fun here's an answer: So yip, you can steal corals. You can, under s 209, only kidnap a person. Oh and just to add to the fun it doesn't matter who physically reaches into the tank, the one distracting will have equal liability as a party to the crime under s 66(1)(b) as, given their intention, their distraction of the shopkeeper would certainly amount to "an act for the purpose of aiding any person to commit [a] offence." Back to the coral though, davidb, that purple bonsai acro is AWESOME!

Ordering from MD is usually a breeze. If 10 people were to order you'd be looking at $120.80 USD including shipping, which works out at about 15 NZD each. Not a huge expense and like I said MD are very easy to deal with.

It's available on Marinedepot. I'll share on shipping if anyone else wants to order some to try? There's a number of different types: http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_AquariumP ... e_spectrum
  13. Grab some Salifert Energy from petplanet.co.nz I'd be pretty confident if there's no nitrates it's a vitamin issue. I highly recommend the above food and if you order some in new it'll be fresher and more likely to have the quality you need. I'm guessing some nori mightn't be a bad idea either..
  14. I'd have the heater on a timer to come on when the lights went out. To keep it cool, while fans would work well the amount of evaporation would neccessitate an ATO on a tank that size (unless you were really vigilant). Have a look at the IceProbe Peltier chillers, they'd be perfect for a tank your size: saltycritter does them in 240v too I think: http://www.saltycritter.com/chillers/ic ... hiller.htm

At 80L I think it'd be worth looking into something like a Remora from Marinedepot. I know you can buy the Nano Remoras without a pump (their pumps are 110v) so you can just buy the equivalent pump here in 240v.
  16. www.nano-reef.com is probably worth a browse
  17. If it's 9~12V DC I'd definitely recommend trying to get your hands on an old computer and grabbing the PSU. I ran fans on a simple adapter (albeit on a timer) and the adapter died leaving my tank to boil. The adapter also meant that (although you can adjust voltage) that it just pumps out 100% of whatever its set to, whereas a PC PSU should only give as is drawn (not sure how it works, but my fans were a little slower and MUCH quiter with the PSU). You do need to jump-start the PSU to get it going though: instructions here. I don't know about the paper clip though, I went with insulated wire
  18. Could you post some more info about where you got the lights, how much etc? They look great! Photos amazing too! Cheers EDIT: To save hijacking your thread - they don't come in the 24" range perchance? I suppose you could just buy the ballasts though.
  19. Yea, I was pretty happy with the setup - but the quote to freight was over $500 USD, that's more than the tank! I was planning on starting slowly with a FOWLR setup then taking it from there, but there's some great examples on nano-reef of what people have achieved in these tanks.
  20. Hi everyone, I've been doing a bit of reading about setting up a marine tank and one of the things setups I came across at nano-reef was the all-in-one Aquapod 24G. Looks like great buying at $299.99 USD but is there any cost effective way to get one into NZ? If not, any pointers on how to achieve that sort of setup around the $500 mark (before livestock, live rock etc. of course) would be much appreciated! Thanks Mitch PS: You can view it here, but I'm sure most of you have read about them.. By the way, if you hate them - let me know why and how I can achieve something better!
  21. Hi everyone, Thanks for the replies - just another question then. If I were to buy LR, how does one go about setting it in formations? Do you just have to buy peices that suit your tank or can it be safely arranged? Thanks
  22. Hi everyone, I got some great help from people in the Beginner's corner last year about setting up a small freshwater tank that's gone really well and I'm not thinking about doing a marine. The MTS I was warned about seems to have set in... I've read a lot around the internet and specifically this forum and just wondered if you could clarify a couple of things: - I live in Takapuna and it seems to be that it's a recommended place for NSW. When you get it, do you just go down to the boat ramp with drums and fill them with water then heat it/balance salinity etc. and add, or is there a neccessary filtration process? Also, is it feasible to just take a drum down to the ramp and fill it (provided the conditions are alright)? - Live rock: What's the best way to do this? I'm quite happy to leave the tank cycling as long as neccessary but I'm still not sure what the best thing to do with live rock is. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks Mitch
  23. I can't count them because they're coming out too fast - there's no lever to adjust the flow and wouldn't pinching the pipe damage the pump? Also, if I added an airstone, then I certainly wouldn't be able to count the bubbles!
