  1. This is what we've used in the past. It's a 500x300x300mm tank, with dividers. The huge glowing orb at the right is a halogen spotlight, we switch off the air and all of the shrimp come to the light and we suck them out with a syphon. At it's peak we were doing 1lb of shrimp every 10-12 weeks. Happy fish.
  2. In our larger fishroom, we used 20 x rena 300w heaters and never had any problems. I would reccomend them wholeheartedly. The price is right too.
  3. It is possible to just buy the hood assembly, or the light fitting in the hood. Make sure you're sitting down when they quote you the price though.
  4. Parts they list for these things are... Complete light unit clear light cover impeller top filter body top filter lid feeder lid intake pipe Not cheap though.
  5. That must have been interesting! I guess with a borneo tiger you wouldn't want your fingers mistaken for a bristlenose either (angel is fine and swimming happily, hope he thinks twice about the cories now, and at least picks on some that he can swallow without getting stuck)
  6. One of our angels must have been hungry and decided to chow down on one of the juvenile cory's in his tank, swallowing it head first. Thats fine (don't mind the odd one going missing) but in this case it got stuck. After staring for a while at the angel with half a cory hanging out it's mouth, my wife summoned me and we had to remove it. Was a first for us. Never seen a fish with a tail at both ends before.
  7. ROTFL I get evil enough stares when i haven't fed him - I think if I fed him peas, if looks could kill i'd be dead. But McDonalds thickshakes are nice! As a treat feeders would be okay I guess. He has 3 feeders in the tank with him, and hasn't touched a single one since we started the pellets. Before then, it was one every second day or so. I'll leave it up to him, and if they're not gone in the next few days, I'll take them out. And maybe try a pea
  8. (slaps oneself in forehead) Thought it was him that I outbid - but it was blazic. Sorry!
  9. Okay... so he's now got some pellets (sorry Ballistic  ) He *loves* them, and will eat as many as he is given. Will only need the odd feeder now for the exercise of chasing them.
  10. Yep, just tried to upload on photobucket but pb seems to be having a hernia and is *real* slow. Sharn - pm us your email and I'll email them to you, or you could just have a look the next time you're over. We're running an aqua one cf1200 on 350Ltr, have had no problems, unlike fluval which we couldn't get to seal and gave away.
  11. We have used energy saver lights from the supermarket. They come in a variety of colours, and the ones we found were 6400k cool whites. In one tank, we manage to get around 100w of flourescent ligt for maybe $35ish inclging the batten holder fittings from mitre 10. Just our 2 cents.
  12. We were thinking of putting him in the foyer, but that would have to wait until we get a tank made specially for him. Thanks for your advise re the feeders. He's on a diet of danios at the mo, I wonder where locally I would find the pellets, or does someone sell them on TM? but yes, great excuse for a big tank!
  13. What else would you suggest we feed... we have a good supply of feeders, might be able to get him something else tho if it'll help him.
  14. Okay, so now that I've fed him, how often do I feed him? Can surf the net, but would rather ask you guys. I guess if theres always feeders in the tank, he won't overeat, but I'm not keen for him to grow in too much of a hurry.
  15. Went on a mission to aucks today to get him, real nice owners he had. Yep, he's in the lounge - all the other inhabitants of the tank have been evicted...... need another tank for them, might put it on the table where all the gear is in the entranceway. Come and have a look, and we can feed him some danios........
  16. He's in a six footer. No other occupants at this stage except what is intended for him to eat, but do have a 35cm plec that he might get on okay with. btw, a nice chap in Graeme Holden in auckland gave me a 6" java fern for you.... do you want it?
  17. New in our tank today. Maybe 40cm or a smidgen larger. Since he's been in, he's inhaled two zebra danios and one juvenile krib :bounce: Happy dance....... Happy dance...... Happy dance....... :bounce:
  18. It pains me, I know. Essentially we're looking for something under the $200 mark.
  19. Okay, We've kept tropicals for years, now moving into a marine setup. We're looking at around 300-500Ltr (depending on how much I can sweet-talk the wife ) with a recirculating sump. So, my question is, which one of these three skimmers have people used, and which one is the better one? These three are all I can source from our wholesaler :-? . They are (in no particular order....) Rio Queen TS2000 Via Aqua MSD-1 Via Aqua AF-1300A Queen SK200 Look forward to your reccomendations
  20. It's a pondmaster 11w, 7000l/h, so should do the trick I hope. As far as price goes, can't say but was very good.
  21. I just was curious - saw the product there and wondered if it was worth a try... We just picked up a uv steriliser (a big gnarley one) today from the wholesaler, with some other stuff. I know that'll sort it out, just wondered.....
  22. We've got an aquarium in our lounge, it's maybe 350L or so, with cichlids, silver dollars and plecs. It does get a little bit of sunlight during the day (mainly on the top of the tank) and goes green in the space of a week, so we have been dosing with accu-clear or JBL clearol to clear it up, which works well. I was walking through the supermarket on a mission to get ice cream the other night, when I went down the wrong aisle and ended up next to the pool chemicals. There was one chemical there (beside all the nasty chlorines and ph balancers and stuff) that was designed for pool algae. This particular preparation was not a chlorine-based algae product, but was a "clump and dump" product, similar to accu-clear or clearol. My question is, has anybody tried using this stuff, or shall I be the first on a donor tank with a donor fish?
  23. What you need to do is make a frame with the 2x4's, then screw thin wood to the outside - that'll be more than strong enough. MDF is a bit different to plywood, another name for it is customboard, it's made from wood fibers compressed together with a glue. You could also use triboard, which is MDF with a layer of thin wood on either side of the MDF. Let us know how you get on.
  24. 2 x 4s will be enough - make your framing out of these, and screw plywood/mdf to the outside to give it some torsional rigidity (big words for making it flex-proof) Our stand's structural strength comes from the MDF, I just put some timber bracing inside because I didn't quite trust the MDF not to sag over time. If you do use MDF, make sure it is well sealed. Or you could fly me over and I'll build you one!
  25. We're using an Aqua One CF1200 l/h canister for our 350L cichlid tank. Great filter, and they come with everything - media, spraybars, hoses, suction. Just plug in and go! Great value for money.
