  4. I boiled the driftwood and the water went all yellow like weak tea. The rocks are in but the woods on hold for now. Is the yellowness bad and can i get it out of the wood? Thankls everyone
  5. Well i did it today and alls good so far. I added some new rocks and plants. Hopefully can get some pics up later. I didnt get a UG filter though. Thanks for all your help
  6. Most proper books (in the adult section) at least tell you about tank maturation and setting up a nitrogen cycle but i guess it depends, those keeping goldfish books in the kids section are useless - no wonder lots of fishies die. But i agree with Caryl we all do make mistakes and we just gotta learn from them.

    Temperature

Ideally it would be good to have it at a constant temp. a change too quickly may/ more than likely will result in shock so try to have the range asap (as small as possible ) maybe if it's at 24degrees then 25/26 high and 23/22 low
  8. thats one big tank but if you have a solid base i guess (am not sure) you could have quite large rocks. I'm not completely sure though. Hope this project goes well - It sounds really interesting
  9. Yes, so maybe the Rainbow isn't quite right for the current tank :-?
  10. depending on size they require a lot of small live food such as newly hatched brine shrimp and mysis and as Caryl said they feed constantly. Providing these foods daily is the hardest part apparently. To my knowledge larger specimens don't take frozen food
  11. new info 'This freshwater cyprinid originates in Thailand and may not be a good choice for a community tank. They like to stake out their own territory in the tank. This territory can be in the form of small caves, rocks and even plants. They will become aggressive with smaller fish that invade this territory. Only keep one of this species in your tank because they will not tolerate another Rainbow or Red Tail Sharks in the same tank. They may exist together for awhile, but one will end up chasing the other relentlessly until the other succumbs.' Fishlore.com
  12. i had 3 mollies all male, they got along well for 5 weeks since i got them. Then two weeks ago the largest attacked and killed the other mollies It was really wierd it kind of snapped like it was hypnotised without the red eyes  hear is a quote about red tailed black sharks which i believe are from the same family ' ...this popular aquarium fish can be a nightmare - aggressive and quarrelsome with its own kind and prone to terrorizing companion fish. Keep with a group of 5-6 with other species only if they are large enough to fend for themselves.' from: The Aquarium Owner's Manual - Gina Sandford Maybe the same applies for your rainbow shark :-?
  13. If the people at the LFS aren't much help your local library may have some dated but useful resource info. under the pet section. (That is provided your near a library). That + this site should get you up to speed on managing your fish and tank effectively. I too made the exact mistake before i discovered this site and my fish suffered Don't be discouraged its a truley rewarding hobby 8)
  14. Ok general concensus that it should be ok Cheers
  15. mines a female and only 5cm But she rules the substrate like a queen even my angels are scared of her
  16. hardness is the amount of caco3 (calcium Carbonate) molecules per million molecules it is measured as dh and in degrees less than 15degrees is soft and above that is hard (i think)
  17. Hi People Can i use rocks from the beach in my tropical freshwater community aquarium? I know to pour vinegar over it to test for lime (CaCo3) but is their anything else. I picked up some drift wood from a stream at a family picnic a few years back. It has sat in the garden but looks good otherwise. Could this be use if it was scrubbed/cleaned and waterlogged? Thanks
  18. its a small internal filter that has a carbon box and a filter sponge (it looks like mesh) that is established no under gravel filter but i guess that could be the time to put one in so its all go
  19. Hi I brought a complete set up and have had it for two months now but i want to change the gravel as it is fruit salad coloured and i want a more natural colour. How should i go about doing this. It is a small 35 x 35 tank with 12 fish and plants. I'm thinking i'de have to do it a small amount every week or something like that Cheers
  20. It always seemed busy - Must have been those who go to look
  21. Hi I was just wondering what LFS would you reccomend around wellington (prefferably in the city or suburbs close to the city) that deal with marines and marine equipment? What ever happened to Fins and Fangs? That used to have good displays it hasn't been ther for years now but it was generally very busy. Did it go under? Cheers
  22. despite my efforts i woke up this morning to find him sitting at the bottom of the container and breathing heavily. He did not take food and has since ceased to be. I have tried my hardest but i think it was too little too late. Cheers for all your help it is great to have a place to ask these types of questions. I think this is just one of the challenges a beginner has to go through.
