i bought a fluval 204 filter today that was used on a turtle tank so ive chucked all filter media away and got new media. scrubed all the plastics bits with boiling water and ive boiled the filter pads till there clean ..... do you think this will be the right sort of cleaning so its safe for my fish or is there something else i should clean it with..... also has anyone ever seen orange filter pads in these fluvals as the pads are orange or are they that colour from the turtles?? ... any help would be cool

i had a problem with algae in my discus tank and the phosphate levels were a bit high so i used some phosphate remover in my filter (was recomended to use this from a LFS that is usualvery good and nows what they are talking about) well within about a half hour of putting it in i noticed a big change in my small discus so i did all the tests and everything was perfect except the PH level was 8.0 .... i removed the stuff from the filter straight away and put some peat fibre into try and get the PH back down slowly..... next day ph was still high so i set up another tank for them .... there in the new tank now with a good ph for them but im thinking they have ph shock... most are doing well now but a couple of my fav ones arnt doing so well......... any suggestions and help would be cool............ thanks
-
well they all seem to be ok......... but it was a late night i tested just after i posted my last message and well i found the prob ..... 8.0 ph ..... it was all go here till early hours. i got the stuff out & put some peat fibre into the filter to try and bring it back down ........ ive just got outta bed and they all look better except for one ive just noticed.... will keep a close eye on him this morning....... gee and im only one day from putting them all in there new tank to

i havnt put anything in except some new plants ( just ground cover) when i was doing a water change last nite i got the sissors and gave it a trim it was like mowing the lawn..... ill do the boiling water thing when take the fish out to put in there new tanks im building as i dont want to upset them at the moment ..... there new setups will be ready this weekend i hope (as long as work dosent get busy)... must just be one of those anoying algaes..... thanks for your help dee_jay
-
ok dee_jay ill have to do it in the bath as its to big to boil in the pot..... what do you think is causing it??? ...... its a pain in the bum..... ive never had this problem before.....
-
this is the type i like making.....
-
dam why is my pic so small..... can anyone tell me what i did wrong??
-
dee_jay heres a pic of the algae im trying to get rid off as you can see from the pic it only grows on top not on the sides..... what do you think???
-
no anks not by a window or the daylight gets no where near the tank.... its strange to me as its a bright green algae and its no all through the tank just on the top of the ship ornament ive got in the tank.... its not growing on the side of the ship e.t.c and as it grows its a real stringy type of algae..... i may have to get some more bristlenose as ive got 2 for a 4 foot tank so by the sounds of it i need maybe 4-6 of them.....theres only 60 watts of light so it cant be too much light i dont think ....
-
pitty your not up near the waikato .... i could have wipped you up a few basic stands.....there pretty easy .... if you want a basic stand just some MDF for top and bottom and some 50mm x 50mm legs. screw the MDF to the legs and you have a basic stand ..... then cut a sheet up and staple gun it around to cover the stand and you end up with a nice stand.... because your only looking at 80l and 100l tanks this type of stand would do the weight easy.... its when you have the project im doing at present that you need a bit more support e.t.c my 2 new tanks will be about 600 to 700 kgs..... if you want me to send you a plan of the basic stands let me no...
-
well jude i was waiting for a smart reply .... but didnt think it would be from you.....lol.... yes the dam algae drives me crazy.... might invest in a uv system if the vodka does not work......

well the above link is one of the most interesting links ive ever read..... i use to dream of doing that sort of thing when i was younger and now i find out its quite easy to do...... maks alot of sence when its explained like that...... im a bit speechless after that story .... but whetu it answers all your questions.... good luck and some pics of when you have done it would be cool... -
hi whetu ..... ive sent you a PM ...... hope you get your tank..... thanks

yes i agree with your last post tanksman..... i havent been on this site as long as most people on here but ive seen worst things put in the forum..... i have his verbal permission ..... but not writtin i didnt think to ask him to write me a note saying " oh yes stompa thats ok " " signed greg" ...(feel like im back at school )... seems to me like people shouldnt bother asking for help with who builds tanks,,flters e.t.c.... as if we say yes we no somebody they will ask straight away "oh who is it can you give me a way to contact them" and we then have to play games by saying " no cant give details" and if it was me i would go away thinking why did i bother going into that site and asking for help.... dam stupid if you ask me.....
-
hi yes i have permisson to give his details out .... was talking to him yesterday when getting my tanks and he said i was welcome to recomend him to others wanting tanks made......... i didnt no i wasnt allowed to have this in a post....
