    Sand

id take the fish out, small sand particles could irritate gills. depending on how well you washed it first anywhere from a couple of hours to a few days but cloudyness can be nailed with water changes i got my sand (very dark grey) from benchmark, its plasterers sand and its had no effect at all on my water or my axies (only have it in axolotl tank right now). deep as you want in, mines a couple of cm at most but i like to make little mountains cause it looks more natural. i think there would be specific depths for plants though so look into that if you want it planted.
  5. the val is the same as mine... exept mine wont spread like that hehehe
  6. look into augmentim (sp) recently been told its a good all round parasite/bacteria killer. its a human med too so your gourami has a bacterial infection in his eye (well whats left of it?)

    WHAT CAN YOu DO

i disagree with dying- its pointless and only for something pretty to look at, no decent fish keeper would help along such a process and alot of the more dedicated fish keepers boycott the stores which is great i also dont like these stupid 'glow in the dark fish' while they might look 'cool' its stupid. why do something like this to a fish just for looks (i personally sleep at night, not stay awake to look at my fish with my torch)? im all for it if it helps something along (obviously making a glow in the dark fish doesnt help much, maybe its a test that will move onto humans so parents can find their kids in the dark???) fish that have been selectivly bred for mutations- well i dont see much wrong as its not messing with the fish, its not injecting them with anything etc etc. basically in my head im thinking if its not used in the name of science (ie cancer cures) or you have to use something (chemicals/other wierd methods) to get the strain its stupid great post alan!!!
  8. wicked!!! great job kookie, be very proud of yourself cause thats one awesome looking tank

    Sand

also if you have it really thick it can get dead spots as there very little water flow/oxygen getting down there to the bacteria, easy to combat though- heavily plant so the roots break everything up or run ya fingers/fork through it each water change. looks great IMO and with a few stones mixed in here and there and a few larger rocks looks really natural
  10. also a welcome from a fellow tgain!!! im out in te puke. what high school ya teachin at?
  11. yeah the albinos doing great, been in the chilly bin for the last few weeks as its been too hot for his small tank he loves it in there though, nice and cool around 19C and hes progrssed onto 'big axies food' now but hes still not as keen on that as he is on bloodworms hehehe. and he makes a terrible mess trying to eat his 3x3x3mm squares  good to see ya on here!! and it sounds like you have got your work cut out for ya!!!! *dreams of having 40 tanks to busy myself with*
  12. sound like you might be playing teacher and giving lessons hehe, good luck!!

    dropsy?

inbreeding releases alot of genetic defects and problems, its like dogs, over the years certain ones have become prone to certain things that werent a problem a long time ago. alot of it is due to people going to one shop to buy their breeding pair out of the same batch, obviously these would be siblings as most shops dont want the hassle of buying males from one source and females from another. maybe, me love fishy, if you bought off a really well known breeder they would be less prone to dropsy? they might cost a bit more but they would be higher quality stock

    Axolotl Skin Query

melanoids are pure black with no gold rings in the eyes (if your in nz you will most likely not have one, im a huge axie freak and have never come across one in all my investigations ) they have a very velvety apperance see http://www.axolotl.org/genetics.htm for colour pics. wildtypes vary in their colours, some from a poo green/olive to a rusty red to a nearly black but they have gold rings around their eyes. seeing as shes 12 years old shes just under the average life span of approx 15 years so i would put it down to age aswell, just keep an eye on her just incase anything develops. i havent heard of age spots personally but its always a possibility!!

    help!

look into lympho, i think it was modern angels fish that has this and was wondering what it was, have a search around. if it is its very contagous and you need to isolate him or kill him, they can get bacterial infections in the wounds so have something on hand for that
  17. frans (the fish dude round here) said you could use augmentim (sp), that its great for all types of illnesses, might be worth a shot looking into, might not need so much meds!!! good luck, let me know how you get on edit- 'Flagyl, or Metronidazole is for bacterial infections and also to treat Hex (hole in the head). Dose rate is 250 mg per 40 lts of tank water every 12 hours, with a 30% water change before each new dose, for 5 days. The dose can be increased to 400 mg per 40 lts in persistent cases, and the frequency increased to every 8 hours. Lights must be off during the treatment, as Metro is destroyed by light. If the fish is still eating, soak some dry food in metro and water. That way it goes straight into the gut where it does the most good, and put the remainder of the metro in the water. ' taken from http://www.discusforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4190 so it looks like your doing that hard out dose, HTH
  18. dont the algae eaters get really agro when they grow up? if so id imagine theyd hassle your rams no end and a breeding pair of BN in the tank will try fend off the other fish that want to eat their eggs. if you wana breed em keep em seperate i say, less hassle if they do lay eggs and then you dont have to move babies or anything. your tanks sounds sweet, id just be careful about the height of the tank, angels like a taller tanks so they might look a bit cramped later on?

    Met

hey all, apparently my discus may have a mild case of hex so will be needing metro, can i get this from my local vet? also wanting to worm them just incase but will be doing this after, what brands of wormers are reccomended along with their doses? im wanting to do a all round worming even if i have to use a couple of different meds, keep in mind my discus are 3-4cm, not sure if the ratio would be any different? thanks all
  20. got java fern, val, camboma which was doing great when i had the lights on it (got the 4 way plug full because of discus tank) and some other grass looking plant. i have a wierd metal thing that can hold two bulbs but it doesnt have a on switch :-? guess ill have to get that up and running somehow and get two tubes (and then make me grandpa make me a hood to conceal everything lol)

    coral rock

what dorks steal coral rock!! unless of course they own fish, and i suspect most good fish owners wouldnt steal :-? hope you find it and catch em, maybe you could grind that rock into their eyes
  22. i try to get foods made specifically for each species ie vege flakes for vegie fish etc etc, theyre each made to provide the right nutrients for the fish or fishes in question, but yeah you can feed them to other fish, but obviously it would be designed for goldfishs needs not for say severums needs.
  23. hey all, im changing my community (will be community discus tank when they grow up) tank to sand soon and am wanting some advice on plant growing. now i dont know jack all about plants, my light thingie has only one tube which i dont think is really a growing tube (very bright white daylight tube, can give specs if needed), however i can get another tube to replace it if i need to (to help plants grow better). because of my dicky bracing on my tank (i have two bars running at 90 degree angels to the front of the tank, one on each third, but the glass doesnt lie flat, it stands up) i will need at least 3cm of substrate to cover the damn glass, i have no idea what its for, maybe ug filters? anyway to help the plants grow im thinking of putting a layer of aquatic mix down? but can i put gravel on the bottom, aquatic mix then sand over the top without the aquatic mix leachign through or the gravel rising up? itd end up being approx a 1cm layer of each. im in no way a plant keeper, so they will have to be able to handle a one tube light, aqautic mix and fertiliser balls/liquid to keep them alive, any ideas for nice plants? im wanting a plant like pygmy chain sword to cover my foreground (is that hard to grow?) or something like that, with taller plants around the edges. id like to keep to a amazon theme if i can. sorry for all the silly questions guys, feel free to make any suggestions/comments
  24. holy hell thats alot of filtration!!! thats more than 10X per hour, probably around the 20X per hour!!! what are you going to be keeping in there lol, trout from super fast ?
