  1. yip, angel still got em but luke (an angel) is bringing me some stuff to treat mine with tomorrow, might be worth popping him a pm?
  2. i use nothing for filtration but i use airstones in summer when the waters warmer but i keep on top of my water changes religiously and larger bodies are easier to keep stable than smaller ones. most people go for a nice internal that you can turn down cause they hate the strong current. cant really use UGF with sand cause it gets so dense and would obviously go thru the plates lol. at 23cm you should be feeding every 2-3 days approx and try to get out any uneaten food food (got a turkey baster? cause they work wonders for spot cleaning poops and picking out uneaten food  ) im not sure what they could be sorry, i think daphnia are brown, no chance of some pics, probably be really hard though if theyre super small. sexing is pretty easy but its not fool proof, the females obviously get fat and have a very small bump between their back legs, males are skinnier and have a large cloaca (bum bump). some go by head and tail width but theyre less reliable but some swear by it. only way to be 100% sure is to see them do their thing. the axolotl site i posted above has a sexing part with pics on it but no above veiws, if youd like some let me know and i can snap some of mine.
  3. if theyre worm like they could be planaria, if theyre Y shaped i have them (cant remember that name but i can find out) and if theyre flea shaped theyre daphnia. lots of things can be found in tanks and most of them arent harmfull but its good to know exactly what you have cause it stops stress aye lol. no need to empty the whole tank but do cut down on feeding (what size is he?) and you should see them drop off cause alot of them thrive on the extra food. now onto the more important part, get rid of your gravel, even if you handfeed axies can still snap at any smell and they will eat it and it can cause death if they cant pass it, sand or nothing is normally the best, large river rocks are hard to keep clean, big pieces of slate get used to. if you would like to look into sand let me know i have some which i use in my tank or you can get it from bunnings (plasterers sand). www.axolotl.org is a good site (nearly as good as this one lol) and if you read around you will come across some horror stories bout gravel
  4. not sure if were allowed to post links on this site so admins please delete if im not allowed, www.theoscarspot.com has heaps of stuff and alot of them are from world cichlids. are you sure hes not constipated? epsom salts and peas might get things moving if you suspect that but salting the tank (1 tbsp per 20L) can help relieve stress, they are hardy buggers so dont give up!

    Fishman

SA's RULE!!! i love the big bruiser fish too, only got one oscar though but wanting a RD or Jag to fill my 460L, gotta love all that attitude aye?
  6. oh dear, i have an oscar so i know what you mean by pet, putting one of them down is like putting your cat or dog down its good that your going to make a effort to put it down though, big fish that would hard to knock on the head and who could do that to a oscar anyway right? be strong (dude? dudette?) and i feel for ya *hugs*
  7. goldfish are some mighty messy fish, id go for at least 500lph and if you think the flow is too strong make a spray bar or face it to the front
  8. if goldfish see it as a snack size theyll try eat it, even if they have to try squeeze it in  bubba guppies are a nice snack for your goldies so i wouldnt count on any surviving unless its extremely planted (goldfish eat alot of plants so might not work too well lol) id say seperate them, less hassle and then you have an excuse for more tanks
  9. they wont come around and have a look though, just test your water if you take it in. ask to see the tests if you go to animal antics, animates or living waters though, they will just tell you its fine, not give you actual readings. are your lights ok still, might be causing your plants to get sad, any fertiliser added also?
  10. the HOB (hang on the back) filters are not water tight so i dont think you would be able to run it as a canister unless you sealed it all up. might work, worth a shot if youve got a spare lying around, dont wana purchase one only to chop it up and have it not work lol. getting a canister would be easier and more beneficial IMO, they hold alot more media than HOB's so have alot more beneficial bacteria for your tank. if you do go the chopping path and it works be sure to post a 'how to' in our DIY section, be a interesting read
  11. just about, gotta cycle it first!!!! the old way itll take around a month but if you can get decorations, filter media etc from an existing healthy tank it can cut it down a bit
  12. but what if its your regular old powerhead thats come off a filter? the inlet part is huge so youd have to mould pipe to it?

    rams and formalin

that was the only stuff they had, i dont know where i can get anything else from :-? airation is not a problem but i find it wierd they perk up when its in there, the male did a few flashes today while it was in there. theyre holding in there but i need to get them into the 40L to treat with furan 2, i got told i can use that along with formalin with no ill effects?
  14. chuck the in part bit on the bottom and move it around? i dunno...
  15. when their big enough to fit it in their mouths lol. with my baby swords i used to mix up a bit of flake with water to make a mushy paste and that worked well, can foul the water a bit though so watch for that
  16. www.trademe.co.nz is a great place to start! otherwise www.deepblueaquaria.co.nz has some 1200lph canisters for 140
  17. imagine selling your house 'whats that hole in the wardrobe for?' 'oh, that was just incase one of my tanks burst so the water had somewhere to run to'... ahh thatd be a laugh. dont think hell decide to go that way but boy do you crack me up!
  18. okily dokilys, some of you know about my ram trouble. lost 2 already (i put it down to the funky mix in that stupid med  ) and now my female breeder is heavily breathing, weve put this down to gill flukes. wake this morning to find my male lethargic, gills hardly moving along with mouth but still moving fins like normal etc, also had a slime coat prob i think as sand was sticking to his anal and caudal fin (resting on the ground). so i moved them both into a holding tank and dosed with formalin for gill flukes (assume the male might have this too as hes doing the one gill thing). the bottle says 5% formalin and reccomends 3 drops per litre, obviously, because rams are sensitive i did one drop, waited and hour, added another drop per litre until i got up to 3. i removed them after 3 hours cause i had to go to work. no il effects on rams during formalin treatment, even seemed to perk up a bit? anyway, the bottle says to dose the tank and then re-dose after 10 days, but from what ive read its leave em in there for 8 hours and remove or is this just with stonger stuff. do you guys have any reccomendations on how long to leave them in for (its hard to sit in front of a tank staring at your fish ready to move them out any second for longer than 3 hours lol). thanks guys, i cant bear to lose these ones, the male is beautiful and theyre my proven breeding pair
  19. lol alan, do you drill holes in your house ie lounge or bedroom for siphons  it is harder to siphon water out with a tank on the floor, takes FOREVER! not sure bout the algae and snails but quarentining them is just as easy!
  20. i think i know the one your talking about and i think they are less agressive. is that the one good sized tank ya got there, congrats this is the link Link Fixed: Bill Mod
  21. 37 tall or 37 wide? youd want to stick to smaller fish then, ones that dont get too big or too tall. that height/width isnt bad at all for your average community considering most only reach 10cm max (bar pleco, if its a common it can reach 50 odd cm so need big tanks). rams are said to be some of the more delicate fish so youd want to plan the tank around them. theyre very picky about water quality, dont like chemicals or nitrates too much. not sure if you mean those 'albino rainbow sharks' or the red tailed black shark, the latter has been known to snack on little fish like guppies your other fish seem fine, careful of barbs that arent in schools, they can be fin nippers so youd want at least six. lots of options, so many fish to choose aye! gunna be fun stocking your tank and the size seems fine to me!
  22. got some crypt of some sort (anyone know what it is?) and it has two lots of roots, ones a harder, thicker brown one and the others are very long stringy white ones. am i supposed to plant both of these? heres some pics http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f351/ ... 0_5207.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f351/ ... 0_5208.jpg thanks to all in advance! p.s. i took alot of the icky brown leaves off so thats why they look a bit bare lol.
  23. bacteria blooms cause cloudyness. did you clean your filters in tap water? if you recently added new fish or overfed the bacteria will be trying to get up to speed. keep up with ya water changes and it should get back to normal
  24. oh, wow, didnt see he was in tga! i only have one female personally but i know antwan had a breeding pair he sold to evil (rogan) so maybe he still has some left over fry that have grown a bit? i know wonderworld has male and females and they do trades, why not see if theyll swap to open up your breeding?
