Joining two tanks with an emersed pipe for fish transit!
sharn replied to whetu's topic in DIY Section
wow, its pretty hard out how the water stays in the bottle! how would cleaning go though? youd have to have the pipes going in down to like halfway or something or would it just be easy to get the water back in the tube after? -
it could be scared of those angels, neons do make very tasty neon snacks either that or you just need to buy more, but dont bother about it unless you get rid or some of the other fish, dont wana keep over stocking just to make your fish feel comfortable. i say drop em angels. if your mollies have bubbas (if you work out what sex they are, if they have that little gonopodium (sp) theyll be boys) just sell em or give em away. dont need anything to eat em and your mollies will snack on em if they find them anyway. howver it could just be old. have you looked at its body? it doesnt have a 'cloudy' looking body does it?

i really like the green cause it blends in with the plants to make it look more colour coordinated (sharn likes coordinating colours) or that maroon. can you chuck up a black one rory? be intersting to see what that looks like, i think white would get marked easily and it looks to bright imo

wonderworld in rotarua has it too

pm me hun and i can put you onto a golden seller in auckland. i got mine off her just as they were coming out but now theyre pretty common. i also keep axolotls (quite a nut on them actually) and i managed to score myself a proper albino off rebecca on here, second one ive seen in nz so far so im really stoked about that. if ya wana pm me i can put you onto the lady and give you some top sites to have a read about them if ya like

thanks luke! do MH lights last longer though? if im replacing three tubes every 6 months at say 20 each thats 60 or so but its worth the 40 odd extra to have extra watts. so id spend around 120 a year on bulbs compared to 100 or so every ... months spose it just comes down to what i want after i read up some more

with tb from what ive read (thought i had a neon with that) they get pretty deformed and can get sores on their bodies? they may have been badly affected by meds or maybe there is something wrong with them, im not sure. sorry i cant help you more, i hope you clown pulls thru!

hey hey guys, dont get ya backs up! to be honest taniwha most pet shops dont know jack poop when it comes to fish and will just sell you what they can to get your money, its the way it goes and i often have to wait for people outside shops to tell them what they got told is pure bull poop (does that seem like im a stalker haha). any good shop assistant knows to ask if you have any 'scaleless' fish in a tank when treating with meds and its a shame they couldnt do that, plecos, clowns, khulis etc are all super sensitive to meds. not digging at ya and its good you found out for future reference aye as a rule you normally on do half dose on a tank with scaleless fish and if that wont effect the thing your treating for on the other fish you may need to remove them so you can use a full dose (that didnt make much sence did it lol) but like luke said, no need to treat if there isnt problems, its pretty stressful to fish. clowns are notorious for getting ich (white spot/ick), were you treating in preventitive for that, if not anything in particular? if it was white spot thats pretty easy to get rid of, up the temp to around 28C (if the other fish can handle that) and dose the tank with a 1tbsp per 40L of salt which kills the ich when it becomes free swimming, normally have to keep it like that for a week or two to kill anything ya missed. just got to remember- salt doesnt evaporate so dont keep dosing, the only way to remove it is via water changes and at that time you replace any you took out ie 20L is half a tbsp. this might not even be the prob lol but just a wee bit more for that brain to store away if you ever encounter it. you want to try keep your tank as med free as possible IMO, keep the water healthy and thatll keep the fish happy and give them a better chance of fighting off anything they may get

you mean furan 2? clowns are scaleless so need half doses normally, but in saying that plecs are scaleless to and catfish experts have used double on them. but better to play safe i say you water changes seem fine, are you aging it first or using dechlorinator? do you mix it to the right temp or add any chemicals to adjust ph etc at that time? im not sure about the swimming sorry, i know they can be wierd but that doesnt sound right. what exactly were you treating them with furan for? hope more can be along to help you soon!

Corydoras sterboi breeding. They never stop having sex!
sharn replied to Aaron_fish_mad_guy's topic in General Breeding
i dont think theyre agressive at all so would be ok id imagine, ive read they prefer to be with the same colour but a group of diff colours is better than a single cory i say! i say go for it 8) -

sterbai is correct hehe, typo id say and yes they are very cool little things, be very cute to see so tiny! -
goes to show how diff fish are in personality, its my BN male thats the digging culprit, had me up till 3am last night because he dug into my aquatic mix, covered everything in 'dust' and i couldnt see 2 inches into the tank, my female has never dug at all and she has only recently moved to sand aswell. he might be digging a nest but hell, hes got caves and driftwood to spawn in! the slate has stopped him before but last night one piece wasnt properly down and he got under it im hoping he will stop cause if this happens again im going to have to move him somewhere else, but spare tanks are running low sadly.

from what ive read dont do water changes while the eggs havent hatched, any slight change in params could kill them (this is only what ive read, no personal experience). and dont worry about losing them, they can take quite a few times to actually get it right and congrats on having stable enough params for them to spawn!

the only thing i can think of, though its a long shot, would be ph shock? when you leave water sitting for a bit the ph drops (i think it only drops) but if you add it straight to the tank (say its a ph of 7.4) your upping it quickly if you do largish amounts, then it drops back down? i always had problems with my babies when i used tap water but now i age it everything seems to be ok. did you normally age it? if your doing water changes daily from the tap you could be add nasties, we had big rains the other day and that would stress your fish. i know theyre pretty far off but thats the only thing i can think of other than some sort of parasite etc

im not much into my cats but i dont think we have long fin BN over here, ive kept my eye out at pet stores cause ive seen pics of them and i like them. havent seen any albino BN, let alone albino long fins either, but like i said, im not too into cats. i wonder if you can bring your cats over that were allowed over here? have to be put in quarentine for a bit though and it could get costly?

for that price your gunna get some small discus, probably around 20-50c piece sized, depeding on how many your after you can get some 6-7cm ones for around 40 normally and ive read theyre alot hardier when theyre bigger, but thats just my opinion lol, good luck on your search!

now to hijack again (does this mean two punches ant? lol). $150 a year is too much for me to pay so im thinking a 150W mh and my 36W tube. giving me a total of 186W for a 220L tank (take out L for gravel etc). is this a pretty good average? id only be getting 108W off my three fluros ill be running otherwise. my tank is 42cm deep. in the long run, taking into account power usage and replacement costs of bulbs/how long they run for before replacing will it work out cheaper with MH and fluro or will the 3 fluros cost less? its going to cost me at least 100 or so anyway to get a double tuber and the tubes to go in it if i go the plain fluro way. thanks to all
-
came up with 111W for mine so my fluros would be sweet? thats pretty wierd how bigger bodies need less light (thats what its saying right), why would a smaller space need so much more, surely all plants need the same amount of light whether theyre in a big or small tank? definatly something to think about, cool link DJ!

HA, im not alone IM NOT ALONE (that didnt make me sound insane did it lol) recently changed my substrate to sand from large gravel and the first night he (Mr Bristles the bristlenose) dug a huge pit, dug smaller ones ever since and got down to my aquatic mix a few times  . he mainly dug in his caves so i was mean and put a piece of slate just under the sand, worked a treat. hes stopped diggin and much as he was but he still does it. ive had to pile up the sand in a few places (which he digs in and puts it back to normal height lol). not sure why the do it, heard its for breeding pits but my girl doesnt like him. sorry i cant help you on the plant side of things
-
ok, on this topic on my tank 220L would a 250W MH be over kill? i have no c02 at all and dont want it right now so i think it might not be right for me however if i dont get it im getting 3 36W tubes (fluros)/ maybe a 150W MH. ive got all the ferts but c02 isnt in the top 5 'to do' list. i have aquatic mix down, with jbl 7s balls for special plants and use flourish excel/lukes ferts. so all you plant books let me know which would be right for me hehe p.s. sorry to hijack ant! you can punch me on saturday lol
-
wow, going display already huh? i got a tank roughly that size custom made for 90 bucks (180L, four footer) so id imagine one equal to that size would only be around 120 or so. but then you need to make/ buy a stand. it all depends on what your after, if you really want a flash display tank then by all means get em if you got the cash, they certanly look awesome filled up with no front joins but seeing as im a tight arse i can probably set up a tank, with a plain stand, and all the bits and bobs and probably the fish for that much. but in saying that i look for cheaper ways to do things these days personally, out of those two, id go the one with the blacky stand, bigger and for the same price :bounce: let us know what you decide and dont forget to post those pics once its full of happy fishies!
-
ok sorted, weve got the meeting place now we all have to decide on a time but it will most likely be on a saturday evening. shared dinner where everyone is asked to bring something to nibble on. well supply some saussies etc cause i can get them cheap from woolies. there were just going to tell you guys what wed like to acheive and what ideas we already have and you can tell us what you guys want out of this club. if we get enough interest well... well go from there hehe dont want to count the bettas before they hatch! thanks brian and jeanette too, will see ya at work jeanette and we can have a chat there
-
lol, dont worry about alan, hes the 'put your location in your profile police' if you could chuck it in im sure he would be tickled pink and then locals can help ya out etc maybe someone could even come round and check out your mystery bubbles
