  1. Thanks for that, Keri Anne! I guess it's time to setup yet another tank - just needed a good excuse  :bounce:
  2. I guess so... not sure...
  3. We also like the Apistogramma agassizi very much! Only problem is that ours turned out to be very aggressive towards Gouramis and Neon Tetras. Just thought I'd give a little heads-up Blue Butterfly Rams are very pretty, peaceful and friendly - they are also fairly easy to breed apparently Here's a link to see a profile on them: http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/profile ... ueram.html
  4. I asked this in another thread but it got overlooked  Would BNs be able to breed in a tank together with Yoyo Loaches or would the loaches eat the eggs or disturb the BNs?
  5. Thanks for your reply I was wondering what these baskets look like. Are they the same as the breeding trap for livebearers, ie with two sloped funnel-like things to protect the babies? I couldn't find any instructions online to make one either... Thanks for that too We have now started removing some of the snails and have also bought two clown loaches
  6. Another idea could be to film the tank and then take snapshots of the movie? That way you wouldn't have the problem of lining the fish up... I haven't tried this as I don't have a good video camera but it might work!
  7. Maybe we're just talking about two different things  I mean common as in: http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/Fishindx/compleco.htm These ones usually don't have much brown or red in their colouring. Maybe you mean 'common' as in not rare? Redspot & Goldspot are not rare... dunno, I might be completely wrong though. As I said not an expert on catfish Yours, Hummingbird, looks like a Redspot to me?!?
  8. Sounds like a common pleco judging from the description. Have a look at these pics: http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/Fishindx/compleco.htm HTH
  9. Spot on. All driftwood and rocks that we collect get boiled for 10 minutes or so and then rinsed. That way you make sure you don't introduce any nasties (including snails) to your tank. Also, we've just been told the other day by a fellow fish-keeper (Thanks Marty !) that one should only use dark wood and not light wood like pine etc. Dark wood doesn't rot... We have one piece of lighter wood in one tank but it has only been in there for a couple of weeks - it could well start rotting eventually. HTH, Dan
  10. I am not sure why but it is definitely not recommendable to flush fishes down the toilet. My guess is that human diseases, etc do not affect animals and other things in the eco-system around us - fish diseases, etc obviously do... Regarding the how-to-kill-fish question: A while ago this has been suggested by Alan and I've been using his method successfully (when I sadly had to ) ever since: 1. Take a sheet or two (or more depending on size) of kitchen roll. 2. Wrap the fish in it. 3. Step on the 'paper coffin' with your flat foot (ideally wearing shoes or similar). Can be repeated but the fish is usually dead after the first time - depends on size of the fish as well. 4. Dispose of the 'package' by throwing it in the rubbish bin. This method is bullet-proof if you don't have tiny feet
  11. Nice and crisp pics there! I like the swords - never seen any like that before!
  12. Could it be a dragon?? :-? The pic is real blurry...
  13. I thought that the males of the Melanochromis Auratus usually turn dark? We have a pair of them and I thought the male was the much darker one with the little yellow spot on the bottom fin and the male is the yellow lighter one?

    Kribs

Very cool ornaments you have there! Nice pics!
  15. I don't think the first one is a common one - I thought the common ones are always greyish blackish - I can definitely see some red / brown there... Not an expert here though
  16. We have: 3 Bristlenoses 1 Very pretty and large Redspot Sailfin Pleco 4 Common Plecos 2 Panda Corys 1 Pretty Pleco which we haven't identified yet... (pics soon to follow)
  17. I have another question related to breeding BNs if I may: Would BNs be able to breed in a tank together with Yoyo Loaches or would the loaches eat the eggs?
  18. Ok, I am sure this has been asked before but the search funtion doesn't work ... :-? We have been very successfull at breeding livebearers but seem to struggle with any type of egglayer (apart from an adult Kribensis pair) so far. I have read around the different species we're trying to breed and we're doing everything right... The only two things that are not by the book: 1. We have quite a lot of snails in our tanks and I am starting to think that they eat the eggs (if there are any). 2. We don't keep the fishes in species only tanks. Seems obvious but the snail issue only popped into my head the other day - any help / opinions / experiences regarding breeding egglayers with snails in the tank and / or in community tanks would be greatly appreciated As an example: We have had 4 Danios for half a year and did not have a single baby yet. For 2 months they were all by themselves in a tank with large pebbles (to make the eggs fall in between), fed right and in good water conditions. The girls had very large bellies at times but no babies or eggs have been seen so far... Any ideas?
  19. Hey radu! I hope your fish gets better! :-? Have a look at this thread: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/dropsy-vt11395.html A while ago we were having some dropsy issues too. HTH, Dan
