  1. Yea fair comment on the lighting... I will probably only be looking at keeping soft corals to begin with however I will definitely look into LED lighting further down the track. It’s also good to hear that my hope of having 2 clown fish is definitely doable I’m also looking at adding a power head to help better circulate the water... does anyone have any suggestions for a tank of this size and what output would be considered about right? (I will head up to HFF over the weekend and check out what they have on offer) -Dan
  2. Thanks, now the waiting game begins.... :-?

    RO Water

I am setting up a small nano tank as well and plan to use supermarket bottled water as most brands have been passed through an RO unit ect... and for a nano tank the amount of water required wouldnt prove to be too costly. -Dan
  4. Hi all, Some of you may remember me from a few years ago as I used to have a smallish reef tank (80l) but I gave it up due to school / time commitments however I am now back and looking forward to setting up this small nano tank. I also hope that others that are considering settings something similar to this up may learn from my experiences as my tank progresses as I will be constantly updating this thread. Equipment list- Aquarium: I have chosen a 30l aquarium with curved edges as my aquarium of choice and I have also painted the back of it black to contrast the bright white of the sand / fish (once they are added). Filtration: As for filtration I have opted not to use a Protein Skimmer mainly due to the size of the tank and the ease of regular water changes. I have however currently got 1 un branded hang on filter (500lph) which will mainly be used for chemical filtration and I am considering adding a second one for increased water flow and further space for chemical filtration media (Carbon mainly). Lighting and heating: At first when I was trying to select the right size tank to see lighting looked like it was going to be a challenge however as the tank I selected is 450mm long this opened up a few more options for me and in the end I opted for an Aqua One double fluorescent lighting system which delivers a total of 30W (2x15W) which is perfect for my 30l of water (1 White, 1 Actinic). In regards to heating I have a small Aqua One 55W heater hidden behind the large piece of rock which worked out well. Contents: I have added 2kgs of (once) live rock and decided to use a thin layer of Aragonite as the substrate for its bright white appearance. As this tank was set up today (20/10) I will need to wait at least 2-4 weeks before adding anything further however I would be interested in purchasing a snail or 2 within the next couple of weeks if anyone has any they do not need . Aqua Scaping: With water and lighting: Once it has cycled my plans are to add a few easy to care for yet vibrant Soft Corals and I am also hoping this will be able to support 2 Clown fish + a Cleaner Shrimp of some sort however I would appreciate comments on what you believe this tank could sustain bio load wise with frequent water changes. Also as I do not have an RO unit I will be doing all of my water changes with bottled water from the supermarket which as far as I can tell should be fine. I will do my best to keep this thread constantly updated with new pictures and please ask if you have any questions regarding my set up or and feedback as to what I could improve ect - Dan

    Feeding

Hi, i feed flake in the mornings and granules at night and every few days i feed frozen mysis and sometimes marine tucker- (frozen mixture of seafood from bio supliers). Should really feed some nori or something similar for my tang but i hope the spurilina flakes will be ok. Dan
  6. Hi, i have a coral bannded shrimp. It gets on ok with my cleaner shrimp although it will chase it if it gets to close but not really a problem. It dosent harm any of my mushrooms or leathers that i have and gets on fine with my fish (blue tang, lemon peel dwarf angel, clown fish). Not sure about bristle worm control as i dont have any (or very few). Dan
  7. nsw 10% once every 2-4 weeks
  8. Hi, sorry i forgot to mention what corals i have  . Atm i only have mushrooms and a leather coral as 40w's of light isnt really a lot for much else. Also with the SCWD where could i get one and how much do they cost? Have also returned the seio pump as it was making strange noises--like rattling, and then off course when they tried it it worked perfectly  but still got a refund . Thanks Dan
  9. Just thought i would also mention what i have in my current tank (90l). I have owned it for about a year and it had been privously set up for about 4 years. It is one of thoose aqua one all in one tanks (AR-620): Blue tang---Yes i know everyone will say its 2 small but he is very healthy ect... Lemon peel dwarf angel 2x Clown fish---not quite sure which ones they are.. (nemo ones ) Coralbannded shrimp and a cleaner shrimp. Various clean up crew... Dan
  10. Hi, i have been collecting items for my new tank lately. I currently have a 90l mini reef. I will be upgrading to a 173l. Hoping to keep lots of LPS and some softies and possibly clams, will these be ok under my lighting? . My new tank is a normal 3ft tank it is 920mmX450mmX500mm with a built in corner overflow. It will have a 55l sump and will be light by a single 150W DE MH light. Skimming will be perfromed be a red sea prizm pro hung off sump. Water flow ill be a seio 620 2400LPH powerhead, and there will also be the sump return which is a via aqua 4300LPH....I have heard this may be to much?? i plan to have the return pipe coming in to the tank in 2 places... was thinking about a SCWD how much are they and are they a good idea? Stand is being made soon so will post pics and further progress when completed. Anways enough of me talking here is some pics. (hope they work) Main display tank Sump prizm pro skimmer Lighting Substrate.. coral sand and argonite seio 620 powerhead Return pump (on loan from steve to see how it works out ) Please tell me what you think. And would also like to thank Steve (jetskisteve) for all the help and advice.
  11. Hi, i am not really sure what it is but it looks like a green version of cyno (if there is such a thing lol). Are the areas where its growing in a low flow area---as cyno loves this. sorry i cant be very helpful but im sure someone will know for sure. Cheers Dan
  12. Hi, welcome to fnzas. With your tank it doesent sound overstocked. And as caryl said marine is expensive as i know to well :-? But its reallly cool because the fish have so much brighter colours and the corals are awsome. I started like you with a lot of freshwater tropical tanks but i found that they were not challenging enough so bought a marine tank, and have not looked back since . Dan
  13. Hi, i havent had any expearience with that filter before but i beleive you may have just stirred up some old gunk that was stuck some where in the filter. Just give it some time and it should clear up fine. Dan
  14. Hi all, could you please tell me if i set up my new tank and i use pre established live rock from an exsisting tank do i still need to cycle, if so i take it that it would be quicker? Also a quick question about a mandarin fish- I have heard that they are pickey eaters, do they eat any common food on the market? Also one last thing, the new tank is going to be 170l so was wondering if you had any ideas for protein skimmers i should use (cheaper ones). Cheers Dan
  15. Hi, You could try using a product called 'salifert stop parisite' it should help with the white spot (and is reef safe) but other than that i believe it will just go away with time as long as all your water parameters are good. Dan
  16. Hi, I believe they are astrea snails,I got a few and will controll algea very well. Dan
  17. Hi, i will be siliconing some pipes on to my tank soon just wondering if there is a special type to use and if you have had any expearience with certain brands? Also how long should it cure for? Cheers Dan
