So how much am i looking at for a marinetank setup? (2nd hand, or cheap new) Just ballpark figures will do, as i'm curious... and im thinking 200L max Rory

We also have some Golden sand beaches, not wellington yellow but a really vibrant gold color. I can always go take some photos of the different beaches and you can just pick your sand!

Hey Dark.. ..Up here in the winterless north We have several white sand beaches (well i can think of at least one thats close by) so if you want i can scoup you up a whole lot and bring it down to welly when i return (mid jan). It won't be a problem at all!

Very cool indeed! How many are you putting in you (what size) tank? And let us know how well they work ...Could you put another layer above the wool, of gravel to hold it all togeather?

Isn't it horrable! it doesn't have a reflector over it so the lounge is coloured SNOW WHITE at night-time untill it turns off at 10. Anywise man would say, "just turn it off earlier" but then i couldn't watch my fish swim around at night! (fingers crossed that someone gets me a light for xmas :lol: )

ahh yea i think this is the answere to my question... i brought this up with a work mate of mine and he said the same thing. That a sudden change might kill them but a gradual change would not! Anyway its interesting to ponder... Rory M

ME ME ME PICK ME!!!!! I study geology starting my 3rd year next year. As for the question here, NZ is pritty safe ie (other than limestone) all our accessable natural rocks are pritty safe, do the vinigar test, other wise get a rock checked out if it shows any bright colours as these colours can be a product of some nasty things in the rock! Who ever is in the south island is lucky, you guys have all that shist, and gneiss, granite...all the cool looking stuff!

soooooooooo... ...i was just reading a thread about keeping discus; 'temperature changes of +/- 1 degree, or pHchange of 0.2 will kill them', And i just accepted this information, but after sitting around with my thoughts i began to wonder how these things survive in the wild? For example if it were dry for a long time then there was a sudden down pour that lasted for a day or two, surely the pHof the water and/or the temperature would fluctuate! And what about global warming and cooling? this has been proven to occure over several hundred year periods.... ...all this got me wondering (if the information i read is correct) how on earth did these critters slip through the net of natural selection? How did evolution favor these guys? (cause they sure arn't a very inteligent design! :lol: ) Rory

Yeah i know but it looks dull without a light, and it makes the fish hard to see without a light!

Well my tank is currently in transit (moving to welly soon) and i haven't yet bought a propper light. I'm currently builting a Kauri cabinet to hold it, inc lid. (bottom half is in photo) :lol: I'll post updates when i get the lid and cabinet finished, some plants in there, and a propper light. :lol: :lol: :bounce: :lol: :lol:

Does this look bad to you? its a 90L tank (i know im the newest newbe asking all the questions and im sorry but im a little concerned about all this) The algae seems to be eating away at the silicone. Do i need to start worrying? or is this safe as houses?

Do you think that is just terrable!? I mean we pay for these damn things and they seem to be less accurate than my damn toaster! Im sure it can't be to hard to make them accurate.. ...So where can you get good heaters with an accurate, digital thermostat? As im new to this hobby i have little knowledge as to which are the quality brands. Whats your setup? Do you guys/girls use quality thermometers and heaters or $1 rubbish ones like me? I was reading a post the other day about a blown thermostat...is there prevention for this? (listen to me i sound stressed out as! lol) Rory :-?

Hey my water felt a little hot this morning..... ....soooooooo.... I checked the budget thermometer floating around...26-27 Deg C I then checked the heater...set to 26...heater still running Still felt hotish so i got a quality food thermometer...30-31 Deg C I turned the heater right down and it went to 20 befor it turned off, i then turned up and it stayed off for a bit then turned back on (26 Deg C setting). Whats going on here? is my thermostat blown? are all the thermometers wrong? help... i don't want to boil my fish! (all the equipment is not new) Cheers Rory

quite sure they have teeth, i know this cause i have a tendance to 'run like hell' when i see them! mainly the salt water ones! Its even worse when you see a 6 foot albino! yuck!

I'm curious if there are any really good websites about keeping freshwater tropical fish? (NZ or worldwide) I've tried google, but i jjust get swamped with rubbish (as usual) www.about.com seems to be alright for looking at somethings ie species... but post any jems if you know any

Yeah thats what i thought i'd be using. However the problem for me arises when i have three wires (terminals) poking out the damn thing! How do i rig this up?
