  1. It would be awesome to see our importers get fish that are identified right down to locational variant and keep that name assigned to the fish! Personally I think that NZ is such a small market and they would post a list here and get stuff all orders especially for the rarer stuff, but I would love an importer to give it a go. Stuff for NZ is likely to be sold out before we get it because they are more likely to satisfy their big customers (like Aussie) over us.
  2. Firstly I am not expert in this, my advice would be to PM barrie (but you have already had his advice via that thread so that might not get anyway) Even if you used non acidic silicone the fact that the glass is going to be weak. Barrie suggested that with 2 3mm pieces laminated together it is only as strong as 1 3mm piece of glass, how thick are the pieces in your glass? I guess you would need to plug that into the calculator to work out your safety factor. Bracing is all well and good but it is smack bang in the middle of the front/rear pieces you need to brace so it is hard to do. An external frame might work but it would have to go right through the middle of the tank, and you would have to make it very well so it was supporting the tank but not interfering with the tank otherwise it would create pressure points, it would also be hard to make it look nice if it was for a display tank. Probably my personal opinion would be it is too dodgy in laminated glass just from what I have read here, but I have also met people with laminated glass tanks most have been smaller though.
  3. And another thread with a tank with a much higher safety factor going and having enough force to smash other tanks across the room.. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=41820
  4. Yes you are right Smidey. here is the thread where Barrie went through it all viewtopic.php?f=3&t=45392&p=493317&hilit=laminated#p493317
  5. Yeah you can make tanks that big but the glass has to be thick enough, I had some tall tanks that had 15mm thick glass. The calcs are there for a reason and glass is very unforgiving when it does go. I believe barrie said something about laminated glass being bad news in tanks as well, something about it being as weak as the thinnest piece of glass used.
  6. Unless you were willing/able to stick a brace right down the middle of the tank (ie divide the tank in half) then you would not be able to brace it any way to make it safe. I agree it would be an awesome display but unfortunately not safe to completely fill up in 12mm glass
  7. Probably best to mention in the auction that it is not safe to fill, I probably wouldn't want it on my conscience if someone was to fill it and have it burst in their lounge and have a heap of people injured or just their lounge flooded, it is a shame that people build tanks like this sometimes it would be wicked to fill up!
  8. I haven't seen any that red yet.. You can get rubescenes or ruby reds they look more like like this though.. http://media.photobucket.com/image/ruby ... pg%3Fo%3D3 Maleri reds are also a similar fish as they are all line bred variants of maleris.. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/red_peacocks.php
  9. I knew I remembered this tank lol it was the one that had the dodgy safety factor. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=47250
  10. I believe your fish has found "the pebble" it is a magical pebble that all fish have been told tales about every day from when they were hatched, it is rumoured that if the pebble is manipulated in a certain way that it will inprision all of the nasty humans into fish tanks and the fish will be able to walk the earth and run free once again. But seriously your fish is probably just digging a hole

    Skinny ram

Levamisole or fenbendizole will kill that.. I would do levamisole first, did you worm them correctly the first time and do the right amount of treatments etc? Do you feed alot of live foods from outside? Daphnia and things like that?
  12. Yeah your right probably no point in having the rubble, I will have to get some bigger pieces and start them cycling.. I do have some scattered around in African tanks but I like it in there so might have to buy some more at some stage, I just had this rubble so wondered if I could use that as well and start cycling it to get things moving. Yeah on the look out for skimmer and that sort of thing I am sure things will come together in their own time. No need to heat the bucket or bin in the fishroom the floor temp is 22-24C.
  13. lol it is very hard to tell from that low res video but they all still look very uncoloured.. I would give them more time..
  14. Yeah it is rubble, like 2-4cm pieces in a zip up mesh bag, I figured it would cycle like anything else here is a pic of it. Is this suitable? Was thinking I could stick it into a sump, but then I might not end up doing a sump lol so cycling it might have no purpose. Will be tropical marine probably just a small one I am just looking at getting the gear together as I find bits and pieces so unsure when it will eventuate.. Figured cycling the rock was the hardest/longest process so if I could get that started it might work out. Might have to pop in and say hi next time we are down and buy some bigger rock off you. I would have thought adding "live rock" to the dead rock would cycle it faster? Or is that the wrong train of thought..
  15. One day I want to setup a marine tank, I was thinking of some forward planning and going and grabbing some sea water from down at the marina and chucking some coral rubble in a bin in the fishroom (heated room) with a pump and just letting it sit there cycling (or cooking?). Will this work or do I need to add some live rock into the mix as well. The rubble I have is like this http://www.livefishonline.com.au/mercha ... mage45.jpg in a mesh type bag, would this cycle the same as the bigger chunks of coral or am I better off using the chucks of coral rock?
  16. Nice fish! Good luck with the fry/eggs.. What are you going to do if they start free swimming? Are going going to leave them with the pandas and see if the parents can guard them well enough for some to survive or siphon them?
  17. Yeah 5x2x2 in 10mm is doable with 2 average people, any bigger needs 4 and that one in 15mm glass would be that extra bit heavier, it pays to have extra people to help in case someone trips or anything like that as well.. A glass company may have the glass suckers?
  18. 4 big people or 6 medium people should do it, and try and borrow some of those glass carrying suction things.. Failing that I have heard of people showing up to their local fire stations with beer and getting some help with lifting tanks, would probably work at any industry around 4-5 on a Friday night.
  19. lol well I told you about it.,.
  20. What a wicked tank, who would have known that there was all this stuff out and about around NZ! lol now if anyone finds any of those snail shells let me know My altos would love some (without the nasty snails in them).
  21. Awesome I am yet to see a male that colourful from that strain yet the cross back to wild a few generations ago took alot of the colour out of them and plenty of people just started breeding anything (without any care to selecting the best colours) calling them reds when they didn't actually have any red on them. So you female has colour in her tail too? Do you have any pics? I have some that are 4th generation from the cross back to wild now, line bred for the the red unfortunately my best female only had one spawn but I still have her babies so hope to get some good colour and nice red babies if I can grow them out and breed them.
  22. Good work on the spawns Are the cockatoos those orange ones from the stores, like what Mt Roskill has ATM? lol and there isn't much breeding in my room... Yet.. Hopefully things start soon especially with the dwarfs
  23. Yeah it was good to meet everyone I hope the rest of the tank crawl went well!
  24. Would panda cories not be small enough for adult angels to eat?
  25. I would stick with at least 12-20 dems and maybe half as many yellows.
