  1. I agree they are nice looking fish maybe you do need to change to a pellet based food, maybe some colour bits and/or NLS?
  2. Discus need good water and good food and to be worm free to grow.. Most discus breeders keep their fish in bare bottomed tanks (easy to remove waste so the water quality stays good) and do large water changes daily or every few days. Good food is a no brainer if you don't feed good food then you wont get good growth. Worms and stuff are a difficult one I know that most discus breeders regualarly worm their fish using a mixture of drugs because discus are quite susceptable to worms again it is hard to know when to do it or how much is too much. If you got the fish off someone who doesn't know what they were doing chances are the fish could already be stunted (typical picture of the tiny discus in petshops with the massive eyes and pinched in foreheads). Discus are relatively easy to keep alive but difficult to get them to achieve their max size/colour.
  3. lol $800 a fish maybe.. HFF would be asking suppliers to order then in, they are not importers
  4. You can do it this way too.. And click to make it bigger so people can actually see it Just click on "share" by each pic and then "get IMG code" and copy/paste the clickable one for forums.
  5. Unsure what pic you wanted to share but you will need to make the clickable to post them here or resize them.. There are plenty here.. http://s1182.photobucket.com/albums/x44 ... %20taNKS2/
  6. Yeah no doubt they were imported as julis but overseas they were renamed or incorrectly id'd and given that name, articles and forums I have read suggest this may be done on purpose because the julis are more desirable, but that is neither here nor there they are nice fish
  7. Trilineatus = false juli cory. Most are called juli cories because julies are more desirable.. There is plenty of info on the net on them Anyway nice bunch of fish going in there though.. Are you planning on doing heaps of water changes to grow the discus out?
  8. You can also use alders cones I just chucked a few in my apisto tanks, only 2-3 in each 40-60L tank and overnight it turned the water a nice brown colour, hopefully it helps with spawning too, it is supposed to be very antibacterial so can help with fungus on eggs etc. http://www.aldercones.com/
  9. This is the best way to do it... You could even run siphon based overflows between each tank, I have done this and it worked but has its risks.
  10. I got mine today thanks Caryl I haven't even opened it and already I am loving it lol
  11. Obviously it would also depend on the quality and colour of the guppies, but ultimately it would depend on if someone really wanted them or if 2-3 people really wanted them.
  12. I have some too, they probably aren't worth much maybe $10-20 but depends if you can find someone who wants them and if they are breeding and throwing the trait etc..
  13. I heard he carried the stands as well?
  14. Good score, should be an awesome tank in 15mm glass too, bloody heavy though but really strong.. lol I told you there would be plenty of people happy to help if you offered beers, they work wonders
  15. Awesome thanks Suphew I will source some coral rock and get it ticking over, I didn't realise that it would have been contaminated from being in fresh water I would used the odd random meds in there and got most of it "second hand" out of other fresh water tanks so probably not worth the risk.
  16. There is still no reason why you couldn't ask, you can ask for anything in life just don't be offended if you get told where to go.. lol I agree it is very likely, but I have heard of it happening in the past.
  17. If your lucky.. Hopefully not, "pear shaped, flooded room and maimed/dying people/children"
  18. lol I am a purist But if nature has decided to mix populations possibly because of a species extinction or whatever reason then so be it, I wonder if they will rename the new hybrids a new species? A very interesting thing to talk about that's for sure..
  19. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/environment/n ... d=10689619 Something interesting to discuss
  20. I have heard of people hiring quarantine tanks before not in recent times though, again the phone book is in front of you there are plenty of importers ring them and see what you can arrange but I would put aside at least $1k maybe more if things go wrong.
  21. No reason why you cannot contact an importer and ask to hire a few quarantine tanks and get them quarantine some fish on your behalf..
  22. If only it was that easy, I am very much an optimist when it comes to these things and I would love to see things come into the country but I have been around long enough to know how things work. It is all about $$'s in the end, an importer would rather import 10000 neons they can get through quarantine and actually sell because they are bread and butter fish than import things that are more expensive and a higher risk. You also have to realise that in todays climate a higher risk fish (which may die of natural causes) can cost an importer big time in testing fees, extended quarantine times and maybe even an entire shipment destroyed. So it is not just these importers being tight over a few $$'s it is there livelihood and alot of money. From what I have heard about people ordering special fish they actually chew up alot of the importers time ringing and making special demands they have to justify a new tank for them and take the risk etc, again it would make better business sense to be boring and bring in some more neons. You also have to realise that alot of the overseas suppliers that deal with NZ probably don't have alot of descent fish on their lists just the more common and cheaper bread and butter fish so potentially the wholesaler might have to deal with a whole new supplier if they wanted to get different stuff in. Just my 2c worth I would love to hear from someone in the industry about their opinion on this. My belief is there would be alot of people throwing species around but when it came to deposits coming though there would be a great disappearing act. Edit - Alanmin posted a few things before me but I can't be bothered rewriting mine instead
  23. It would be worth asking if HFF wanted to request some more fish in through their suppliers no doubt they already do to some degree if there are fish they are after for the store or that they think will sell well. I know there were some issues with the last import lot in that they struggled to sell all of what people indicated they wanted (guess that is to be expected when you just post on the net and don't take deposits or anything). I think it would be difficult when ordering fish direct for customers when there are deposits etc already paid what happens if the fish die in quarantine etc? The importer would would probably refund the deposit if it is non refundable you will have someone who has paid a substantial amount of money and hasn't got any fish so it is that risk again. Alot of the fish we want importers wont touch are expensive and harder to get through quarantin, things like cichlids are likely to smack each other up especially in the bare minimum tanks they are kept in during their quarantine period.
  24. The importers have to be careful because they supply the shops and if they start ordering direct and bypassing the stores then the stores will get upset because it isn't really fair. Someone like redwoods who is a direct importer and retailer is more willing/able to entertain special requests but alot of them are high risk fish and sometimes it would become more hassle that it is worth. HFF asked for suggestions of what fish people would like to see in a thread on here a while back and then asked one of their importers to import some of them some of which came into the country and made it into stores all over the place.
