  1. I would definitely look at putting some $$'s into getting a bigger tank if you already have 9 in a 224L tank, you risk stunting and ruining them.. As for a tank 120cm tall tank, not only does it not really achieve anything in terms of stocking (doesn't increase surface area) but it would cost you thousands because you would need 15mm glass which is very expensive. I suggest you find somewhere you can put a 5-6ft tank with the number of discus you have you should really be looking at a 4-500L tank minimum. Are you doing lots of water changes etc on the tank?
  2. It is hard to remove and like others have said actually etches into the glass, something like what living art suggests would be good a really fine polish or something like that.. I use scotch brite and glass cleaner on my lids that get it, but it does scratch it (hence why I only did that on lids).
  3. lol all I was meaning is there isn't much point in spending the hours it would take to remove the bracing when it would be covered by gravel and the tank wasn't worth much to justify that amount of time/energy spent on it As you have said it was free so I would spend as little time/money on it and get it up and running for a breeding tank. If you need some glass I probably have a few pieces that are the right size already lying around you can have.
  4. An aqua one 90 x 50cm tall x 40cm wide in 10mm glass with rounded corners went for $70 on trademe last night
  5. I was meaning replacement second hand price..
  6. If the braces are siliconed down then it is more hassle than it is worth trying to get them off, but (unless the person who made the tank was really slack) you would assume that they didn't make it with bugs and stuff underneath so maybe there is a gap you can work it out.. But yeah I agree with Diver it is probably more work than it is worth when it will be hidden by gravel and the tank is not worth alot to replace.
  7. I have 30-40 tanks and only have a small bottle of the stuff I have had for ages, I would probably look at other ways of doing it too, if you are just hatching eggs then stick them into a smaller tank so you use less of it..
  8. Yeah easy to patch, I would stick a triangle or square over it, cut all the silcone away first though so it fits nicely into the corner. Another concern with patching cracks is to make sure they are complete so they don't spread when water is put in the tank, yours likes like it has done all it will do so should be fine.
  9. The pandas will have a go at eating the fry at night because the female will move them into a pit.. But they might be ok. If the fry are in an established tank with lots of plants etc then just keep feed them as normal crush up some flake and they should be able to find enough to nibble on and keep alive. Sure they will go better with the brineshrimp or microworms but most seem to go ok in planted tanks.
  10. You could do a wicked tang tank in that 6fter You would have to do tropheus and shellies, in a tank that size you could also do some jullies or maybe brichardi. But in a mixed tank I don't fancy your chances of having large numbers of fry survive, it is probable that some of the substrate spawners will get free swimming fry which you might be able to siphon out, and tropheus would hold and you could catch and strip them.
  11. Awesome once they pop they wont stop I take mine away from the parents because they are in a mixed tropheus tank and the tropheus will eat them all, but recently have stopped taking the fry because they are just too prolific and I have had quite a few fry surviving so they are good parents. People with them in species tanks leave them with the parents I believe. As for food they eat anything
  12. I think I was watching that auction too, it went for a good price well done If you are interested in africans feel free to come out and have a look I have all sorts setup out here, even breeding shellies so plenty of options and ideas lol you could even do a nice hap tank in the 6fter and shellies in the 3fter
  13. Bird barn have one on display take him for a drive there
  14. lol well there is no need to scrub ornaments and vacuum gravel, filters get cleaned out every 6-12months but water gets cleaned weekly or twice weekly that is what keeps the fish alive and healthy Why are you using buckets? Do you not have a hose?
  15. It is very hard to tell, and the guppy virus/disease thing is only a theory, but it does seem to fit an awful lot of cases so I am beginning to wonder.
  16. Which is why I suggested guppy virus, it is possible all the fish that are surviving are carriers of it and immune so they are fine, the ones that aren't carriers or immune are dead.
  17. I would still be inclined to ditch the pair of apistos maybe just get a male cockatoo/agassizi or a single male/female krib for a show fish that way they can't beat each other up or breed and beat all the other fish up. It will be too much stress for you having a pair in your only tank.
  18. lol I wouldn't go that far.. I have most of the smaller tanks on an overflow water change system which I turn on a few times a week and overflow them to change the water this takes most the work out of it, the others are mostly big tanks so I just drain and fill them with a hose I can probably change all my tanks water in 1 hour if I was in a hurry and didn't do any other maintenance.

lol I think you need to do plenty of research and look at tons of peoples tanks and make up your mind..

Which african tank? I have plenty of them running.. Best bet is to google "african cichlid tank" or african tank or something like that and look at all the images that pop up.. Link us to a tank you like and we can go from there..
  21. I have heard all sorts of things related to guppies and different water but at the end of the day it is a guppy and should thrive in any water but the very extreme. Sounds like your tank is cycled also. I would put it down to some sort of virus or bacterial infection, do tons of research and see what you can come up with
  22. Try whatever you like but unless you determine if it is a virus or bacterial or just a random bug or whatever you wont have any luck treating it.
  23. Possilby could be the guppy virus/disease.. Some fish carry it some don't you will find out which ones are succeptable to it when you stick them in the same tank and one lot gets wiped out.
  24. Yeah a 200L tank should be fine to build up fish stocks slowly in, there is so much water any waste will be diluted and take ages to reach a dangerous level. Agreed with Caryl, filter media is what you are after the water isn't much good to you and is a pain to transport. I regularly setup new tanks with 100% new water an established filter and a full stocking level with no issues. If you tell him his hair is messy he might spend a few hours looking in the mirror and you can take whatever you want..
  25. Good reason for running a reverse under gravel and using another filter to pick the crud up
