I don't know what any of them are.. There were alot more tanks than what I posted or got pictures of most of them didn't turn out or I didn't want to look like a freak taking photo's of every tank. The tanks were huge so big that you just sit there and get lost in them looking at all the different corals and fish and everything. I was trying to talk to the people who run the place to try and get more info on size of tanks and how they light them water changes etc but they all spoke french so was difficult..
-
Oh and forgot to add congrats on your stripping markLB What were you stripping was it your sunshines?
-
Yeah the main benefit is the female doesn't get too run down.. Other benefits are if you can leave her in the tank remove her for stripping then stick her straight back in she doesn't loose her place in the tank so less aggression on her. Also sometimes they tend to hold too long and when they finally let go the fry are half starved so good to get them out and eating when they are first ready to.
-
Yeah as I suspected a demasoni.. People tend to make up names for things when they forget them, but its quite easy to figure it out when you look at what has been imported and what is commonly avaliable.. Demasoni aren't aggressive to other fish just to other demasoni With names of fish and stuff it is best to keep second opinions or look around at descent sites to confirm them as some people make up names or get confused..
-
Cheers for the tip I will be doing this eventually to my tank and have been putting alot of thought into how to do it
-
Awesome cheers gilly I first looked through here and couldn't find it.. I wonder why its not on there? http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/r ... ?genus=167 I wonder if they have later been reclassified as something else? Yet they have mentioned it in the demasoni article.. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/p_demasoni.php Hopefully funnyman can post some pics and shed some light on it
-
Cheers for that gilly.. Does look like elongatus.. funnyman are you able to post a photo at all? Would like to see some pics of this fish and try to figure out what it is
-
ah found it now I suspect that you have demasoni because I am not aware that we have minutus in nz but I know that demasoni are here.. This article talks about how the 2 are often crossed and confused they seem to be basically the same fish.. http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/c ... ichlid.php

Isn't the fibreglass resin and stuff really expensive especially considering the area's you would have to cover? Even second hand you should be able to pick up a 5x2x2 (540L) for $100-200? Have seen 6fter's go for around this? Have you asked around the petshop's for prices? Or contacted Peter at port nickolson glass in Welly.. Obviously if you just want a project then it would be wicked
-
Hmm still stuck on the minutus sounds like a made up name to me.. is this what it looks like? http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/s ... php?id=849 Your tank is relatively big you might get away with it.. How are they aggression wise at the moment? Sexing them is easy male ice blues look like this http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/s ... php?id=794 females are brown in colour (check photo's on profile for females) Red zebs males are usually pinker females more orange males will have less more obvious egg spots. Powder blues can be hard usually sexed by body shape and behaviour.

Yeah I agree, that some person in the first one (who if they are on here its great maybe they could enter into the discussion) has a pair of transcriptus listed as marlieri because someone told them they were.. Obviously without doing any research because the picture on the auction is of a transcriptus and marlieri are a little harder to find.. Again going to create confusion down the line when they're being sold. I don't believe this person is trying to trick anyone or do anything dodgy just that they might not have the knowledge or have done the reserach. It is just going to create confusion down the line and points out why you should always buy of people who know what they're doing and have pride/passion for it. When I buy a fish off someone no matter who I always research what it was supposed to be and I watch it as it matures and make sure that is indeed what it is.. And that is off trusted and respectable internet sites not the ones that allow anyone to submit a random photo and a name and it gets posted. I suspect that the exporters who sold the fish to the nz wholesalers attached the "firebird" name to the fish to make it more marketable.. Everyone wants to get hold of awesome bright red peacocks.

Best to post this in the cichlid section What are the dimentions of your 3ft tank? Unless your tank is massive you're already running a risk with your current stocking level. The zebra's aren't really suitable for the tank size, are they males or females? Generally I don't recommend zebra's (red zeb, ice blue and powder blue) for anything smaller than 4ft tanks and ice blue males are known to dominate even 5-6ft tanks but if you had only female zebra's it might be alright. Electra's also get quite big and are open water hap's so might prefer more space but should be ok aggression wise, yellows are sweet in a 3ft, are they all young fish? Also what is a minutus? In saying that you might be one of the lucky ones that gets away with this stocking list but I can't see it being harmony for the fish once one of your big zebra's gets big, matures and starts throwing himself around.

I went to the "Aquarium des lagons" in new caledonia a while ago and took a heap of pics with the intention of sharing them here I have finally got around to it.. Alot of the pics are pretty crappy but this place was amazing with huge tanks huge fish and corals etc hundreds of tanks.. Various smaller tanks.. Cool rockpool on the way in Some random fish Nautiles Some of the big tanks I hope someone enjoys them
-
Cool is the tank going well? I have replied to your pm about fish A bit difficult to get non-aggressive cichlids most of them at the very least are a bit stroppy.. Jewels are cool fish very pretty and easy to keep, but also very aggressive and if your unlucky enough to get a pair they will dominate your tank and you will struggle to give away any babies.. A bit like convicts which you seem to enjoy so maybe jewels would be cool for you.. In a 350L tank you could make a very nice african cichlid tank, however they are considered aggressive, they will get along with their own type though..
-
Thats awesome good story
-
Yeah could be that.. lol some people just aren't that into it and buy fish because they're pretty then they breed and they've forgotten what they actually where so have to get inventive when reselling them
-
I was pretty confident they come through with Rubescenes on the list.. It seems the firebird common name has been used in alot of places if I had my way peacocks would only be sold with sc names but that would never happen.. You can take pretty much any common name google it and find links where it relates to several different species, which one is right or wrong? Luckily we got our firebirds in with an actual name as well Livingart you are right we can only do the best with what we have some people (I think mainly from lack of knowledge) seem to be taking us backwards without knowing it.. Someone will buy one firebird auction (the one with the jacob's as pictured) and resell them as jacob's.. Someone else will buy the other firebird auction and resell them as baenshi, this is how confusion is created.
-
lol yeah I saw them.. One of them has a photo of a jacob's in the auction, and the other is calling them baenshi.. Who knows what they are but my best guess would have been firebird's were Rubescens? I thought they were actually imported and on the list with this name? Probably not a good idea to buy from either given the mix ups and that neither of them have photo's of the actual fish on their auctions.. You wouldn't know what you were going to get. That is the problem with common names, I think also people see something on tradme or their mates tanks and decide it is what they have also and call their fish that.. Or google the common name which will pop up for many different species that people have posted with no knowledge, this is what people do when trying to sell fish on trademe and pick the best one not even knowing what it is..
-
Hi and welcome seems to be quite a few people popping up in Palmy recently which is sweet.. What cichlids did you want for your 350L tank?
-
Awesome news Nav, this is a big surprise for me because I missed the post about them spawning Good work glad to see all the effort you've put into getting these fish has paid off..
-
Another good one http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 549658.htm female peacock being sold as a male bumblebee If I could log onto trademe over here I would go on and try and correct them..
-
Congrats on the spawning.. I spawned these a few times before i went overseas the first time I removed all the community fish and let the parents go for it but the male ate most of the babies. The second time I removed the mum and cave into a 1ft tank filled with the tank water and let her look after them in there for a few week's. I spawned them in little terrocota pots my mum made for me 10 years ago when I first bred them around the same size as a film canaster (I used these too). The female stays in the pot so its easy to remove the eggs and her at the same time. I have never had the female eat a spawn from this happening. I am not a fan of the egg yoke for fry its just so easy to overfeed and pollute the tank, I find nova baby a good powdered food just use a little once they're fully free swimming, or just green water until they can eat brineshrimp. Good luck what strain of cockatoo's did you get?
-
Sorry to hear about your clown's.. I haven't seen any of the recent shipments but before I went overseas the state of the clown loaches in the shops was very poor (not the shop's fault they can only deal in what they get). Have you considered that the fish were sad or sick before you got them? What were the fishes symptoms before they died?
-
Are my cichlids just not that into each other?
ryanjury replied to tinytawnykitten's topic in Cichlids
lol its all technique for you and the fish Don't stress it you need to learn how much to open their mouths and if you open their mouth and dunk them in and out of the water it washes the babies out, should only take 1-2 goes to get them all once you're good at it I think it feels mean too but am happy to do it so the fish don't get as run down holding forever and potentially get wasted by the males.. Yes you can remove them but then you have trouble when you reintroduce them 6 of 1 half dozen of another I guess. Good luck with the babies, was the one you got out fully free swimming? -
lol thats awesome Where did you get all of them from? Did you get normal or balloon ram's? And any pic's of the cockatoo's?
