  1. Yeah I looked up the profile before posting to have a look see They just reminded me of chilumba the way they are colouring up but obvious differences especially the females.. Glad chilumbas are going well and have been spread around might have to get some when you do eventually advertise them.. They do look good as long as none have popped out random shapes. Aprof, I don't think that Alex or firenzenz would be gullible enough to jump on any of those "blue peacock" wild goose chases, if Alex got them from wherever he did then they must be a good source I know he doesn't go for anything that could be dodgy..
  2. Nice looking fish good shape and all kinda remind me of the chilumba's.. May I ask where you managed to get them from? Oh and how was your chilumba breeding program going? Good to see new fish being restored in NZ
  3. I cut up plywood into little squares roughly 20-30mm square and put a long nail through the middle the wood stops the nail just going straight through the poly.. Its hori but it works
  4. Yeah finding quality africans is pretty hard in the shops.. I can't blame them really especially the palmy stores they don't sell many so why bother stocking the higher quality more expensive ones? And if they don't sell many they don't really have the knowledge.. The pet shops there are good and as long as you know who to talk to you get good info. I should have jullies when I get home I left a few babies who knows what is left now.. I wonder where wetpets got theres from and if they're transcriptors or marlieri? I think the fish you're talking about are kribs kinda randomly just chucked in that tank and they were doing well might be getting rid of the pair actually as they don't really do it for me.. edit: just noticed there are cheap pairs of kribs in wanganui on trademe
  5. I don't know much about sumps but that is what your making.. The volumes of everything will depend on how big your tank is your wanting to filter.. I think you just want to use standard pvc piping again size depends on flow.. Are you planning on using 2 pumps? One out of the tank and one into the tank? This probably wouldn't be a good idea as you would have to make the flows of the 2 pumps the same otherwise something will overflow (ie too much in the sump if tank pump is too slow.. Best to use an overflow tank (ie pump heaps of water into the tank and overflow the excess into the sump.. Also unless your filtering a tiny tank a 1000LPH return pump would be pretty crappy at 1-2m head it will slow to around 600LPH if your doing a sump then get something grunty and make it kick ass..
  6. See this thread a little way down this page.. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/proble ... 34284.html To summise the firebirds were imported as Peacock Rubescenes/Firebird so Al. Rubescenes would be more likely to be what they are.. Could be some confusion though and with a photo off the net not of actual fish and confusion with names I would be concerned..
  7. I think you'll be fine to add fish.. You could probably buy crap and chuck chemicals at it, but I always think the best way to get rid of it is to find the cause and change it. In your case I think there are too many nutrients in the water stick some plants in to use them and maybe cut back on light it wont harm the fish. With my tank I just kept feeding until I ran out of crap food and the green just went away, the fish didn't care it just looked ugly..
  8. Dont know about the cyano.. But if your tank is going green it will be as everyone has pointed out you have added a substrate full of stuff thats good for plants to grow in but you have no plants (apart for algae growing in the water). Have you been leaving the light on? I would probably chuck a heap of plants in and some starter fish get it going. I had massive green water (like you would stick it in a bag and think it was lime juice) due to super high phosphates (caused by crap food) and the fish were all fine breeding etc they don't seem to care..
  9. Anything is possible.. I don't think they're overly aggressive however they have been known to eat other fishes eyes out.. I know your other fish are going to be big enough not to be a mouthful, my main concern would be are they fast enough to get away from an adult comp without being harmed if one does get cranky?
  10. Max captive size is 25-30cm's I have seen a male that big but he was very old.. I guess you could slowly adjust them to any water conditions don't know how well they would do but most fish are quite hardy.. What were you planning on keeping them with? Are they aprof's ones you're talking about?
  11. http://www.fishforums.com/forum/breedin ... -fish.html Photos of fry.. http://www.gnsaquarium.com.au/html/bgk.html I think it can be done, id say the first problem would be finding a adult male and female that get along to try with, second problem probably finding the right sized tank.. Is it something your considering? Would be cool to see.. Hormones are a must in any fish breeding what else would trigger the fish to breed?
  12. Crap that sucks sorry to hear about that nothing worse than a flooded house.. Think on the bright side though at least you got there in time to save the fish! And there are people out there with spare tanks (I also have a whole fishroom full if you need one).. How did the speaker break the tank?
  13. I think your red zeb's you might have got from that auction are females? Will have to have a look and see.. I have no spare females, you will find spare females quite hard to come by because african cichlids get on better with 1m to many females so best to hang onto as many as you can to keep things in harmony.. I will have to see what dolphins I have left the photo's are of big ones my breeders which are 2-3years old (at a guess) I will have babies for sale unsure of size maybe 2-3cm's for around $6.. They don't go blue until around 5cm's either they're silver until then.. Can't guarantee whats left because its been a while but last time I saw a pic of the grow out tank there were heaps.. The other fish is a fryeri (sometimes called electric blue hap). The big tank in wetpets has some similair but I think they're crosses. Will let you know when I am home and settled back in, have you seen the post in the clubs section about a palmy meet and greet?
  14. Hey I might be keen.. Am back in the country in a few weeks, however will have been away from family for almost 4 months so can't skip straight out to do fish stuff lol Maybe a weekend during the day thing my wife and daughter can also come to would suit? Don't make any special arrangements for me though just an idea Looks like there is some new people around it is always good to meet new fish people..
  15. Yeah man the yanks are soo luck with what they can get in seems they can get everything... And also the rare wild caught stuff seems to be cheaper than what the common stuff they wouldn't even bother keeping is here..
  16. Sorry tripple post internet crapped out.. What a nube..
  17. Sorry double post internet crapped out..
  18. Why not use NLS growth formula? NLS has a good rep around the world.. A variety of high quality food and lots of water changes will get the best growth results...
  19. The zebra's are very aggressive they are known for that and the males will all scrap amonst each other to establish who is the boss of the tank, as long as you have heaps of males or one male it will be fine.. Convicts should be ok in there might be trouble if breeding but yeah I don't recommend it (mainly because I don't like convicts but also because they're american) but have seen it work.. I would be keen to have a look see and your yellows see if you have a spare descent male im sure I will have something different spare to swap if they're any good You're yellows should breed true, however red zeb x yellow is a very common cross it depends on how dominant your yellows are.. Red zebra males are typically a pink colour females orange.. However that is only in the "pure strain" that I have seen around if they are crossed who knows what will happen here is a pic of my male and 2 of his girls.. Male on the right.. People do call them orange zebra's too but red zeb is the most used common name even though they're orange.. Pics would be good if you can get some, if you want you can come out and see my fish sometime when im back in NZ? I don't work on any hard and fast rule for number of fish per X litres I just work on what works and what looks good.. How is the filtration in your tank? Its basically the same size as the tank of mine and I have a heap of fish in there but very good filtration.. The light blue bright fish might be dolphins did they look like this? Or this? All things going well I should have some dolphins for sale when im back.. Lionheads are ok with your mix, how big are they? If they're old enough to sex then they should be ok.. Diet should be mostly vege based food, spirilina flake etc. I don't know the food you're using but if its rift algae sticks should be fine. I think my wife has switched mine onto that while ive been away and says it brings out their colour more etc. Variety is good I make up frozen food or feed cooked pea's etc occasionally. Main thing is because your keeping mbuna stick with vege based food and not high protein foods bloodworms etc..
  20. Most of wetpets zebras come from their mixed zebra tank and are a muddle up.. However they have got in batches off the wholesale list etc so some might be ok hard to tell.. Really important to buy from someone who knows what they're doing if you want to be able to name properlly.. That auction ended up being quite a good buy if only for the yellows I was tempted to try and get one male off them because im after one if they're any good let me know might be able to trade some fish Will happily id them for you if you can get pic's will also be home in a few weeks.. Glad someone else locally is keeping africans Oh you do realise that convicts aren't africans as the lady was selling them as such on the auction.. How big is your tank?
  21. Where did all of them come from? 1 OB or marble zebra possible female 2 hard to tell with flash but probably blue zebra 3 red zebra possible male 4 no idea 5 possible ob or marble zebra but hard angle to tell? All these fish can and will cross breed and may well be the result of that depends where you got them from
  22. Congrats on breeding them Hope to see more of them around then, good info too im not really up on the play and have always called them straight old brown haps..

    Pleco

Pleco's are fine with the africans the only problem I have with them and the reason I don't keep them is they make soo much mess.. I stick with the standard bristlenoses whatever floats your boat..
  24. Maybe Johannes Have you kept tropheus before?
