  1. Hi and welcome we can do with more local memebers seem to have been a boom recently Can't help with any of the fish that you are after at the moment I do have some awesome blue tux guppies that I hope will start dropping fry in the future..
  2. Baenshi are here but they are more orange than yellow.. There are a few strains of stuartgranti but red shoulders are around in NZ.. Protomelas taeniolatus (red empress) are here and relatively common now, Protomelas spilonotus aren't as far as im aware. Copadichromis trimaculatus aren't here but Copadichromis borleyi (red Kadango) are. Pseudotropheus solusi aren't here but socolofi are. Metraclime estherae, Cynotilapia afra, Labidochromis caerulus and S. Fryeri (electric blue) are all here but in varying qualities.. Be careful your not just buying hybrid zebras when your buying afra, and look for descent quality fryeri/yellows. I might have a few afra spare if you wanted some of them. Are you aware that most of these fish will cross breed? You will only be able to keep one species of peacock (and they may or may not be dominated by the mbuna). You should aim for at least a large 4ft some of the haps will outgrow it maybe some of the mbuna too. Lots of photos of my fish that include a few of what you have asked for here.. http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f183/ryanjury/
  3. Yeah there are a few good tank builders up there that will build for a reasonable price.. Also watch out on trademe as bargains go on there all the time.. You were very lucky where you came from.. Seems NZ gets sent a poor selection of africans, however there are a few breeders who have managed to breed descent fish and also make the right decisions regarding breeding and keeping things pure etc.. A few usernames for you on here that are in Auckland. Johannes (not much help for malawi's at the moment but he may still have a few left) Tropheus Failing that keep an eye out on trademe.. But be very careful there are some dodgy dealers out there make sure you post on here and ask for advice on it. Do you have any specific fish you are after? mbuna/haps/peacocks or a mix? And what size tank were you thinking of doing..
  4. Some people will say boil it and all sorts of other things.. But as long as its clean and not painted I just use them and have never had a problem.
  5. I used to get them in Auckland from this lake I can't remember where but they were pretty big upto an inch or so and chuck them into the african tanks they loved it and I never had any problems.. My wife is bound to remember where it was if you want the place
  6. Thanks I got wrigglers from the last batch and one fry free swimming which disappeared (female must have eaten it).. I wouldn't stick 2f and 1m in a 30L tank the first female to spawn will team up with the male and smash the crap out of the remaining female.. It may work in a bigger tank as they're supposed to be harem spawners but I haven't had much luck with that..
  7. lol Tracy had first dibs and im too far away anyway I can get plenty where I am when I need them.. It is only a matter of time before all the pairs that have been sold spawn and these are common so im sure you will find some..
  8. lol ill have your female My pair layed again today tons of eggs hopefully things go better this time Has anyone got any free swimming?

    Discus tankmates

Yeah kribs can be a bit agro, watch they don't stress the discus out.. I am not experienced with discus but have seen alot of people say not to get 3 of them because the biggest one may beat up the smaller 2 stressing them heavily best to get 4-5 of them so aggression is spread out and smaller ones will do well.
  10. lol the bushing is plastic, it is not like a 404 which has the rubber piece that pushes firmly into the hole in the bottom.. It has a large hole which somehow a rubber o ring and plastic piece fit into. I am sure someone who owns an FX5 will be able to help, the main problem is I brought it second hand and I am unsure if I have been sticking it together right from the beginning.. Manual is useless There is no hurry now as I dropped the impeller and broke it so had to setup a couple of spare filters transfer all media etc and order a new one in
  11. Thats crap Why on earth would someone steal christmas stuff? Its not even worth anything..
  12. Hi all I have an FX5 that has started to rattle so I took it all apart for a clean when taking the motor assembly apart and taking the impeller out the bushing at the bottom fell out and I cant remember what way it goes together... Does the tapered bit go towards the impellor or towards the bottom of the housing? Manual only says to make sure you put it together right but not way right is.. And google search is no good either.. Also does the o ring for the bushing go over the bushing or inbetween the bushing and the bottom of the impeller?
  13. That does sound like a very hard way to do it.. I just stick it all together like im going to run the filter with the filter empty of water.. Then take the outlet lower than the tank open all taps and suck on the outlet pipe (if there is any water in the filter it will backwash any crap out of the filter into your mouth lol). You want to start a syphon through the filter this will fill up the fitler and all pipes you will know when its full because the water will rush constantly out of the outlet (hold it over a bucket) shake it around a bit while syphoning to make sure all the air is out.. Alternatively you can fill the filter as much as you can with the top off using a syphon hose and then tilt it to get it running, while its running shake it around a bit and play around with it until all the air is expelled into the tank.
  14. Would you like fries with that? lol The fry will be ready to be realeased at around 3weeks but sometimes the mums hold onto them for a month or so, it depends if you know when they actually spawned.. ktttk you are very lucky, the 2 times I removed females after stripping for recovery I put them back into the tank rearranged all rocks and did a water change then turned off lights.. Both of them got killed within 2 days. I guess it is all on the dynamics of the actual tank and temperment of the fish etc? Also I have stripped quite a few fish and still find demasoni difficult and daunting, it is hard to know how to hold the fish how much pressure and technique etc.. Usually I say its easy but they're friggen tiny little guys.
  15. I don't think they need salt have heard they appreciate it but haven't added any to my tanks however I can't say im very successful as I only have 1 male left Tank size woudl be around 2ft probably as little as a 1ft for a single female, you can seperate the mum with something the fry can get through or plant out the tank so she cant find and eat them..
  16. lol I would think with a fishtank being filled with water and sitting on top of it the odds of it getting wet are quite high? IMO build something good strong and water resistant do it once and do it right.. At least then if you do have an accident then you know it will be fine and not swell up and fall to bits.
  17. I successfully keep bristlenoses with all of my africans I would stick them in with 7cm africans at around 3cms and have no problems.. My adult pair spawn in my display tank all the time and there are some pretty big fish in there so they must be happy. I would say probably say no to your situation because oscars can get pretty big and also have big mouths. However I have never kept oscars before maybe someone who has will be able to help.
  18. The stand for my 5 x 2 x 2ft tank is made from MDF.. It is made from 20mm and was made by one of the reputable shops in Auckland. I don't like the design of it however it is basically just a box with no bracing etc and no actual timber. Plus the fact I overflowed my tank all over it and it all swelled up and is now ruined. I have started making a new stand for it which is 4 x 2 framing and going to be clad in rimu t & g which I found cheap on trademe. If I was you and I was building a stand I would think twice about MDF or at the very least seal it if it was the only material you could use or you were getting it free.. To me there is no point in going through all the work of building one and not doing it well enough so that it can survive getting wet and go the distance.

    Sick Fish?

Lamassol, metro and prazi are all used for worming but it depends what worms your trying to treat for.. And things like metro you need to dose daily with water changes as it isn't active in water long..
  20. She will spit in the tank regardless of the other fish its nature and what fish do.. Breeding nets are avaliable however like lmsmith said they will try and suck the fry out of the net and kill them in the process.. You could try a sold plastic one? But I am unsure if the female will loose her place in the colony by being stuck in one of them probably not..
  21. I agree, the hassle of hatching and then seperating all the brine shrimp out vs how much you will actually freeze make it not worth it.. I have just brought 500gms of de cap and it will last me a long time probably in the region of years and that is running quite a few baby tanks..
  22. Meth blue is mainly for fungus type things and I wouldn't add it to any tank that I like as it stains everything.. I have no idea what is wrong with your fish though keep the water good and keep an eye on it and see what happens I guess?

    Dwarf flags

Why would you add salt? I don't think that dwarf flags are brackish fish at all...
  24. Bolivs angels and silvers will be ok, silver dollars are schooling fish you need a few of them and they get big I think they would quickly outgrow a 4ft tank however I have never kept them so maybe someone else can help there. Demasoni are little pussies to any other fish they are only aggressive to their own type and in a large group this is minimised a male empess will be way bigger than any dem.
