Probably just freaking out, they do this sometimes when going from tanks with gravel into bare bottomed tanks.. I have started painting the bottoms of my bare bottom tanks black to try and minimise this..

Without a temp controller most heaters should maintain tank temp within a few degrees at all times (assuming normal range of outside temperatures and correct sized heater for tank). What brands do you have running? I have a jebo that does that, I set it to around 26 it keeps it stable at that for a while sometimes goes upto 29 for a while then sometimes down to 22.. I would recommend a jager or fluval heater, aqua ones seem to be alright as well..

Yeah it was a good catch up that's for sure Big thanks to Sandy for arranging it all.. Think there were around 10-12 people there? I think that this stage we are going to meet up monthly and see what happens with numbers interest etc as time goes on..

Is this it? link removed - wok

I find it hard to believe there is nothing here link Removed - wok that would work there are knock offs of everything.. Another option might be to search for a broken one on there that might work with the cable? Good luck I hate loosing stuff like that

It is hard to id any fish especially when photos of younger uncoloured fish are shown, and I feel the way they have gone about their id and muddled up names said 2 species are the same in a different language etc makes these ones a bit dodgy, especially when Mark is going to breed some far better ones you will know what they are in Chch. I wouldn't be put off all trademe auctions, some of the best breeders in NZ have and do sell fish on trademe at times you just have to pick and choose and ask advice which is what you have done

You can setup an awesome african tank with 280L You could do a nice tank with dems/yellows as your smaller colourful fish, and a bunch of male peacocks for some larger colour, it would look awesome.. Or if breeding was your thing cut back to a larger colony of one type of peacock.. Really depends what you like from what you have seen. I know of people who have used pumice straight from taupo and had no problems, but I guess the potential is there for it to have stuff in it like everything we stick in our tanks. I think she got it to sink by boiling it and sticking it straight in her tanks hot and it soaked up the water and sunk. Acclimatizing can easily be done gradually in a bucket over a period of hours to upto a day just changing small amounts of water every so often.. I regularly take my bristlenoses from the african tanks (PH 8+) into the dwarf cichlid tanks (PH 6.5) using an ice cream container and changing water over 6-8 hours. Have you decided on the discus/angel thing? I have read alot saying not to, but then some say it is all rubbish.. I would pm the guru and ask him for advice as that is his thing, personally in a smaller tank I wouldn't risk it as I know the angels will be more aggressive and more into their food and that wont work out well for the discus.

I would probably do the salt too. Do it in a bath weak solution first, watch the fish leave it in there for half an hour or so or take it out immediately if it starts looking bad.. I think the theory is that the bugs are more affected by the salt than the fish and they should die. Increase the salt dose until it works, I think you will have the same issues with all meds you might use for treating this as you would with salt as the fish are scale less..

All fish that have been in the same tank or been in contact with any shared gear (nets hoses filters etc) are potential carriers and should be treated, remember to do the full 3 treatments. I think fish can generally last a while if they are eating and relatively happy but the longer it is infected the higher the risk of the worms doing more internal damage or secondary infections kicking in from the fish being run down. I haven't seen any worms but apparently they do fall out pretty much straight away after aviverm has been used so yours must have expired. There is no reason to cull the fry just treat them bearing in mind if they have been infected it may do more damage to them, stunt them etc but only time will tell.

Heres your pic nice fish If you copy and paste the address that already has the in it then you don't have to use the ones on here..

I found a few threads that I had read previously on the subject using the search feature viewtopic.php?f=10&t=7713&hilit=growing+brineshrimp viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3324&p=33688&hilit=growing+brineshrimp#p33688 There is probably more info out there if you searched for different words.

Have to agree they are awesome Mark very nice photos too! This is why I put the wee plug in to wait for your ones, there is no doubt they are red shoulders now you have to get them breeding. The sunshines are also very nice the ones I got off you are doing very well the male is awesome
-
Canister filters are awesome but it is probably an overkill for a 60L tank What are you trying to achieve by the filter being "better" do you want it to remove more crud from the tank or allow you to put more fish in the tank?

Adding limestone/crushed coral/marble chips etc etc will help keep your ph up I keep bristlenoses in all my african tanks, even with some of the bigger ones and they are fine, just acclimatise them carefully. How big is the tank? As for what fish to stick in it, you mentioned you had seen some tanks you liked just rattle off some of the fish you like and then we can all discus what you might like to go for..
-
People generally don't recommend keeping the 2 together due to angels carrying hex which your worming would take care of.. BUT I wouldn't want to be worming my fish that often both for cost of drugs and also the risk that if they do carry anything treating it that often may make it resistant to those drugs, and also the old "don't treat unless something is wrong" thing. Also having owned angels and not being a big fan, I would hate to see them smashing up discus as I found the quite aggressive.. You will find africans alot easier to setup, and maintain than discus, I find them the easiest fish I have kept to keep and breed very easy going no worries if you get busy and skip a water change or can't feed one day etc.. This is probably best in the cichlid section as every question you have asked is based on cichlids

Things are sorted with the guy I got the fish off Its the original breeder and others who are still breeding them with their heads stuck in the sand, but not much you can do about that.. lol Frenchy you are lucky to have a sidekick who owns a shop Were you talking about the first pic of the thread? I don't know if anyone else sees it but it looks a little off to me? I think it might be because of that reflection making the fish look slightly the wrong shape or if it is just me..

Fishless cycle in 8 footer ala naturale & Herbie system
ryanjury replied to kiwiplymouth's topic in Freshwater
Congrats on getting the tank up and running, I would love to have an 8f tank IMO There is almost no point in doing a fishless cycle on an 8ft tank just gradually stock it up anything that builds up will be diluted in so much water it wont harm the fish.. However now you have the meat and stuff in there working it wont hurt to wait as I am sure you are aware until the ammonia drops off before adding anything:) Any pics of tank? And what is going in it? -
lol yeah were all waiting for the photos but if they're like ones on the net they are an awesome fish thats for sure.. I don't think we have them in NZ.. lol I believe that Nav has them in NZ which is why this spawning and any in the future will be even more important to keep them here
-
lol unless you are buying something like an FX5 impeller they aren't cheap I know its hard around here but if you goto one of the smaller stores you may get it cheaper as they don't tend to put their standard huge mark up on things that they get in for a guaranteed sale..
-
As I said yesterday its awesome news mate good work Now I look forward to the photos that you WILL have to take. And maybe getting some of these guys in the future
-
Has anyone figured out an ingenious way of attaching the poly to the tank that wont leave residue like tape etc and wont leave huge air gaps meaning it doesn't insulate very well?
-
Cool, congrats on the breeding!
-
lol Cheers for that livingart it cracked me up, was actually on the phone to Nav and he mentioned it I thought you might have been having a wee dig.. lol Phoenix you summarised it very nicely, only Asti C. because someone said it was, nothing else about the random fish were like them, buyer beware I guess as they are still being sold around the place
-
lol of course there should be no confusion about that mark the first fish is an Astatotilapia calliptera..
