  1. Thanks for the tip Rob. I will remember that when I need some.
  2. Thanks for the wonderful read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Pity it wasnt weekly   Beats the other magazines for dead. I personally would love to be involved/participate in a fish show. This is probably only because I have never been involved before! I enjoy competition so that would be my driving force. Congrats Caryl (and others of course) for a great issue. Maybe I should get off my behind and do something to contribute - along with all you others out there too!

    Smelly Filter

Cheers for that information. If I can hold my breath long enough to go get it I will try that. Not sure I want to have it in the house but then again the smell of Janola has to be far better than the smell of the filter.

    Smelly Filter

Well found out today just what a filter smells like that hasnt been turned on for a while! :-? I thought hubby had cleaned it out and he thought I had. Turned out niether of us had and it has been sitting for over a month. Phew what a smell! I would like to use this filter again if there is anything on this earth that can remove the smell. I will throw out (of course) all the filter media but what is the best stuff to clean the filter baskets and cannister with? I have sat this filter right in the far corner of our backyard and I can still smell it from the back door!  Neighbours will wonder what has died at the fence.
  5. I have made a note of the new address. Sorry to hear things didnt work out.
  6. My hubby is busting to get a Zebra Pleco! If I could find I one I might get him one for Christmas but I dont fancy shipping one up from Christchurch (only place I have heard anyone say they have seen one). They are truely an awesome looking fish.
  7. My favs are the Hoplo's. I just love their curisoity and endless antics. They enjoy playing tag with a Synodontis twice their size (and winning!) These are also the fish I have had the longest. They are about 5 years old now.
  8.  Ira Unfortunately Andrew was here at the time hubby found them helping us setup our new computer so he got to see them in a fully sober state! Mind you I have spotted another one so we now have four! Woohooo ... After searching the tank high and low I am pretty sure there are no more. But now I know that they like the water conditions in the tank I can duplicate it. My luck it was a 100 year neon and that was her last 'litter'.  I have been trying to see if two of them are sticking closer together but it seems it was a one night stand as no-one is talking in the tank about the mummy or daddy. I may try putting two together and see what happens at a later date.
  9. They are only about 1/4 inch long I suppose. They fit nicely amongst the moss right into the depths of it so I guess for the time being they are safe in there.
  10. I can harldy believe it but we have found three (yes only three!) black neon babies in our 5 foot community tank. Hard to imagine how they have survived but they are there. hiding in the Java Moss. We are wrapped! I cant imagine how the catfish, angels, tetras etc havent cleaned up any eggs but I dont care ... we have baby black neons! If I tried to breed them I wouldnt succeed. Pity there wasnt ten hiding around so I could register it but I doubt there are any more than that. Both hubby and I have gone cross eyed looking for more. Water at an angle does funny things to the eyes after awhile. :-?
  11. Depends on how big they are? If only a few weeks old I would continue with the brine shrimp or maybe micro worm. I have found they need time to change from one food to another so need to faze one out while increasing the other. This is just my experience. As they are little piggies of fish I am sure that if they get hungry enough they will eat it but it would need to be very fine - almost dust depending on the size of them.
  12. Nico .. if you want any let me know. We ended up with 29 of them so I can always spare you some.
  13. Our mollies are doing fine. Havent lost any. As our ones were only little juveniles I am not expecting babies for a while yet. They are almost in 'our' water yet with one more change tonight it will just about be 100% changed. I do like the paler colour of them (almost pearly in some). Nice effect under lights. We are really pleased with them and would like to go and get some more!
  14. I too would not have any of these ever again! I have been told that if you keep a few then they tend to pick on each other rather than the other fishes but I am not prepared to take the risk again! They are just bullies!!
  15. Hubby has just found a new game to exercise fish. My poodle loves chasing the red laser light thingy around the floor and by accident he pointed it at the tank. All of a sudden all the tiny angels in the tank were chasing it around. He thinks it is a great game and I think they do to. These are the only ones in there that take any notice (about 6 of them play the game). I hope it doesnt hurt them in anyway!

    Plants

My hubby is very tolerant and even really enjoys the fish but I think putting fishy stuff in the dishwasher would be too much for him.

    Plants

I dont like them either but I must admit some of them do look like the real thing and last a lot longer too. I have used them in my breeding tank as easier to transfer eggs etc but prefer real ones. I have been thinking (only thinking) that I may use plastic fantastics in my Hoplo tank as I was sick and tired of having the floats floating. Tank looks bare without some kinds plant though!
  18. Hi and welcome to a great place. I myself had no trouble breeding Kribs. Ended up with over 300 of the little beggars! Proved to be a little difficult to get rid of. Just give them an upturned terracotta pot with a small chip taken out for access (smooth the rough edges) and they do the rest. I only put a little bit of moss in the bottom as it was easier to clean without sucking any babies up the syphon tube. I also had success breeding them by giving them a log that gave them access to the underside of it. they seem to like being hidden away. They keep the babies hidden for quite some time (about two weeks for my ones) before you see them out and about. They are very protective of their babies and if you have anything else in the tank it will be kept well away from then toddlers. They can get very vicious so beware for any of the other tank mates. the colours they show when in full breeding condition are just beautiful and the care they take of their babies leaves some of us humans in the dust! Good luck and keep us informed.
  19. Hi Dave Yes the little gold molly is still alive. Very pretty colour. Hopefully it will survive and grow to be a nice individual. I will let you know how it goes. It was a most enjoyable weekend and a BIG thankyou to Dave for all his hard work at organising it. Hopefully we will get to do it again before they sell the land and drain the swamp!
  20. Thanks for the explanation Rob. Very clear and even this thicko got it.

    Hello all

Hello to my best friend. 'Bout time you showed your face. I would rather not be known as Tom & Jerry thanks all the same. They are boys!!! Yes ... mouse does have some nice Discus. Now we need to work on getting a bigger tank! one three footer is just not enough. You need lots more tanks than that. Ask anyone ... the disease is terrible once you have it. Just ask my hubby. He never knew what a fish was until he meet me and now look at him. He races home everyday just to feed his babies (angels of course). Wifey has to wait until he has seen to his babies first!! Whats more we have another couple of hundred on the way! Laid today.
  22. Do you get more points for a re-breed or for a first time spawning?
  23. What a fun weekend! You must all try it some time. Not that I actually went in after them as that it what husbands are for   Lots of mud and thousands of fish!!! Now that we are no longer molly hunting newbies we will know what to bring next time. Will help to have a slightly larger net as these fish are little V8 powered machines. Very quick. Lots of laughs as Dave literally threw himself into the hunt. The only one that was filthy up to his neck. When you consider the water is only a few inches deep that is quite an achievement.   (The mud is about two feet thick under the water though). The catfish in the lake are huge so we had no intention of getting one as we would never have anywhere to put it! Not sure if anyone got one as we had to make tracks for home. The weather was glorious for us and I even managed to get sunburnt in Turangi. 8) We really enjoyed it and will look forward to the next time. We, I mean hubby, managed to catch about 30 little V8's which are settling in at home.
  24. I forgot to tell you that they DO move the eggs around! Sorry. Then they swim around, whistling away, looking the other way as if they dont know anything about any eggs. They can put them in the stupidist places like the top of uplift tubes or actually on the filter sponge! Hopefully they have just moved them and not eaten any as I havent known them to eat them ever.
